    A survey measuring perceptions of tenth grade English students at Thomas Jefferson High School toward the use of computers in writing for applied oral communications

    The purpose of the study was to measure the perceptions of tenth grade English students at Thomas Jefferson High School who use computers in writing for applied oral communications. Does the use of technology provide measurable results on tenth grade English students who use computers in writing for oral communications? The study used approximately 100 (four sections, computer-assigned) tenth grade Language arts, untracked students which were scheduled for a one semester class (18 weeks). Students were assigned to one teacher. The four sections were taught applied oral communications using computer assisted instruction and computers to produce the final written documents. Measurement and documentation were taken from all groups in the form of a pre test survey which described students’ perceptions at the beginning of an eight week period towards computer applications in the areas of essay composting, research, speech writing, and editing for a final draft. A post test survey was given to measure the changes in students’ perceptions after eight weeks of computer assisted instruction in the areas of essay composing, research, speech writing and editing for a final draft document. Teacher observations through journaling (by the teacher) generated documentation which cultivated underlying useful data. The hypothesis investigated was; technology does affect students’ perceptions which can extend learning experiences and opportunities. The change in perceptions provided conditions which enabled students to formulate and construct their own understanding from observable facts to clear concise conclusions which could be interactively (computer generated) communication through the written composition and speech

    This paper describes the development and evaluation of Synote, a freely available web based application that makes multimedia web resources (e.g. podcasts) easier to access, search, manage, and exploit for all learners, teachers and other users through the creation of notes, bookmarks, tags, links, images and text captions synchronized to any part of the recording. Synote uniquely enables users to easily find, or associate their notes or resources with any part of a podcast or video recording available on the web and the students surveyed would like to be able to access all their lectures through Synot

    One of the central questions in free speech jurisprudence is what activities the First Amendment encompasses. This Article considers that question in the context of an area of increasing importance – algorithm-based decisions. I begin by looking to broadly accepted legal sources, which for the First Amendment means primarily Supreme Court jurisprudence. That jurisprudence provides for very broad First Amendment coverage, and the Court has reinforced that breadth in recent cases. Under the Court’s jurisprudence the First Amendment (and the heightened scrutiny it entails) would apply to many algorithm-based decisions, specifically those entailing substantive communications. We could of course adopt a limiting conception of the First Amendment, but any nonarbitrary exclusion of algorithm-based decisions would require major changes in the Court’s jurisprudence. I believe that First Amendment coverage of algorithm-based decisions is too small a step to justify such changes. But insofar as we are concerned about the expansiveness of First Amendment coverage, we may want to limit it in two areas of genuine uncertainty: editorial decisions that are neither obvious nor communicated to the reader, and laws that single out speakers but do not regulate their speech. Even with those limitations, however, an enormous and growing amount of activity will be subject to heightened scrutiny absent a fundamental reorientation of First Amendment jurisprudence

    Transmitting, Editing, and Communicating: Determining What “The Freedom of Speech” Encompasses

    How much can one say with confidence about what constitutes the freedom of speech that Congress shall not abridge? In this Article, I address that question in the context of the transmission of speech specifically, the regulation of Internet access known as net neutrality. This question has implications both for the future of economic regulation, as more and more activity involves the transmission of bits, and for First Amendment interpretation. As for the latter, the question is what a lawyer or judge can conclude without having to choose among competing conceptions of speech. How far can a basic legal toolkit go? Using that toolkit, I find that bare transmission is not speech under the First Amendment, and that most forms of manipulation of bits also would not qualify as speech. Adopting any of the leading conceptions of the First Amendment would narrow the range of activities covered by the First Amendment. But even without choosing among those conceptions we can reach some meaningful conclusions about the limited application of the First Amendment to Internet access providers

    A Framework for collaborative writing with recording and post-meeting retrieval capabilities

    From a HCI perspective, elucidating and supporting the context in which collaboration takes place is key to implementing successful collaborative systems. Synchronous collaborative writing usually takes place in contexts involving a “meeting” of some sort. Collaborative writing meetings can be face-to-face or, increasingly, remote Internet-based meetings. The latter presents software developers with the possibility of incorporating multimedia recording and information retrieval capabilities into the collaborative environment. The collaborative writing that ensues can be seen as an activity encompassing asynchronous as well as synchronous aspects. In order for revisions, information retrieval and other forms of post-meeting, asynchronous work to be effectively supported, the synchronous collaborative editor must be able to appropriately detect and record meeting metadata. This paper presents a collaborative editor that supports recording of user actions and explicit metadata production. Design and technical implications of introducing such capabilities are discussed with respect to document segmentation, consistency control, and awareness mechanisms

    The potential use of Automatic Speech Recognition to assist receptive communication is explored. The opportunities and challenges that this technology presents students and staff to provide captioning of speech online or in classrooms for deaf or hard of hearing students and assist blind, visually impaired or dyslexic learners to read and search learning material more readily by augmenting synthetic speech with natural recorded real speech is also discussed and evaluated. The automatic provision of online lecture notes, synchronised with speech, enables staff and students to focus on learning and teaching issues, while also benefiting learners unable to attend the lecture or who find it difficult or impossible to take notes at the same time as listening, watching and thinking
