Modes of representation in contemporary Galician visual poetry

    Get PDF
Visual poetry in Galicia had a plural and discontinuous existence in the twentieth century'! Its development in Galicia follows national (Spanish) and international artistic practices, while also engaging in the configuration of a local, national, and transnational Galician identity. The practice of different styles of visual poetry shows a rich line of creativity, especially in the last four decades. Their approaches coincide with sociocultural and economic changes in Spain, such as the end of the dictatorship in 1975, the consequent normalization of the Galician language, and more recently the progressive influence of globalization. This essay considers how current Galician visual poets reconceptualize these issues in the context of an international cultural and visual aesthetics

Multimedia and the creation of the scenographic space in the stage realization of Emmanuel Emmasealu’s nerves

    Get PDF
The major objective of the scenographic team is to create an  illusion of reality, a perception of life as seen from a perspective. In doing this, the textual director (Artistic Director) usually relies on the skills and knowledge of the artistic or audio-pictorial director (Technical Director) to coordinate all the virtual and acoustic aspects of the production into a unified point of view for the audience, to reinforce the directorial approach and spine of the production. The skills and knowledge required by the artistic director in designing and coordinating the audio-pictorial  composition goes a long way in determining the artistic success of the production. This paper attempts an artistic exploration of theproduction of Emmanuel Emasealu’s Nerves as designed and directed by Idiata Frank, a third-year student of the Department of Theatre Arts, Niger Delta University in an experimental  multimedia production in which multi-media effects were well welded with two and three dimensional scenic pieces to affect a stunning presentation of the select text despite the paucity of technical facilities at the NDU theatre. The aim is to highlight the need for innovative approaches to textual and artistic directing in contemporary theatre productions. It is the opinion of the author that the theatre stands to gain from iconoclastic and new  approaches to textual an d artistic directing by upcoming studentsdirectors and designers

Normative Legitimation of Digital Longforms in Journalism: Three Arguments for Complex Digital Storytelling

    Get PDF
Digital longforms are extensive, technologically advanced multimedia stories which inform users about a complex topic and thereby integrate different perspectives. While media outlets benefit from the prestige-enhancing potentials of these stories, their production bundles timely, monetary and human resources above average. In light of a normative legitimation, this paper critically explores three arguments for the production of these complex digital longforms. It argues that for digital journalism (I), longforms can be seen as a means for demarcation and for fulfilling its democratic role; for the producing journalists (II), longform production bears the chance to establish new production routines and collaborations; and for the audience (III), digital longforms provide the potential for users to immerse into a topic and to gain profound knowledge about it. Potential counter arguments or related concerns will be addressed

Translation, materiality, intersemioticity: Excursions in experimental literature

    Get PDF
This paper presents case examples of experimental literature that tap into the potentials of multimodality in the creation of an embodied aesthetic experience. In each case, translation performs the contingency of meaning by traversing the interliminal space between discursive sites: two versions of the same language, two semiotic planes. By reading the multimodal aspects of these texts, the paper traces the function of translation in foregrounding the materiality of the linguistic sign. It argues that in enacting an embodied literature, translation is not primarily about the transference of meaning from one text-site to another; it becomes an intervening site in its own right, where signs, readers and media intercourse to create a sensuous fabric that adduces “the pleasure of the text.” The paper also discusses the nature of aesthetics created by translation-mediated multimodal literature, and argues for critical attention to the role of translation in advancing the corporeality of literature.published_or_final_versio

The Power of Recipes: Culinary Practice as a Strategy to Deconstruct Arab-American Identity in Diana Abu-Jaber’s Crescent

Crescent (2003) is an example of the kind of Arab-American literature that has emerged noticeably in the early years of the 21st century. It signifies a hypothesis that culinary practice is an essential cultural component for diasporic figures to define their identities, especially in a multi-cultural society. These figures embrace such component to strategically define themselves and assert their belonging and affiliation to their original homelands. This paper, as such, examines the extent to which Arab-American characters in the novel, namely Sirine and Han, consider culinary practice as a key tool to understanding their identity, locate themselves in a multi-cultural society, and re-discover their true belonging. The study of this novel shows that culinary practices, as indicated in the narratives, deconstruct Arab-American identity through various dimensions, including memory, nostalgia, hybridity, and essentialism. In addition to employing critical and analytical approaches to the novel, this paper relies on a socio-cultural conceptual framework based on perspectives of prominent critics and theorists such as Homi Bhabha, Brinda Mehta, Dallen Timothy, and Stuart Hall, to name a few
