The importance of understanding computer analyses in civil engineering
Sophisticated computer modelling systems are widely used in civil engineering analysis. This paper takes examples from structural engineering, environmental engineering, flood management and geotechnical engineering to illustrate the need for civil engineers to be competent in the use of computer tools. An understanding of a model's scientific basis, appropriateness, numerical limitations, validation, verification and propagation of uncertainty is required before applying its results. A review of education and training is also suggested to ensure engineers are competent at using computer modelling systems, particularly in the context of risk management. 1. Introductio
An Analysis of Publication Venues for Automatic Differentiation Research
We present the results of our analysis of publication venues for papers on
automatic differentiation (AD), covering academic journals and conference
proceedings. Our data are collected from the AD publications database
maintained by the autodiff.org community website. The database is purpose-built
for the AD field and is expanding via submissions by AD researchers. Therefore,
it provides a relatively noise-free list of publications relating to the field.
However, it does include noise in the form of variant spellings of journal and
conference names. We handle this by manually correcting and merging these
variants under the official names of corresponding venues. We also share the
raw data we get after these corrections.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Some techniques for the analysis of remote sensing images with particular relevance to their exploitation in non scientific domains
International audienceRemote sening is now a masterpiece in the scientific understanding of the entire Earth system on a global scale which is the goal of the Earth system science for next decades. Remote sensing is also a masterpiece in environmental management since it provides a wealth of information unattainable by traditional means. Some techniques for the analysis of satellite images and their use in scientific domains are presented briefly. Some examples are given, covering meteorology, oceanology, forestry and vegetation studies. This communication focuses itself on the exploitation of such images and techniques in non-scientific domains. The benefit of such data in environmental planning is depicted and is illustrated by a numerical forecasting of regional urban growth. The potential of the use of satellite images by engineering companies is discussed in the light of recent advances in methods and computers. Particular attention is paid to the solar engineering field
Finite element analysis of non-isothermal multiphase porous media in dynamics
This work presents a mathematical and a numerical model for the analysis of the
thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behavior of multiphase deformable porous materials
in dynamics. The fully coupled governing equations are developed within the
Hybrid Mixture Theory. To analyze the THM behavior of soil structures in the low
frequency domain, e.g. under earthquake excitation, the u-p-T formulation is advocated
by neglecting the relative acceleration of the fluids and their convective terms.
The standard Bubnov-Galerkin method is applied to the governing equations for the
spatial discretization, whereas the generalized Newmark scheme is used for the time
discretization. The final non-linear and coupled system of algebraic equations is
solved by the Newton method within the monolithic approach. The formulation and
the implemented solution procedure are validated through the comparison with
other finite element solutions or analytical solutions

Recent advances in karst research: from theory to fieldwork and applications
Karst landscapes and karst aquifers, which are composed of a variety of soluble rocks such as salt, gypsum, anhydrite, limestone, dolomite and quartzite, are fascinating areas of study. As karst rocks are abundant on the Earth's surface, the fast evolution of karst landscapes and the rapid flow of water through karst aquifers present challenges from a number of different perspectives. This collection of 25 papers deals with different aspects of these challenges, including karst geology, geomorphology and speleogenesis, karst hydrogeology, karst modelling, and karst hazards and management. Together these papers provide a state-of-the-art review of the current challenges and solutions in describing karst from a scientific perspective
