    Design and Modeling of 9 Degrees of Freedom Redundant Robotic Manipulator

    In disaster areas, robot manipulators are used to rescue and clearance of sites. Because of the damaged area, they encounter disturbances like obstacles, and limited workspace to explore the area and to achieve the location of the victims. Increasing the degrees of freedom is required to boost the adaptability of manipulators to avoid disturbances, and to obtain the fast desired position and precise movements of the end-effector. These robot manipulators offer a reliable way to handle the barrier challenges since they can search in places that humans can't reach. In this research paper, the 9-DOF robotic manipulator is designed, and an analytical model is developed to examine the system’s behavior in different scenarios. The kinematic and dynamic representation of the proposed model is analyzed to obtain the translation or rotation, and joint torques to achieve the expected position, velocity, and acceleration respectively. The number of degrees may be raised to avoid disturbances, and to obtain the fast desired position and precise movements of the end-effector. The simulation of developed models is performed to ensure the adaptable movement of the manipulators working in distinct configurations and controlling their motion thoroughly and effectively. In the proposed configuration the joints can easily be moved to achieve the desired position of the end-effector and the results are satisfactory. The simulation results show that the redundant manipulator achieves the victim location with various configurations of the manipulator. Results reveal the effectiveness and efficacy of the proposed system

    Fault tolerance force for redundant manipulators

    Fault tolerant manipulators maintain their trajectory even if their joint/s fails. Assuming that the manipulator is fault tolerant on its trajectory, fault tolerant compliance manipulators provide required force at their end-effector even when a joint fails. To achieve this, the contributions of the faulty joints for the force of the end-effector are required to be mapped into the proper compensating joint torques of the healthy joints to maintain the force. This paper addresses the optimal mapping to minimize the force jump due to a fault, which is the maximum effort to maintain the force when a fault occurs. The paper studies the locked joint fault/s of the redundant manipulators and it relates the force jump at the end-effector to the faults within the joints. Adding on a previous study to maintain the trajectory, in here the objective is to providing fault tolerant force at the end-effector of the redundant manipulators. This optimal mapping with minimum force jump is presented using matrix perturbation model. And the force jump is calculated through this model for single and multiple joints fault. The proposed optimal mapping is used in different fault scenarios for a 5-DOF manipulator; also it is deployed to compensate the force at the end-effector for the 5-DOF manipulator through simulation study and the results are presented

    On adaptive robot systems for manufacturing applications

    System adaptability is very important to current manufacturing practices due to frequent changes in the customer needs. Two basic concepts that can be employed to achieve system adaptability are flexible systems and modular systems. Flexible systems are fixed integral systems with some adjustable components. Adjustable components have limited ranges of parameter changes that can be made, thus restricting the adaptability of systems. Modular systems are composed of a set of pre-existing modules. Usually, the parameters of modules in modular systems are fixed, and thus increased system adaptability is realized only by increasing the number of modules. Increasing the number of modules could result in higher costs, poor positioning accuracy, and low system stiffness in the context of manufacturing applications. In this thesis, a new idea was formulated: a combination of the flexible system and modular system concepts. Systems developed based on this new idea are called adaptive systems. This thesis is focused on adaptive robot systems. An adaptive robot system is such that adaptive components or adjustable parameters are introduced upon the modular architecture of a robot system. This implies that there are two levels to achieve system adaptability: the level where a set of modules is appropriately assembled and the level where adjustable components or parameters are specified. Four main contributions were developed in this thesis study. First, a General Architecture of Modular Robots (GAMR) was developed. The starting point was to define the architecture of adaptive robot systems to have as many configuration variations as possible. A novel application of the Axiomatic Design Theory (ADT) was applied to GAMR development. It was found that GAMR was the one with the most coverage, and with a judicious definition of adjustable parameters. Second, a system called Automatic Kinematic and Dynamic Analysis (AKDA) was developed. This system was a foundation for synthesis of adaptive robot configurations. In comparison with the existing approach, the proposed approach has achieved systemization, generality, flexibility, and completeness. Third, this thesis research has developed a finding that in modular system design, simultaneous consideration of both kinematic and dynamic behaviors is a necessary step, owing to a strong coupling between design variables and system behaviors. Based on this finding, a method for simultaneous consideration of type synthesis, number synthesis, and dimension synthesis was developed. Fourth, an adaptive modular Parallel Kinematic Machine (PKM) was developed to demonstrate the benefits of adaptive robot systems in parallel kinematic machines, which have found many applications in machine tool industries. In this architecture, actuators and limbs were modularized, while the platforms were adjustable in such a way that both the joint positions and orientations on the platforms can be changed

    In recent years, parallel kinematics mechanisms have attracted a lot of attention from the academic and industrial communities due to potential applications not only as robot manipulators but also as machine tools. Generally, the criteria used to compare the performance of traditional serial robots and parallel robots are the workspace, the ratio between the payload and the robot mass, accuracy, and dynamic behaviour. In addition to the reduced coupling effect between joints, parallel robots bring the benefits of much higher payload-robot mass ratios, superior accuracy and greater stiffness; qualities which lead to better dynamic performance. The main drawback with parallel robots is the relatively small workspace. A great deal of research on parallel robots has been carried out worldwide, and a large number of parallel mechanism systems have been built for various applications, such as remote handling, machine tools, medical robots, simulators, micro-robots, and humanoid robots.     Automatic grinding using robot manipulators, requires simultaneous control of the robot endpoint and force interaction between the robot and the constraint surface. In robotic grinding, surface quality can be increased by accurate estimation of grinding forces where significant tool and workpiece deflection occurs. Tool deflection during robotic grinding operation causes geometrical errors in the workpiece cross-section. Also, it makes controlling the grinding cutting depth difficult. Moreover small diameter of the tool in robotic grinding causes different behavior in the grinding process in comparison with the tools that are used by universal grinding machines. In this study, a robotic surface grinding force model is developed in order to predict the normal and tangential grinding forces. A physical model is used based on chip formation energy and sliding energy. To improve the model for robotic grinding operations, a refining term is added. In order to include the stiffness of the tool and setup in the force model, penetration tests are implemented and their results are used in refining term of the force model. The model coefficients are estimated using a linear regression technique. The proposed model is validated by comparing model outputs with experimentally obtained data. Evaluation of the test results demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model in predicting surface grinding forces. In this thesis, a method is proposed for calculation of the tool deflection in normal and tangential directions based on grinding force feedback in these directions. Based on calculated values, a real-time tool deflection compensation algorithm is developed and implemented. Implementing surface grinding with constant normal force is a well-known approach for improving surface quality. Tool deflection in the robotic grinding causes orientation between the force sensor reference frame and tool reference frame. This means that the measured normal and tangential forces by the sensor are not actual normal and tangential interaction forces between the tool and workpiece. In order to eliminate this problem, a resultant grinding force control strategy is designed and implemented for a parallel hexapod-robotic light abrasive surface grinding operation. Due to the nonlinear nature of the grinding operation, a supervised fuzzy controller is designed where the reference input is identified by the proposed grinding force model. Evaluation of the experimental results demonstrates significant improvement in grinding operation accuracy using the proposed resultant force control strategy in parallel with a real-time tool deflection compensation algorithm. The final aim of this thesis is to develop a posture optimization strategy for robotic grinding operation using 12 DOF hybrid redundant manipulator. The 12 DOF redundant hybrid manipulator of present study is composed of a 6 DOF serial ABB IRB2000 robot and a 6 DOF PI H-824 hexapod where the parallel hexapod is connected to the end of the serial ABB manipulator. Here the fifth joint (wrist) of the ABB serial manipulator is the weakest joint in the robot, so the computed torque of this joint is selected as the cost function. The aim is to minimize this factor by finding the best configuration of the hybrid manipulator using genetic algorithm approach. For such a purpose, a complete kinematic and dynamic model of the 12 DOF manipulator is developed where the output of the grinding force model is fed into the dynamic model as external reaction forces. The computed torque of the wrist joint is given to the optimization module and new configuration is generated by the module and is given to the dynamic model. This process continues until converge to the minimum computed torque value. Then the optimal configuration is chosen for the grinding operation.     This volume collects papers published in two Special Issues “Kinematics and Robot Design II, KaRD2019” (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/KRD2019) and “Kinematics and Robot Design III, KaRD2020” (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/KaRD2020), which are the second and third issues of the KaRD Special Issue series hosted by the open access journal robotics.The KaRD series is an open environment where researchers present their works and discuss all topics focused on the many aspects that involve kinematics in the design of robotic/automatic systems. It aims at being an established reference for researchers in the field as other serial international conferences/publications are. Even though the KaRD series publishes one Special Issue per year, all the received papers are peer-reviewed as soon as they are submitted and, if accepted, they are immediately published in MDPI Robotics. Kinematics is so intimately related to the design of robotic/automatic systems that the admitted topics of the KaRD series practically cover all the subjects normally present in well-established international conferences on “mechanisms and robotics”.KaRD2019 together with KaRD2020 received 22 papers and, after the peer-review process, accepted only 17 papers. The accepted papers cover problems related to theoretical/computational kinematics, to biomedical engineering and to other design/applicative aspects
