    Computers that smile: Humor in the interface

    It is certainly not the case that wen we consider research on the role of human characteristics in the user interface of computers that no attention has been paid to the role of humor. However, when we compare efforts in this area with efforts and experiments that attempt to demonstrate the positive role of general emotion modelling in the user interface, then we must conclude that this attention is still low. As we all know, sometimes the computer is a source of frustration rather than a source of enjoyment. And indeed we see research projects that aim at recognizing a user’s frustration, rather than his enjoyment. However, rather than detecting frustration, and maybe reacting on it in a humorous way, we would like to prevent frustration by making interaction with a computer more natural and more enjoyable. For that reason we are working on multimodal interaction and embodied conversational agents. In the interaction with embodied conversational agents verbal and nonverbal communication are equally important. Multimodal emotion display and detection are among our advanced research issues, and investigations in the role of humor in human-computer interaction is one of them

    Towards an engineering approach for advanced interaction techniques in 3D environments

    National audienceIn recent years, Virtual Environments have appeared in new areas such as mass-market, web or mobile situations. In parallel, advanced forms ofinteractions are emerging such as tactile, mixed, tangible or spatial user interfaces, promoting ease of learning and use. To contribute to the democratization of 3D Virtual Environments(3DVE) and their use by persons who are not experts in 3D and occasional users, simultaneously considering Computer Graphics and Human Computer Interaction design considerations is required. In this position paper, we first provide an overview of a new analytical framework for the design of advanced interaction techniques for 3D Virtual Environment. It consists in identifying links that support the interaction and connect user’s tasks to be performed in a 3DVE with the targeted scene graph.     Going Deeper into Action Recognition: A Survey

    Understanding human actions in visual data is tied to advances in complementary research areas including object recognition, human dynamics, domain adaptation and semantic segmentation. Over the last decade, human action analysis evolved from earlier schemes that are often limited to controlled environments to nowadays advanced solutions that can learn from millions of videos and apply to almost all daily activities. Given the broad range of applications from video surveillance to human-computer interaction, scientific milestones in action recognition are achieved more rapidly, eventually leading to the demise of what used to be good in a short time. This motivated us to provide a comprehensive review of the notable steps taken towards recognizing human actions. To this end, we start our discussion with the pioneering methods that use handcrafted representations, and then, navigate into the realm of deep learning based approaches. We aim to remain objective throughout this survey, touching upon encouraging improvements as well as inevitable fallbacks, in the hope of raising fresh questions and motivating new research directions for the reader

    Developing advanced interface design guidelines from survey based and empirical research

    The Guideline project is concerned with the interface and interaction issues of consumer product control and display devices. The main objective of the project is to produce interface design guidelines for emerging or advanced consumer based products for interaction and product designers. The information for the guidelines is being produced using two different approaches; these are empirically based guidelines produced within the project, using software based prototypes of three anticipated advanced interfaces, and information gathered from relevant human computer interaction (HCI) literature. This paper presents an account of the project as a case study and documents some of the findings that have emerged so far

    Techniques of EMG signal analysis: detection, processing, classification and applications

    Electromyography (EMG) signals can be used for clinical/biomedical applications, Evolvable Hardware Chip (EHW) development, and modern human computer interaction. EMG signals acquired from muscles require advanced methods for detection, decomposition, processing, and classification. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the various methodologies and algorithms for EMG signal analysis to provide efficient and effective ways of understanding the signal and its nature. We further point up some of the hardware implementations using EMG focusing on applications related to prosthetic hand control, grasp recognition, and human computer interaction. A comparison study is also given to show performance of various EMG signal analysis methods. This paper provides researchers a good understanding of EMG signal and its analysis procedures. This knowledge will help them develop more powerful, flexible, and efficient applications

    Implementation and Performance Analysis of Different Hand Gesture Recognition Methods

    In recent few years, hand gesture recognition is one of the advanced grooming technologies in the era of human-computer interaction and computer vision due to a wide area of application in the real world. But it is a very complicated task to recognize hand gesture easily due to gesture orientation, light condition, complex background, translation and scaling of gesture images. To remove this limitation, several research works have developed which is successfully decrease this complexity. However, the intention of this paper is proposed and compared four different hand gesture recognition system and apply some optimization technique on it which ridiculously increased the existing model accuracy and model running time. After employed the optimization tricks, the adjusted gesture recognition model accuracy was 93.21% and the run time was 224 seconds which was 2.14% and 248 seconds faster than an existing similar hand gesture recognition model. The overall achievement of this paper could be applied for smart home control, camera control, robot control, medical system, natural talk, and many other fields in computer vision and human-computer interaction
