Workshop in Geneva 10/10/2007
This highly successful workshop was organised in cooperation with the European Commission. The event brought together
the technical, administrative and financial representatives of the various national initiatives, which have been established
recently in some European countries to support research and technical development in the area of audio-visual content
processing, indexing and searching for the next generation Internet using semantic technologies, and which may lead to an
internet-based knowledge infrastructure. The objective of this workshop was to provide a platform for mutual information
and exchange between these initiatives, the European Commission and the participants. Top speakers were present from
each of the national initiatives. There was time for discussions with the audience and amongst the European National
Initiatives. The challenges, communalities, difficulties, targeted/expected impact, success criteria, etc. were tackled. This
workshop addressed how these national initiatives could work together and benefit from each other.
Workshop in Munich 11/21-22/2007
Numerous EU and national research projects are working on the automatic or semi-automatic generation of descriptive and
functional metadata derived from analysing audio-visual content. The owners of AV archives and production facilities are
eagerly awaiting such methods which would help them to better exploit their assets.Hand in hand with the digitization of
analogue archives and the archiving of digital AV material, metadatashould be generated on an as high semantic level as
possible, preferably fully automatically. All users of metadata rely on a certain metadata model. All AV/multimedia search
engines, developed or under current development, would have to respect some compatibility or compliance with the
metadata models in use. The purpose of this workshop is to draw attention to the specific problem of metadata models in the
context of (semi)-automatic multimedia search
An information-driven framework for image mining
[Abstract]: Image mining systems that can automatically extract semantically meaningful information (knowledge) from image data are increasingly in demand. The fundamental challenge in image mining is to determine how low-level, pixel representation contained in a raw image or
image sequence can be processed to identify high-level spatial objects and relationships. To meet
this challenge, we propose an efficient information-driven framework for image mining. We distinguish four levels of information: the Pixel Level, the Object Level, the Semantic Concept Level, and the Pattern and Knowledge Level. High-dimensional indexing schemes and retrieval
techniques are also included in the framework to support the flow of information among the levels. We believe this framework represents the first step towards capturing the different levels of information present in image data and addressing the issues and challenges of discovering useful
patterns/knowledge from each level
CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines
Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective.
The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines.
From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
Image mining: trends and developments
[Abstract]: Advances in image acquisition and storage technology have led to tremendous growth in very large and detailed image databases. These images, if analyzed, can reveal useful information to the human users. Image mining deals with the extraction of implicit knowledge, image data relationship, or other patterns not explicitly stored in the images. Image mining is more than just an extension of data mining to image domain. It is an interdisciplinary endeavor that draws upon expertise in computer vision, image processing, image retrieval, data mining, machine learning, database, and artificial intelligence. In this paper, we will examine the research issues in image mining, current developments in image mining, particularly, image mining frameworks, state-of-the-art techniques and systems. We will also identify some future research directions for image mining
An MPEG-7 scheme for semantic content modelling and filtering of digital video
Abstract Part 5 of the MPEG-7 standard specifies Multimedia Description Schemes (MDS); that is, the format multimedia content models should conform to in order to ensure interoperability across multiple platforms and applications. However, the standard does not specify how the content or the associated model may be filtered. This paper proposes an MPEG-7 scheme which can be deployed for digital video content modelling and filtering. The proposed scheme, COSMOS-7, produces rich and multi-faceted semantic content models and supports a content-based filtering approach that only analyses content relating directly to the preferred content requirements of the user. The third and last CHORUS conference on Multimedia Search Engines took place from the 26th to the 27th of May 2009 in Brussels, Belgium. About 100 participants from 15 European countries, the US, Japan and Australia learned about the latest developments in the domain. User-interface to a CCTV video search system
The proliferation of CCTV surveillance systems creates a problem of how to effectively navigate and search the resulting video archive, in a variety of security scenarios. We are concerned here with a situation where a searcher must locate all occurrences of a given person or object within a specified timeframe and with constraints on which camera(s) footage is valid to search. Conventional approaches based on browsing time/camera based combinations are inadequate. We advocate using automatically detected video objects as a basis for search, linking and browsing. In this paper we present a system under development based on users interacting with detected video objects. We outline the suite of technologies needed to achieve such a system and for each we describe where we are in terms of realizing those technologies. We also present a system interface to this system, designed with user needs and user tasks in mind
Integrating memory context into personal information re-finding
Personal information archives are emerging as a new challenge for information retrieval (IR) techniques.
The user’s memory plays a greater role in retrieval from person archives than from other more traditional types of information collection (e.g. the Web), due to the large overlap of its content and individual human memory of the captured material. This paper presents a new analysis on IR of personal archives from a cognitive perspective. Some existing work on personal information management (PIM) has begun to employ human memory features into their IR systems. In our work we seek to go further, we assume that for IR in PIM system terms can be weighted not only by traditional IR methods, but also taking the user’s recall reliability into account. We aim to develop algorithms that
combine factors from both the system side and the user side to achieve more effective searching. In this paper, we discuss possible applications of human memory theories for this algorithm, and present results from a pilot study and a proposed model of data structure for the HDMs achieves
