    Get PDF
Public Universities in Malaysia are having many programs offered to their students and using e-learning or VLE as their platform, which mostly enrolled by distant learning students. However, no research report found on the current state of VLE practices whether they should be maintained or improvised. Assessment on process capability should be done to ensure quality operation of VLE. This study aims to assess the process being carried by the higher education provider to identify which process of VLE practice require critical improvement. Using e-Learning Maturity Model (eMM), a group of active lecturer/instructor in e-learning was selected to assess current practices of VLE. The study identifies major processes which require critical improvement based on specific dimensions to enhance VLE operations in higher education institutions. Majority of VLE processes were found to be inadequately practiced. Infrastructure of the VLE platform require serious makeover while teaching and learning support towards students and teacher demands attention. Continuous improvement effort is neglected. Involvement of administrators, librarians, and students as the assessor of the VLE practice to accommodate more specific results are recommended for future study

ICT tools patterns of use among Malaysian ESL undergraduates

The proposal to undertake major reforms in universities to cater to the need of the so-called “digital natives” has revealed the belief that there is a homogenous generation of university students highly skilled in the usage of technology is untrue. Instead these students seem more inclined to use technology for social rather than academic purposes. In Malaysia, the use of technology in learning English as Second Language (ESL) has generally been well received. However the characteristics of the “digital natives” have not been clearly defined until recently when Thang et al. (2014) undertook a study to investigate patterns of ICT use of students in a public university in Malaysia. Their findings are somewhat similar to those of other countries but they differ in that they found students show a preference for the teachercentred approach. The current study extends on this by undertaking a study involving four different types of public universities. A questionnaire designed by the research team was used to collect data which were analysed quantitatively using SPSS. The findings revealed that students from all four universities generally felt that technology is useful for learning ESL. However, their usage is more for recreation than for learning ESL. It further revealed that the teachers used technology only moderately, but the students still felt that their teachers are competent in the use of technology. This shows their unwillingness to criticize their teachers openly. However, there were some variations which suggest that students from older research universities are more self-reliant and students from newer universities are more receptive to the use of technology for learning ESL

Perspectives of Students’ Behavior Towards Mobile Learning (M-learning) in Egypt: an Extension of the UTAUT Model

    Get PDF
The rapid development of third-generation (3G) mobile technologies has led to the emergence of a new kind of learning called mobile learning (m-learning). M-learning means the use of mobile devices to access learning materials at anytime and anywhere with the aid of mobile terminals and networks. This paper explores the possibility of applying m-learning for schools in Egypt through a proposed model of acceptance factors that may affect the students’ intentions to adopt m-learning. We use the original model of Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and extended it with three new factors mobility, interactivity, and enjoyment

    Get PDF
Mobile learning (m-learning) is considered as the next form of e-learning using mobile technologies to facilitate education for teachers and learners anywhere and anytime. Engaging the m-learning services in the Malaysian higher education could improve the availability of education. Students’ awareness of such technology is a key for success acceptance. This research aims to study the acceptance and use of m-learning services among Malaysian higher education students. The main objective is to propose a students' acceptance model of m-learning in the higher education environment. The study investigates the students’ acceptance of behavior intention to use m-learning and its effect on usage behavior in the higher education environment. It provides the knowledge base about the current state of students’ awareness about m-learning services. The study found that both of the environment and the infrastructure are appropriate to diffuse and utilize m-learning in the higher education environment. Furthermore, the results showed that the students have adequate knowledge and awareness to use such technology in their education environment. The limitations of m-learning for education were well concerned by students. The students’ perspective is very important to investigate the use behavior of m-learning in the higher education environment. Findings of the study suggest that the behavior intention to use the m-learning by students in the higher education environment have positive influence on the use behavior. Consequently, the availability of facilitating conditions is an important to influence students’ use behavior. The study suggests several factors as important determinants of the behavior intention to use the m-learning in the higher education environment. Specifically, behavior intension to use appears to be adopted and facilitated by the usefulness of m-learning services, so more usefulness of m-learning leads to more acceptances among students in the higher educatio

With the overreaching acceptance of ICT in education and access to Internet occasioned by advancement in technology, this paper investigates pre-service teachers' use of Internet in a college of education. The study was a descriptive survey. Data was collected using a researcher designed instrument tagged “Student Internet Use Scale” (SIUS). The population comprised of all NCE pre-service teachers in Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education Owerri Nigeria. Findings show that mobile phones remains the most widely used mode of internet access with social networking, searching for information on school assignments, chatting forming the major reasons why they surf the net. Social networking is the major purpose for Internet use by female pre-service teachers while school related activities are of priority to males. The difference in purpose of internet use according to gender is however not statistically significant; similarly, there is no statically significant difference between male and female pre-service teachers in the frequency of Internet USAge. The result has far reaching implication for provision and use of Internet facilities to enhance teaching and learning in the College and colleges of education in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Since 2010, there has been a visible increase in the amount of research focused on mobile learning in higher education in Malaysia. To determine if this increase corresponds to an increase in the use of mobile devices to support student learning, data from two surveys conducted in 2008 and 2013 were compared to determine the changes in rates of ownership and use of mobile devices among students. In 2008, although all students owned feature phones very few had access to other mobile devices and rarely used them to support their learning. In 2013, the picture had changed significantly, with some 80 per cent of students owning smart phones and all had access to mobile devices of some sort. Additionally, students were using these devices to support their learning in a number of ways. The paper concludes with indications and implications for future research

An e-library provides highly efficient and consistent methods for search, retrieval of information, and intention to use by the users. Previous literatures and current scenario emphasis the role of interface characteristics of e-library, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use on intention to use of e-library. Therefore, drawing upon TAM model, this study aims to investigate the influence of interface characteristics of e-library namely terminology, screen design and navigation on the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use which lead to intention to use of elibrary. The sample consisted of 176 postgraduate students of Universiti Utara Malaysia. All data are analyzed using software of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The results indicated that both perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use had significant influence on intention to use UUM e-library. Further, this study empirically supported the influence of interface characteristics (e.g. terminology, screen design and navigation) on perceived usefulness. However, navigation was found to have insignificant influence on perceived ease of use of UUM e-library. Finally, the implications are discussed, and limitations of the study and future directions are briefly outlined
