    Minimal Infrastructure Radio Frequency Home Localisation Systems

    The ability to track the location of a subject in their home allows the provision of a number of location based services, such as remote activity monitoring, context sensitive prompts and detection of safety critical situations such as falls. Such pervasive monitoring functionality offers the potential for elders to live at home for longer periods of their lives with minimal human supervision. The focus of this thesis is on the investigation and development of a home roomlevel localisation technique which can be readily deployed in a realistic home environment with minimal hardware requirements. A conveniently deployed Bluetooth ® localisation platform is designed and experimentally validated throughout the thesis. The platform adopts the convenience of a mobile phone and the processing power of a remote location calculation computer. The use of Bluetooth ® also ensures the extensibility of the platform to other home health supervision scenarios such as wireless body sensor monitoring. Central contributions of this work include the comparison of probabilistic and nonprobabilistic classifiers for location prediction accuracy and the extension of probabilistic classifiers to a Hidden Markov Model Bayesian filtering framework. New location prediction performance metrics are developed and signicant performance improvements are demonstrated with the novel extension of Hidden Markov Models to higher-order Markov movement models. With the simple probabilistic classifiers, location is correctly predicted 80% of the time. This increases to 86% with the application of the Hidden Markov Models and 88% when high-order Hidden Markov Models are employed. Further novelty is exhibited in the derivation of a real-time Hidden Markov Model Viterbi decoding algorithm which presents all the advantages of the original algorithm, while producing location estimates in real-time. Significant contributions are also made to the field of human gait-recognition by applying Bayesian filtering to the task of motion detection from accelerometers which are already present in many mobile phones. Bayesian filtering is demonstrated to enable a 35% improvement in motion recognition rate and even enables a floor recognition rate of 68% using only accelerometers. The unique application of time-varying Hidden Markov Models demonstrates the effect of integrating these freely available motion predictions on long-term location predictions

    Machine Learning Classification of SDSS Transient Survey Images

    We show that multiple machine learning algorithms can match human performance in classifying transient imaging data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) supernova survey into real objects and artefacts. This is a first step in any transient science pipeline and is currently still done by humans, but future surveys such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will necessitate fully machine-enabled solutions. Using features trained from eigenimage analysis (principal component analysis, PCA) of single-epoch g, r and i-difference images, we can reach a completeness (recall) of 96 per cent, while only incorrectly classifying at most 18 per cent of artefacts as real objects, corresponding to a precision (purity) of 84 per cent. In general, random forests performed best, followed by the k-nearest neighbour and the SkyNet artificial neural net algorithms, compared to other methods such as na\"ive Bayes and kernel support vector machine. Our results show that PCA-based machine learning can match human success levels and can naturally be extended by including multiple epochs of data, transient colours and host galaxy information which should allow for significant further improvements, especially at low signal-to-noise.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures.     A Multi-Contextual Approach to Modeling the Impact of Critical Highway Work Zones in Large Urban Corridors

    Accurate Construction Work Zone (CWZ) impact assessments of unprecedented travel inconvenience to the general public are required for all federally-funded highway infrastructure improvement projects. These assessments are critical, but they are also very difficult to perform. Most existing prediction approaches are project-specific, shortterm, and univariate, thus incapable of benchmarking the potential traffic impact of CWZs for highway construction projects. This study fills these gaps by creating a big-data-based decision-support framework and testing if it can reliably predict the potential impact of a CWZ under arbitrary lane closure scenarios. This study proposes a big-data-based decision-support analytical framework, “Multi-contextual learning for the Impact of Critical Urban highway work Zones” (MICUZ). MICUZ is unique as it models the impact of CWZ operations through a multi-contextual quantitative method utilizing sensored big transportation data. MICUZ was developed through a three-phase modeling process. First, robustness of the collected sensored data was examined through a Wheeler’s repeatability and reproducibility analysis, for the purpose of verifying the homogeneity of the variability of traffic flow data. The analysis results led to a notable conclusion that the proposed framework is feasible due to the relative simplicity and periodicity of highway traffic profiles. Second, a machine-learning algorithm using a Feedforward Neural Networks (FNN) technique was applied to model the multi-contextual aspects of iii long-term traffic flow predictions. The validation study showed that the proposed multi-contextual FNN yields an accurate prediction rate of traffic flow rates and truck percentages. Third, employing these predicted traffic parameters, a curve-fitting modeling technique was implemented to quantify the impact of what-if lane closures on the overall traffic flow. The robustness of the proposed curve-fitting models was then scientifically verified and validated by measuring forecast accuracy. The results of this study convey the fact that MICUZ would recognize how stereotypical regional traffic patterns react to existing CWZs and lane closure tactics, and quantify the probable but reliable travel time delays at CWZs in heavily trafficked urban cores. The proposed framework provides a rigorous theoretical basis for comparatively analyzing what-if construction scenarios, enabling engineers and planners to choose the most efficient transportation management plans much more quickly and accurately

Muchas de estas aplicaciones hacen uso de las capacidades de localización de estos dispositivos. Para poder proporcionar su localización, es necesario identificar la posición del usuario de forma robusta y en tiempo real. Tradicionalmente, esta localización se ha realizado mediante el uso del GPS que proporciona posicionamiento preciso en exteriores. Desafortunadamente, su baja precisión en interiores imposibilita su uso. Para proporcionar localización en interiores se utilizan diferentes tecnologías. Entre ellas, la tecnología WiFi es una de las más usadas debido a sus importantes ventajas tales como la disponibilidad de puntos de acceso WiFi en la mayoría de edificios y que medir la señal WiFi no tiene coste, incluso en redes privadas. Desafortunadamente, también tiene algunas desventajas, ya que en interiores la señal es altamente dependiente de la estructura del edificio por lo que aparecen otros efectos no deseados, como el efecto multicamino o las variaciones de pequeña escala. Además, las redes WiFi están instaladas para maximizar la conectividad sin tener en cuenta su posible uso para localización, por lo que los entornos suelen estar altamente poblados de puntos de acceso, aumentando las interferencias co-canal, que causan variaciones en el nivel de señal recibido. El objetivo de esta tesis es la localización de dispositivos móviles en interiores utilizando como única información el nivel de señal recibido de los puntos de acceso existentes en el entorno. La meta final es desarrollar un sistema de localización WiFi para dispositivos móviles, que pueda ser utilizado en cualquier entorno y por cualquier dispositivo, en tiempo real. Para alcanzar este objetivo, se propone un sistema de localización jerárquico basado en clasificadores borrosos que realizará la localización en entornos descritos topológicamente. Este sistema proporcionará una localización robusta en diferentes escenarios, prestando especial atención a los entornos grandes. Para ello, el sistema diseñado crea una partición jerárquica del entorno usando K-Means. Después, el sistema de localización se entrena utilizando diferentes algoritmos de clasificación supervisada para localizar las nuevas medidas WiFi. Finalmente, se ha diseñado un sistema probabilístico para seguir la posición del dispositivo en movimiento utilizando un filtro Bayesiano. Este sistema se ha probado en un entorno real, con varias plantas, obteniendo un error medio total por debajo de los 3 metros

    Indoor and Outdoor Location Estimation in Large Areas Using Received Signal Strength

    PhDLocation estimation when deployed on wireless networks supports a range of services including user tracking and monitoring, health care support and push and pull marketing. The main subject of this thesis is improving indoor and outdoor location estimation accuracy using received signal strength (RSS) from neighbouring base stations (BSs) or access points (APs), without using the global positioning system (GPS) or triangulation methods. For the outdoor environment, state-of-the-art deterministic and probabilistic algorithms are adapted to exploit principal components (PCs) and clustering. The accuracy is compared with K-nearest neighbour (KNN) algorithms using different partitioning models. The proposed scheme clusters the RSS tuples based on deviations from an estimated RSS attenuation model and then transforms the raw RSS in each cluster into new uncorrelated dimensions, using PCs. As well as simple global dimensionality reduction using PCs, the data reduction and rotation within each cluster improves estimation accuracy because a) each cluster can model the different local RSS distributions and b) it efficiently preserves the RSS correlations that are observed (some of which are substantial) in local regions and which independence approximations ignore. Different simulated and real environments are used for the comparisons. Experimental results show that positioning accuracy is significantly improved and fewer training samples are needed compared with traditional methods. Furthermore, a technique to adjust RSS data so that radio maps collected in different environmental conditions can be used together to enhance accuracy is also demonstrated. Additionally, in the radio coverage domain, a non-parametric probability approach is used for the radio reliability estimation and a semi-supervised learning model is proposed for the monitoring model training and evolution according to real-time mobile users’ RSS feedback. For the indoor environment, an approach for a large multi-story indoor location estimaiii tion using clustering and rank order matching is described. The accuracies using WiFi RSS alone, cellular GSM RSS alone and integrated WiFi and GSM RSS are presented. The methods were tested on real indoor environments. A hierarchical clustering method is used to partition the RSS space, where a cluster is defined as a set of mobile users who share exactly the same strongest RSS ranking set of transmitters. The experimental results show that while integrating of WiFi RSS with GSM RSS creates a marginal improvement, the GSM data can be used to ameliorate the loss of accuracy when AP

    Assessment of k-Nearest Neighbor and Random Forest classifiers for mapping forest fire areas in central Portugal using Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Terra Imagery

    Forest fires threaten the population’s health, biomass, and biodiversity, intensifying the desertification processes and causing temporary damage to conservation areas. Remote sensing has been used to detect, map, and monitor areas that are affected by forest fires due to the fact that the different areas burned by a fire have similar spectral characteristics. This study analyzes the performance of the k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) and Random Forest (RF) classifiers for the classification of an area that is affected by fires in central Portugal. For that, image data from Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Terra satellites and the peculiarities of each of these platforms with the support of Jeffries–Matusita (JM) separability statistics were analyzed. The event under study was a 93.40 km2 fire that occurred on 20 July 2019 and was located in the districts of Santarém and Castelo Branco. The results showed that the problems of spectral mixing, registration date, and those associated with the spatial resolution of the sensors were the main factors that led to commission errors with variation between 1% and 15.7% and omission errors between 8.8% and 20%. The classifiers, which performed well, were assessed using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve method, generating maps that were compared based on the areas under the curves (AUC). All of the AUC were greater than 0.88 and the Overall Accuracy (OA) ranged from 89 to 93%.
