    A new vision of software defined radio: from academic experimentation to industrial explotation

    The broad objective of this study is to examine the role of Software Defined Radio in an industrial field. Basically examines the changes that have to be done to achieve moving this technology in a commercial domain. It is important to predict the impacts of the introduction of Software Defined Radio in the telecommunications industry because it is a real future that is coming. The project starts with the evolution of mobile telecommunications systems through the history. Following this, Software Defined Radio is defined and its main features are commented such as its architecture. Moreover, it wants to predict the changes that the telecommunications industry will might suffer with the introduction of SDR and some future structural and organizational variations are suggested.     Solution analysis of universal wireless joint point technologies for heterogeneous tactical networks

    The scope of this thesis is to analyze the feasibility of having different wireless mesh network architectures transfer data to a wired network via a joint (universal) access point (UAP). Additionally this thesis analyzes the feasibility of using similar joint (universal) access point technology to allow heterogeneous wireless mesh network devices in close proximally to the UAP transmit data to/from each other via the UAP. This research also includes evaluating COTS tools for possible implementation of a joint access point as well as seeking partnership with private industry to assist in research efforts and/or the development or joint (universal) access point solution(s).     Software defined radio : a system engineering view of platform architecture and market diffusion

New products require integrating knowledge across technologies, architectures, and functions in new ways, building product platforms that can adapt to changes in markets and product design throughout the product development process. In particular, the wireless telecommunications industry is plagued by multiple incompatible dominant second-generation standards, with each with separate migration paths to future third generation functionality. The high initial investments in spectrum and infrastructure, and corresponding switching costs, call out for a technological solution that can both evolve with the rapid advances in technology and potentially operates seamlessly across multiple incompatible networks to unify a highly fragmented system. In a system engineering context, this thesis investigates the use of software define radio technology (SDR) as a potential replacement for hardware solutions to the multiple air interface standard problem. This thesis investigates the role of product platform architectures in product market diffusion by studying the selection of appropriate system and product architectures, product market diffusion, and the formation of a system dominant design. Using software defined radio (SDR) technology in the wireless telecommunications industry as a case study, the emergence of SDR as a potential replacement for multiple mobile phone standards is investigated. Compared with interim compatibility solutions that combine multiple air interfaces through hardware. SDRs are an emerging technology that promises to combine multiple air-interfaces into a single wireless phone platform though software configuration. Market and organizational disruptions are determined, and how platform architecture concepts can be used to mitigate these disruptions. The history of the wireless telecommunications industry is presented to highlight the determinants of product and standards success in the wireless industry. The transition between first-generation (1G) wireless, second-generation (2G) wireless, and the interim high data rate second-generation (2.5 G) system currently being rolled out is discussed. Geographical differences in standards acceptance and the role of government policies are discussed. The strong network effects in the industry are illustrated by the late success of GSM technology in the United States market. The mode of technological standard interaction or competition is determined through the use of the Lotka-Volterra model of technological interaction and lessons learned applied to third generation systems. Plans for third generation (3G) wireless are presented, and the various transition paths from 2G to 3G are discussed. The challenges of transitioning between technologies (technological discontinuities) are highlighted through a discussion of the installed base of legacy equipment. Software defined radio (SDR) technology is presented, and a platform architecture is developed in the context of 3G market penetration.     An architecture for software defined wireless networking

    Software defined networking, characterized by a clear separation of the control and data planes, is being adopted as a novel paradigm for wired networking. With SDN, network operators can run their infrastructure more efficiently, supporting faster deployment of new services while enabling key features such as virtualization. In this article, we adopt an SDN-like approach applied to wireless mobile networks that will not only benefit from the same features as in the wired case, but will also leverage on the distinct features of mobile deployments to push improvements even further. We illustrate with a number of representative use cases the benefits of the adoption of the proposed architecture, which is detailed in terms of modules, interfaces, and high-level signaling.     Investigation of an intelligent personalised service recommendation system in an IMS based cellular mobile network

    Success or failure of future information and communication services in general and mobile communications in particular is greatly dependent on the level of personalisations they can offer. While the provision of anytime, anywhere, anyhow services has been the focus of wireless telecommunications in recent years, personalisation however has gained more and more attention as the unique selling point of mobile devices. Smart phones should be intelligent enough to match user’s unique needs and preferences to provide a truly personalised service tailored for the individual user. In the first part of this thesis, the importance and role of personalisation in future mobile networks is studied. This is followed, by an agent based futuristic user scenario that addresses the provision of rich data services independent of location. Scenario analysis identifies the requirements and challenges to be solved for the realisation of a personalised service. An architecture based on IP Multimedia Subsystem is proposed for mobility and to provide service continuity whilst roaming between two different access standards. Another aspect of personalisation, which is user preference modelling, is investigated in the context of service selection in a multi 3rd party service provider environment. A model is proposed for the automatic acquisition of user preferences to assist in service selection decision-making. User preferences are modelled based on a two-level Bayesian Metanetwork. Personal agents incorporating the proposed model provide answers to preference related queries such as cost, QoS and service provider reputation. This allows users to have their preferences considered automatically

    An architecture for converging reconfigurable radio systems

    Since mobile telecommunication systems were rst introduced in the early 1980s they have become a pervasive part of modern life, with an estimated 85% of the global population believed to be in possession of a mobile communications device. To address the ever-increasing demand for fast ubiquitous provision of multimedia and data services, new Radio Access Technologies (RATs) capable of meeting those demands are constantly being developed and standardised. Currently the fourth generation of RATs is being deployed by network operators around the world, with standards bodies already working to develop and standardise even more advanced RATs. The introduction of any new, and often upgraded, RATs almost always requires network operators to purchase new hardware systems capable of supporting the new RATs, which must then be integrated with the plethora of RATs already present in the network operator's heterogeneous Radio Access Network (RAN). This process is costly and poses risks for network operators, as they must rst invest signi cant amounts of capital on new network hardware and then they have to convince their subscribers to purchase new mobile devices which are capable of supporting the new RAT. Recon gurable Radio Systems (RRSs) are a relatively new approach to developing, implementing and managing RATs within a RAN. A RRS di ers from a traditional radio system, in that each RAT is de ned in software which can be reused across multiple generic hardware platforms. Many RRSs also provide the functionality to manage and control the dynamic implementation of di erent RATs in network elements throughout a RAN. Although RRSs are the subject of numerous research e orts, there is currently no unifying approach or set of requirements for an RRS architecture or framework. In- stead various researchers focus their e orts on speci c topics relating to RRS, such as the recon gurable management system, or how RATs are modelled and implemented in software. This lack of formal standardisation or approach to developing RRSs represents a hindrance to the widespread adoption of RRSs
