State-of-the-Art Survey of Additive Manufacturing Technologies, Methods, and Materials

    Get PDF
The rapid pace of development in additive manufacturing (AM) technology, as well as its interdisciplinary and international nature, makes it an extremely difficult subject to present clearly, concisely, and completely. Daily, more progress is being made toward the maturation of the technology and new applications are being found to utilize it. The purpose of this treatise is not to present a rundown of the “latest developments” in AM; it is a serious attempt to survey and present the mechanics, rationale, basic theory, purpose, practical applications, and limitations of additive manufacturing in the context of engineering and science. The mission of this project is to answer the question “what exactly is additive manufacturing?” In order to answer this, it is essential to look past the media celebration and “cool, revolutionary technology” label. These days it is common to see news items and articles in technical magazines praising 3D printing and AM as the “3rd Industrial Revolution” or a “miracle technology” that is going to solve all of the world’s problems; are these claims true or simple media hype? To find out just how well-developed and the technology really is and to provide a basis for future research, a very extensive literature review will be performed and the results will be summarized and organized into this paper. The best available references will be utilized, particularly peer- reviewed journal articles, original process patents, industry standards, recent technical conference proceedings, and books written by well-respected authorities on the subject.Ope

Materials dependencies for dual-use technologies relevant to Europe's defence sector

    Get PDF
In order to support the European Commission in the preparation of future initiatives fostering the sustainability of strategic supply chains, this study was commissioned to assess bottlenecks in the supply of materials needed for the development of technologies important to Europe's defence and civil industries. The study focuses on five dual-use technology areas, namely advanced batteries, fuel cells, robotics, unmanned vehicles and additive manufacturing (3D printing). The technologies are preselected on the basis of a previous study (EASME, 2017) that explored the dual-use potential of key enabling technologies in which Europe should strategically invest. In addition, this report examines how these technologies could address specific military needs and their differences in relation to civil needs and identified opportunities for future defence research areas that could potentially serve as a basis for the design of research initiatives to be funded under the future European Defence Fund. Moreover, potential opportunities for common policy actions are also identified, notably: to strengthen Europe's position in the selected technologies’ supply chains; to facilitate collaboration between stakeholders; to increase industry involvement with special emphasis on small and medium-sized enterprises; to improve existent legislation; and increase synergies between civil and defence sectors in order to speed up progress in promising research areas.JRC.C.7-Knowledge for the Energy Unio

The Future Role of Strategic Landpower

    Get PDF
Recent Russian aggression in Ukraine has reenergized military strategists and senior leaders to evaluate the role of strategic Landpower. American leadership in the European theater has mobilized allies and partners to reconsider force postures for responding to possible aggression against NATO members. Although Russian revisionist activity remains a threat in Europe, the challenges in the Pacific for strategic Landpower must also be considered. At the same time, the homeland, the Arctic, climate change, and the results of new and emerging technology also challenge the application of strategic Landpower. This publication serves as part of an enduring effort to evaluate strategic Landpower’s role, authorities, and resources for accomplishing the national strategic goals the Joint Force may face in the next conflict. This study considers multinational partners, allies, and senior leaders that can contribute to overcoming these enduring challenges. The insights derived from this study, which can be applied to both the European and Indo-Pacific theaters, should help leaders to consider these challenges, which may last a generation. Deterrence demands credible strategic response options integrated across warfighting functions. This valuable edition will continue the dialogue about addressing these issues as well as other emerging ones.https://press.armywarcollege.edu/monographs/1959/thumbnail.jp

Today’s global economy offers more opportunities, but is also more complex and competitive than ever before. This fact leads to a wide range of research activity in different fields of interest, especially in the so-called high-tech sectors. This book is a result of widespread research and development activity from many researchers worldwide, covering the aspects of development activities in general, as well as various aspects of the practical application of knowledge

    The Persistence of Technology

    Get PDF
Repair, reuse and disposal are closely interlinked phenomena related to the service lives and persistence of technologies. When technical artefacts become old and worn out, decisions have to be taken: is it necessary, worthwhile or even possible to maintain and repair, reuse or dismantle them - or must they be discarded? These decisions depend on factors such as the availability of second-hand markets, repair infrastructures and dismantling or disposal facilities. In telling the stories of China's power grid, Canadian telephones, German automobiles and India's shipbreaking business, among others, the contributions in this volume highlight the persistence of technologies and show that maintenance and repair are not obsolete in modern industries and consumer societies
