    A framework for hull form reverse engineering and geometry integration into numerical simulations

    The thesis presents a ship hull form specific reverse engineering and CAD integration framework. The reverse engineering part proposes three alternative suitable reconstruction approaches namely curves network, direct surface fitting, and triangulated surface reconstruction. The CAD integration part includes surface healing, region identification, and domain preparation strategies which used to adapt the CAD model to downstream application requirements. In general, the developed framework bridges a point cloud and a CAD model obtained from IGES and STL file into downstream applications

    An approach to construct a three-dimensional isogeometric model from µ-CT scan data with an application to the bridge of a violin

    We present an algorithm to build a ready to use isogeometric model from scan data gained by a µ-CT scan. Based on a three-dimensional multi-patch reference geometry, which includes the major topological features, we fit the outline, then the cross-section and finally the three-dimensional geometry. The key step is to fit the outline, where a non-linear least squares problem is solved with a Gauss-Newton approach presented by Borges and Pastva (2002). We extend this approach by a regularisation and a precise interpolation of selected data points. The resulting NURBS geometry is ready for applying isogeometric analysis tools for efficient numerical simulations. As a particular example we examine the scan data of a violin bridge and present the complete workflow from the µ-CT scan up to the numerical simulation based on isogeometric mortar methods. We illustrate the relevance of the constructed geometry with a vibro-acoustical application

    Feasible Form Parameter Design of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry

    This thesis introduces a new methodology for robust form parameter design of complex hull form geometry via constraint programming, automatic differentiation, interval arithmetic, and truncated hierarchical B- splines. To date, there has been no clearly stated methodology for assuring consistency of general (equality and inequality) constraints across an entire geometric form parameter ship hull design space. In contrast, the method to be given here can be used to produce guaranteed narrowing of the design space, such that infeasible portions are eliminated. Furthermore, we can guarantee that any set of form parameters generated by our method will be self consistent. It is for this reason that we use the title feasible form parameter design. In form parameter design, a design space is represented by a tuple of design parameters which are extended in each design space dimension. In this representation, a single feasible design is a consistent set of real valued parameters, one for every component of the design space tuple. Using the methodology to be given here, we pick out designs which consist of consistent parameters, narrowed to any desired precision up to that of the machine, even for equality constraints. Furthermore, the method is developed to enable the generation of complex hull forms using an extension of the basic rules idea to allow for automated generation of rules networks, plus the use of the truncated hierarchical B-splines, a wavelet-adaptive extension of standard B-splines and hierarchical B-splines. The adaptive resolution methods are employed in order to allow an automated program the freedom to generate complex B-spline representations of the geometry in a robust manner across multiple levels of detail. Thus two complementary objectives are pursued: ensuring feasible starting sets of form parameters, and enabling the generation of complex hull form geometry

    A tool to create hydrodynamically optimized hull-forms with geometrical constraints from internal arrangements

Traditionally, in the design process, the centerpiece of the effort is the hull and its hydrodynamic performance. Once the hull of a ship has been selected, all the other systems, like propulsion and electric plants, are selected and fitted in the ship. Due to the fact that the hull is considered as the most important system of the ship, any compromises and systems trade-offs that need to be done in the design process are focused mainly on all the systems apart from the hull-form. This inherent prioritization in the traditional design process, might lead to the selection of suboptimal solutions for the other systems like the propulsion and electric plants, which in turns might lead to a global suboptimal solution for the whole ship design. Unfortunately, these decisions bound the designed ship for lifetime and, down the road, might lead to excess operational costs. The tool developed in this thesis treats the internal arrangements and the hull-form of the ship as two systems that need to be optimized together and not on a decoupled manner. Thus, the selection of the propulsion and electric plants or even large weapon systems like VLCs becomes as important as the hull during the design process. Propulsion and electric systems can be preselected in the early stage design, based on their efficiency and then a hull can be wrapped around them. The optimization of the hull can be done either with the use of the Holtrop method or a potential flow panel method, which provides higher fidelity. The designer has the ability to utilize this tool in order to easily conduct trade-off studies between the internal arrangements and the hull-form or save time from their integration and allocate it in other important problems of the design.     NASA geometry data exchange specification for computational fluid dynamics (NASA IGES)

    This document specifies a subset of an existing product data exchange specification that is widely used in industry and government. The existing document is called the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification. This document, a subset of IGES, is intended for engineers analyzing product performance using tools such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. This document specifies how to define mathematically and exchange the geometric model of an object. The geometry is represented utilizing nonuniform rational B-splines (NURBS) curves and surfaces. Only surface models are represented; no solid model representation is included. This specification does not include most of the other types of product information available in IGES (e.g., no material properties or surface finish properties) and does not provide all the specific file format details of IGES. The data exchange protocol specified in this document is fully conforming to the American National Standard (ANSI) IGES 5.2

    Wave-resistance computation via CFD and IGA-BEM solvers : a comparative study

    This paper delivers a preliminary comparative study on the computation of wave resistance via a commercial CFD solver (STAR-CCM+®) versus an in-house developed IGA-BEM solver for a pair of hulls, namely the parabolic Wigley hull and the KRISO container ship (KCS). The CFD solver combines a VOF (Volume Of Fluid) free-surface modelling technique with alternative turbulence models, while the IGA-BEM solver adopts an inviscid flow model that combines the Boundary Element approach (BEM) with Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) using T-splines or NURBS. IGA is a novel and expanding concept, introduced by Hughes and his collaborators (Hughes et al, 2005), aiming to intrinsically integrate CAD with Analysis by communicating the CAD model of the geometry (the wetted ship hull in our case) to the solver without any approximation

    An unstructured immersed finite element method for nonlinear solid mechanics.

    We present an immersed finite element technique for boundary-value and interface problems from nonlinear solid mechanics. Its key features are the implicit representation of domain boundaries and interfaces, the use of Nitsche's method for the incorporation of boundary conditions, accurate numerical integration based on marching tetrahedrons and cut-element stabilisation by means of extrapolation. For discretisation structured and unstructured background meshes with Lagrange basis functions are considered. We show numerically and analytically that the introduced cut-element stabilisation technique provides an effective bound on the size of the Nitsche parameters and, in turn, leads to well-conditioned system matrices. In addition, we introduce a novel approach for representing and analysing geometries with sharp features (edges and corners) using an implicit geometry representation.     A basis for the representation, manufacturing tool path generation and scanning measurement of smooth freeform surfaces

    Freeform surfaces find wide application, particularly in optics, from unique single-surface science programmes to mobile phone lenses manufactured in billions. This thesis presents research into the mathematical and algorithmic basis for the generation and measurement of smooth freeform surfaces. Two globally significant cases are reported: 1) research in this thesis created prototype segments for the world’s largest telescope; 2) research in this thesis made surfaces underpinning the redefinition of one of the seven SI base units – the kelvin - and also what will be the newly (and permanently) defined value for the Boltzmann constant. Theresearchdemonstratestwounderlyingphilosophiesofprecisionengineering, the critical roles of determinism and of precision measurement in precise manufacturing. The thesis presents methods, and reports their implementation, for the manufacture of freeform surfaces through a comprehensive strategy for tool path generation using minimum axis-count ultra-precision machine tools. In the context of freeform surface machining, the advantages of deterministic motion performance of three-axis machines are brought to bear through a novel treatment of the mathematics of variable contact point geometry. This is applied to ultra-precision diamond turning and ultra-precision large optics grinding with the Cranfield Box machine. New techniques in freeform surface representation, tool path generation, freeform tool shape representation and error compensation are presented. A comprehensive technique for very high spatial resolution CMM areal scanning of freeform surfaces is presented, with a new treatment of contact error removal, achieving interferometer-equivalent surface representation, with 1,000,000+ points and sub-200 nm rms noise without the use of any low-pass filtering
