    Multiframe Temporal Estimation of Cardiac Nonrigid Motion

    A robust, flexible system for tracking the point to point nonrigid motion of the left ventricular (LV) endocardial wall in image sequences has been developed. This system is unique in its ability to model motion trajectories across multiple frames. The foundation of this system is an adaptive transversal filter based on the recursive least-squares algorithm. This filter facilitates the integration of models for periodicity and proximal smoothness as appropriate using a contour-based description of the object’s boundaries. A set of correspondences between contours and an associated set of correspondence quality measures comprise the input to the system. Frame-to-frame relationships from two different frames of reference are derived and analyzed using synthetic and actual images. Two multiframe temporal models, both based on a sum of sinusoids, are derived. Illustrative examples of the system’s output are presented for quantitative analysis. Validation of the system is performed by comparing computed trajectory estimates with the trajectories of physical markers implanted in the LV wall. Sample case studies of marker trajectory comparisons are presented. Ensemble statistics from comparisons with 15 marker trajectories are acquired and analyzed. A multiframe temporal model without spatial periodicity constraints was determined to provide excellent performance with the least computational cost.     Segmentation of the left ventricle of the heart in 3-D+t MRI data using an optimized nonrigid temporal model

    Modern medical imaging modalities provide large amounts of information in both the spatial and temporal domains and the incorporation of this information in a coherent algorithmic framework is a significant challenge. In this paper, we present a novel and intuitive approach to combine 3-D spatial and temporal (3-D + time) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data in an integrated segmentation algorithm to extract the myocardium of the left ventricle. A novel level-set segmentation process is developed that simultaneously delineates and tracks the boundaries of the left ventricle muscle. By encoding prior knowledge about cardiac temporal evolution in a parametric framework, an expectation-maximization algorithm optimally tracks the myocardial deformation over the cardiac cycle. The expectation step deforms the level-set function while the maximization step updates the prior temporal model parameters to perform the segmentation in a nonrigid sense

    Pedestrian Detection and Tracking in Video Surveillance System: Issues, Comprehensive Review, and Challenges

    Pedestrian detection and monitoring in a surveillance system are critical for numerous utility areas which encompass unusual event detection, human gait, congestion or crowded vicinity evaluation, gender classification, fall detection in elderly humans, etc. Researchers’ primary focus is to develop surveillance system that can work in a dynamic environment, but there are major issues and challenges involved in designing such systems. These challenges occur at three different levels of pedestrian detection, viz. video acquisition, human detection, and its tracking. The challenges in acquiring video are, viz. illumination variation, abrupt motion, complex background, shadows, object deformation, etc. Human detection and tracking challenges are varied poses, occlusion, crowd density area tracking, etc. These results in lower recognition rate. A brief summary of surveillance system along with comparisons of pedestrian detection and tracking technique in video surveillance is presented in this chapter. The publicly available pedestrian benchmark databases as well as the future research directions on pedestrian detection have also been discussed

    Physics-Based Modeling, Analysis and Animation

    The idea of using physics-based models has received considerable interest in computer graphics and computer vision research the last ten years. The interest arises from the fact that simple geometric primitives cannot accurately represent natural objects. In computer graphics physics-based models are used to generate and visualize constrained shapes, motions of rigid and nonrigid objects and object interactions with the environment for the purposes of animation. On the other hand, in computer vision, the method applies to complex 3-D shape representation, shape reconstruction and motion estimation. In this paper we review two models that have been used in computer graphics and two models that apply to both areas. In the area of computer graphics, Miller [48] uses a mass-spring model to animate three forms of locomotion of snakes and worms. To overcome the problem of the multitude of degrees of freedom associated with the mass-spring lattices, Witkin and Welch [87] present a geometric method to model global deformations. To achieve the same result Pentland and Horowitz in [54] delineate the object motion into rigid and nonrigid deformation modes. To overcome problems of these two last approaches, Metaxas and Terzopoulos in [45] successfully combine local deformations with global ones. Modeling based on physical principles is a potent technique for computer graphics and computer vision. It is a rich and fruitful area for research in terms of both theory and applications. It is important, though, to develop concepts, methodologies, and techniques which will be widely applicable to many types of applications

    Multi-Level Shape Representation Using Global Deformations and Locally Adaptive Finite Elements

    We present a model-based method for the multi-level shape, pose estimation and abstraction of an object’s surface from range data. The surface shape is estimated based on the parameters of a superquadric that is subjected to global deformations (tapering and bending) and a varying number of levels of local deformations. Local deformations are implemented using locally adaptive finite elements whose shape functions are piecewise cubic functions with C1 continuity. The surface pose is estimated based on the model\u27s translational and rotational degrees of freedom. The algorithm first does a coarse fit, solving for a first approximation to the translation, rotation and global deformation parameters and then does several passes of mesh refinement, by locally subdividing triangles based on the distance between the given datapoints and the model. The adaptive finite element algorithm ensures that during subdivision the desirable finite element mesh generation properties of conformity, non-degeneracy and smoothness are maintained. Each pass of the algorithm uses physics-based modeling techniques to iteratively adjust the global and local parameters of the model in response to forces that are computed from approximation errors between the model and the data. We present results demonstrating the multi-level shape representation for both sparse and dense range data

    Frequency-based Non-rigid Motion Analysis: Application to Four Dimensional Medical Images

    International audienceWe present a method for nonrigid motion analysis in time sequences of volume images (4D data). In this method, nonrigid motion of the deforming object contour is dynamically approximated by a physically-based deformable surface. In order to reduce the number of parameters describing the deformation, we make use of a modal analysis which provides a spatial smoothing of the surface. The deformation spectrum, which outlines the main excited modes, can be efficiently used for deformation comparison. Fourier analysis on time signals of the main deformation spectrum components provides a ternporal smoothing of the data. Thus a complex nonrigid deformation is described by only a few parameters: the main excited modes and the main Fourier harmonics. Therefore, 4D data can be analyzed in a very concise manner. The power and robustness of the approach is illustrated by various results on medical data. We believe that our method has important applications in automatic diagnosis of heart diseases and in motion compression

    A Simple Regularizer for B-spline Nonrigid Image Registration That Encourages Local Invertibility

    Nonrigid image registration is an important task for many medical imaging applications. In particular, for radiation oncology it is desirable to track respiratory motion for thoracic cancer treatment. B-splines are convenient for modeling nonrigid deformations, but ensuring invertibility can be a challenge. This paper describes sufficient conditions for local invertibility of deformations based on B-spline bases. These sufficient conditions can be used with constrained optimization to enforce local invertibility. We also incorporate these conditions into nonrigid image registration methods based on a simple penalty approach that encourages diffeomorphic deformations. Traditional Jacobian penalty methods penalize negative Jacobian determinant values only at grid points. In contrast, our new method enforces a sufficient condition for invertibility directly on the deformation coefficients to encourage invertibility globally over a 3-D continuous domain.     Physical simulation for monocular 3D model based tracking

    The problem of model-based object tracking in three dimensions is addressed. Most previous work on tracking assumes simple motion models, and consequently tracking typically fails in a variety of situations. Our insight is that incorporating physics models of object behaviour improves tracking performance in these cases. In particular it allows us to handle tracking in the face of rigid body interactions where there is also occlusion and fast object motion. We show how to incorporate rigid body physics simulation into a particle filter. We present two methods for this based on pose and force noise. The improvements are tested on four videos of a robot pushing an object, and results indicate that our approach performs considerably better than a plain particle filter tracker, with the force noise method producing the best results over the range of test videos
