    Knowledge-Aided STAP Using Low Rank and Geometry Properties

    This paper presents knowledge-aided space-time adaptive processing (KA-STAP) algorithms that exploit the low-rank dominant clutter and the array geometry properties (LRGP) for airborne radar applications. The core idea is to exploit the fact that the clutter subspace is only determined by the space-time steering vectors, {red}{where the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization approach is employed to compute the clutter subspace. Specifically, for a side-looking uniformly spaced linear array, the} algorithm firstly selects a group of linearly independent space-time steering vectors using LRGP that can represent the clutter subspace. By performing the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure, the orthogonal bases of the clutter subspace are obtained, followed by two approaches to compute the STAP filter weights. To overcome the performance degradation caused by the non-ideal effects, a KA-STAP algorithm that combines the covariance matrix taper (CMT) is proposed. For practical applications, a reduced-dimension version of the proposed KA-STAP algorithm is also developed. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms, and show that the proposed algorithms converge rapidly and provide a SINR improvement over existing methods when using a very small number of snapshots.Comment: 16 figures, 12 pages.     Multi-PRI Signal Processing for the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar. Part I: Clutter Filtering

    Multiple pulse repetition interval (multi-PRI) transmission is part of an adaptive signal transmission and processing algorithm being developed to aggressively combat range–velocity ambiguity in weather radars. In the past, operational use of multi-PRI pulse trains has been hampered due to the difficulty in clutter filtering. This paper presents finite impulse response clutter filter designs for multi-PRI signals with excellent magnitude and phase responses. These filters provide strong suppression for use on low-elevation scans and yield low biases of velocity estimates so that accurate velocity dealiasing is possible. Specifically, the filters are designed for use in the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) and are shown to meet base data bias requirements equivalent to the Federal Aviation Administration’s specifications for the current TDWR clutter filters. Also an adaptive filter selection algorithm is proposed that bases its decision on clutter power estimated during an initial long-PRI surveillance scan. Simulations show that this adaptive algorithm yields satisfactory biases for reflectivity, velocity, and spectral width. Implementation of such a scheme would enable automatic elimination of anomalous propagation signals and constant adjustment to evolving ground clutter conditions, an improvement over the current TDWR clutter filtering system.United States.     Bistatic noise radar: Demonstration of correlation noise suppression

    In this study, spatial separation of the radar transmitter and receiver units is considered, as a means of reducing the masking effect in noise radars. A bistatic radar system is constructed, with emphasis on a lightweight transmitter unit that can be mounted on a commercial Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The system uses pseudo-random noise, generated digitally at the receiver and transmitter units. Correlation losses, due to non-linearities in the transmitter and receiver units, are measured to 0.1\ua0dB. This study shows that by separating the transmitter and receiver unit the masking effect is significantly reduced, compared to a monostatic setup. This reduction is enough for the system to detect a slow flying UAV. Thus, bistatic separation should be considered as a practical tool to reduce the masking effect. By processing clutter with an extended CLEAN algorithm, the correlation noise floor is further suppressed

    FM airborne passive radar

    The airborne application of Passive Bistatic Radar (PBR) is the latest evolution of the now established international interest in passive radar techniques. An airborne passive system is cheaper to construct, easier to cool, lighter and requires less power than a traditional active radar system. These properties make it ideal for installation on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), especially for the next generation of Low Observable (LO) UAVs, complementing the platforms LO design with an inherently Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) air-to-air and air-to-ground sensing capability. A comprehensive literature review identified a lack of practical and theoretical research in airborne passive bistatic radar and a quantitative model was designed in order to un- derstand the theoretical performance achievable using a hypothetical system and FM as the illuminator of opportunity. The results demonstrated a useable surveillance volume, assuming conservative estimates for the receiver parameters and allowed the scoping and specification of an airborne demonstrator system. The demonstrator system was subsequently designed and constructed and flown on airborne experiments to collect data for both air-to-air and air-to-ground operation analysis. Subsequent processing demonstrated the successful detection of air targets which correlated with the actual aircraft positions as recorded by a Mode-S/ADS-B receiver. This is the first time this has been conclusively demonstrated in the literature. Doppler Beam Sharpening was used to create a coarse resolution image allowing the normalised bistatic clutter RCS of the stationary surface clutter to be analysed. This is the first time this technique has been applied to an airborne passive system and has yielded the first quantitive values of normalised bistatic clutter RCS at VHF. This successful demonstration of airborne passive radar techniques provides the proof of concept and identifies the key research areas that need to be addressed in order to fully develop this technology

    Adaptive Illumination Patterns for Radar Applications

    The fundamental goal of Fully Adaptive Radar (FAR) involves full exploitation of the joint, synergistic adaptivity of the radar\u27s transmitter and receiver. Little work has been done to exploit the joint space time Degrees-of-Freedom (DOF) available via an Active Electronically Steered Array (AESA) during the radar\u27s transmit illumination cycle. This research introduces Adaptive Illumination Patterns (AIP) as a means for exploiting this previously untapped transmit DOF. This research investigates ways to mitigate clutter interference effects by adapting the illumination pattern on transmit. Two types of illumination pattern adaptivity were explored, termed Space Time Illumination Patterns (STIP) and Scene Adaptive Illumination Patterns (SAIP). Using clairvoyant knowledge, STIP demonstrates the ability to remove sidelobe clutter at user specified Doppler frequencies, resulting in optimum receiver performance using a non-adaptive receive processor. Using available database knowledge, SAIP demonstrated the ability to reduce training data heterogeneity in dense target environments, thereby greatly improving the minimum discernable velocity achieved through STAP processing

    A scalable real-time processing chain for radar exploiting illuminators of opportunity

    Includes bibliographical references.This thesis details the design of a processing chain and system software for a commensal radar system, that is, a radar that makes use of illuminators of opportunity to provide the transmitted waveform. The stages of data acquisition from receiver back-end, direct path interference and clutter suppression, range/Doppler processing and target detection are described and targeted to general purpose commercial off-the-shelf computing hardware. A detailed low level design of such a processing chain for commensal radar which includes both processing stages and processing stage interactions has, to date, not been presented in the Literature. Furthermore, a novel deployment configuration for a networked multi-site FM broadcast band commensal radar system is presented in which the reference and surveillance channels are record at separate locations

    On Spectral Estimation and Bistatic Clutter Suppression in Radar Systems

    Target detection serve as one of the primary objectives in a radar system. From observations, contaminated by receiver thermal noise and interference, the processor needs to determine between target absence or target presence in the current measurements. To enable target detection, the observations are filtered by a series of signal processing algorithms. The algorithms aim to extract information used in subsequent calculations from the observations. In this thesis and the appended papers, we investigate two techniques used for radar signal processing; spectral estimation and space-time adaptive processing.\ua0In this thesis, spectral estimation is considered for signals that can be well represented by a parametric model. The considered problem aims to estimate frequency components and their corresponding amplitudes and damping factors from noisy measurements. In a radar system, the problem of gridless angle-Doppler-range estimation can be formulated in this way. The main contribution of our work includes an investigation of the connection between constraints on rank and matrix structure with the accuracy of the estimates.Space-time adaptive processing is a technique used to mitigate the influence of interference and receiver thermal noise in airborne radar systems. To obtain a proper mitigation, an accurate estimate of the space-time covariance matrix in the currently investigated cell under test is required. Such an estimate is based on secondary data from adjacent range bins to the cell under test. In this work, we consider airborne bistatic radar systems. Such systems obtains non-stationary secondary data due to geometry-induced range variations in the angle-Doppler domain. Thus, the secondary data will not follow the same distribution as the observed snapshot in the cell under test. In this work, we present a method which estimates the space-time covariance matrix based upon a parametric model of the current radar scenario. The parameters defining the scenario are derived as a maximum likelihood estimate using the available secondary data. If used in a detector, this approach approximately corresponds to a generalized likelihood ratio test, as unknowns are replaced with their maximum likelihood estimates based on secondary data

    Passive radar on moving platforms exploiting DVB-T transmitters of opportunity

    The work, effort, and research put into passive radar for stationary receivers have shown significant developments and progress in recent years. The next challenge is mounting a passive radar on moving platforms for the purpose of target detection and ground imaging, e.g. for covert border control. A passive radar on a moving platform has many advantages and offers many benefits, however there is also a considerable drawback that has limited its application so far. Due to the movement the clutter returns are spread in Doppler and may overlap moving targets, which are then difficult to detect. While this problem is common for an active radar as well, with a passive radar a further problem arises: It is impossible to control the exploited time-varying waveform emitted from a telecommunication transmitter. A conventional processing approach is ineffective as the time-varying waveform leads to residuals all over the processed data. Therefore a dedicated clutter cancellation method, e.g. the displaced phase centre antenna (DPCA) approach, does not have the ability to completely remove the clutter, so that target detection is considerably limited. The aim must be therefore to overcome this limitation by exploiting a processing technique, which is able to remove these residuals in order to cope with the clutter returns thus making target detection feasible. The findings of this research and thesis show that a reciprocal filtering based stage is able to provide a time-invariant impulse response similar to the transmissions of an active radar. Due to this benefit it is possible to achieve an overall complete clutter removal together with a dedicated DPCA stage, so that moving target detection is considerably improved, making it possible in the first place. Based on mathematical analysis and on simulations it is proven, that by exploiting this processing in principle an infinite clutter cancellation can be achieved. This result shows that the reciprocal filter is an essential processing stage. Applications on real data acquired from two different measurement campaigns prove these results. By the proposed approach, the limiting factor (i.e. the time-varying waveform) for target detection is negotiated, and in principle any clutter cancellation technique known from active radar can be applied. Therefore this analysis and the results provide a substantial contribution to the passive radar research community and enables it to address the next questions
