    Scalable parallel evolutionary optimisation based on high performance computing

    Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have been successfully applied to solve various challenging optimisation problems. Due to their stochastic nature, EAs typically require considerable time to find desirable solutions; especially for increasingly complex and large-scale problems. As a result, many works studied implementing EAs on parallel computing facilities to accelerate the time-consuming processes. Recently, the rapid development of modern parallel computing facilities such as the high performance computing (HPC) bring not only unprecedented computational capabilities but also challenges on designing parallel algorithms. This thesis mainly focuses on designing scalable parallel evolutionary optimisation (SPEO) frameworks which run efficiently on the HPC. Motivated by the interesting phenomenon that many EAs begin to employ increasingly large population sizes, this thesis firstly studies the effect of a large population size through comprehensive experiments. Numerical results indicate that a large population benefits to the solving of complex problems but requires a large number of maximal fitness evaluations (FEs). However, since sequential EAs usually requires a considerable computing time to achieve extensive FEs, we propose a scalable parallel evolutionary optimisation framework that can efficiently deploy parallel EAs over many CPU cores at CPU-only HPC. On the other hand, since EAs using a large number of FEs can produce massive useful information in the course of evolution, we design a surrogate-based approach to learn from this historical information and to better solve complex problems. Then this approach is implemented in parallel based on the proposed scalable parallel framework to achieve remarkable speedups. Since demanding a great computing power on CPU-only HPC is usually very expensive, we design a framework based on GPU-enabled HPC to improve the cost-effectiveness of parallel EAs. The proposed framework can efficiently accelerate parallel EAs using many GPUs and can achieve superior cost-effectiveness. However, since it is very challenging to correctly implement parallel EAs on the GPU, we propose a set of guidelines to verify the correctness of GPU-based EAs. In order to examine these guidelines, they are employed to verify a GPU-based brain storm optimisation that is also proposed in this thesis. In conclusion, the comprehensively experimental study is firstly conducted to investigate the impacts of a large population. After that, a SPEO framework based on CPU-only HPC is proposed and is employed to accelerate a time-consuming implementation of EA. Finally, the correctness verification of implementing EAs based on a single GPU is discussed and the SPEO framework is then extended to be deployed based on GPU-enabled HPC

    Decoder based on Parallel Genetic Algorithm and Multi-objective Optimization for Low Density Parity Check Codes

    Genetic algorithms are powerful search techniques that are used successfully to solve problems in many different disciplines. This article introduces a new Parallel Genetic Algorithm for decoding LDPC codes (PGAD). The results show that the proposed algorithm gives large gains over the Sum-Product decoder, which proves its efficiency. We also show that the fitness function must be improved by Multi-objective Optimization, for this, we applied the Weighted Sum method to improve PGAD, this new version is called (MOGAD) gives higher performance compared to one.     Explicit Building-Block Multiobjective Genetic Algorithms: Theory, Analysis, and Developing

    This dissertation research emphasizes explicit Building Block (BB) based MO EAs performance and detailed symbolic representation. An explicit BB-based MOEA for solving constrained and real-world MOPs is developed the Multiobjective Messy Genetic Algorithm II (MOMGA-II) which is designed to validate symbolic BB concepts. The MOMGA-II demonstrates that explicit BB-based MOEAs provide insight into solving difficult MOPs that is generally not realized through the use of implicit BB-based MOEA approaches. This insight is necessary to increase the effectiveness of all MOEA approaches. In order to increase MOEA computational efficiency parallelization of MOEAs is addressed. Communications between processors in a parallel MOEA implementation is extremely important, hence innovative migration and replacement schemes for use in parallel MOEAs are detailed and tested. These parallel concepts support the development of the first explicit BB-based parallel MOEA the pMOMGA-II. MOEA theory is also advanced through the derivation of the first MOEA population sizing theory. The multiobjective population sizing theory presented derives the MOEA population size necessary in order to achieve good results within a specified level of confidence. Just as in the single objective approach the MOEA population sizing theory presents a very conservative sizing estimate. Validated results illustrate insight into building block phenomena good efficiency excellent effectiveness and motivation for future research in the area of explicit BB-based MOEAs. Thus the generic results of this research effort have applicability that aid in solving many different MOPs

    Reducing the Computational Effort Associated with Evolutionary Optimisation in Single Component Design

    The dissertation presents innovative Evolutionary Search (ES) methods for the reduction in computational expense associated with the optimisation of highly dimensional design spaces. The objective is to develop a semi-automated system which successfully negotiates complex search spaces. Such a system would be highly desirable to a human designer by providing optimised design solutions in realistic time. The design domain represents a real-world industrial problem concerning the optimal material distribution on the underside of a flat roof tile with varying load and support conditions. The designs utilise a large number of design variables (circa 400). Due to the high computational expense associated with analysis such as finite element for detailed evaluation, in order to produce "good" design solutions within an acceptable period of time, the number of calls to the evaluation model must be kept to a minimum. The objective therefore is to minimise the number of calls required to the analysis tool whilst also achieving an optimal design solution. To minimise the number of model evaluations for detailed shape optimisation several evolutionary algorithms are investigated. The better performing algorithms are combined with multi-level search techniques which have been developed to further reduce the number of evaluations and improve quality of design solutions. Multi-level techniques utilise a number of levels of design representation. The solutions of the coarse representations are injected into the more detailed designs for fine grained refinement. The techniques developed include Dynamic Shape Refinement (DSR), Modified Injection Island Genetic Algorithm (MiiGA) and Dynamic Injection Island Genetic Algorithm (DiiGA). The multi-level techniques are able to handle large numbers of design variables (i.e. > 100). Based on the performance characteristics of the individual algorithms and multi-level search techniques, distributed search techniques are proposed. These techniques utilise different evolutionary strategies in a multi-level environment and were developed as a way of further reducing computational expense and improve design solutions. The results indicate a considerable potential for a significant reduction in the number of evaluation calls during evolutionary search. In general this allows a more efficient integration with computationally intensive analytical techniques during detailed design and contribute significantly to those preliminary stages of the design process where a greater degree of analysis is required to validate results from more simplistic preliminary design models

    Heuristic optimization methods are adaptive when they sample problem solutions based on knowledge of the search space gathered from past sampling. Recently, competent evolutionary optimization methods have been developed that adapt via probabilistic modeling of the search space. However, their effectiveness requires the existence of a compact problem decomposition in terms of prespecified solution parameters. How can we use these techniques to effectively and reliably solve program learning problems, given that program spaces will rarely have compact decompositions? One method is to manually build a problem-specific representation that is more tractable than the general space. But can this process be automated? My thesis is that the properties of programs and program spaces can be leveraged as inductive bias to reduce the burden of manual representation-building, leading to competent program evolution. The central contributions of this dissertation are a synthesis of the requirements for competent program evolution, and the design of a procedure, meta-optimizing semantic evolutionary search (MOSES), that meets these requirements. In support of my thesis, experimental results are provided to analyze and verify the effectiveness of MOSES, demonstrating scalability and real-world applicability

    Optimal Design of Steel Towers Using a Multi-Metaheuristic Based Search Method

    In meta-heuristic algorithms, the problem of parameter tuning is one of the most important issues that can be highly time consuming. To overcome this difficulty, a number of researchers have improved the performance of their methods by enhancement and hybridization with other algorithms. In the present paper efforts are made to search design space simultaneously by the Multi Metaheuristic based Search Method (MMSM). In the proposed method, optimization process is performed by dividing the initial population into five subsets so-called islands. An improved multi-metaheuristic method is then employed. After a certain number of repetitions (migration intervals), some percent of the island’s best members are transferred into another island (migration) and replaced by the members of low fitnesses. In the migration phase, the target island is chosen randomly. Examples of large design spaces are utilized to investigate the efficiency of the proposed method. For this purpose, steel are optimized utilizing the proposed method. The results indicate improvements in the available responses
