    Scalable video/image transmission using rate compatible PUM turbo codes

    The robust delivery of video over emerging wireless networks poses many challenges due to the heterogeneity of access networks, the variations in streaming devices, and the expected variations in network conditions caused by interference and coexistence. The proposed approach exploits the joint optimization of a wavelet-based scalable video/image coding framework and a forward error correction method based on PUM turbo codes. The scheme minimizes the reconstructed image/video distortion at the decoder subject to a constraint on the overall transmission bitrate budget. The minimization is achieved by exploiting the rate optimization technique and the statistics of the transmission channel

    Unequal Error Protected JPEG 2000 Broadcast Scheme with Progressive Fountain Codes

    This paper proposes a novel scheme, based on progressive fountain codes, for broadcasting JPEG 2000 multimedia. In such a broadcast scheme, progressive resolution levels of images/video have been unequally protected when transmitted using the proposed progressive fountain codes. With progressive fountain codes applied in the broadcast scheme, the resolutions of images (JPEG 2000) or videos (MJPEG 2000) received by different users can be automatically adaptive to their channel qualities, i.e. the users with good channel qualities are possible to receive the high resolution images/vedio while the users with bad channel qualities may receive low resolution images/vedio. Finally, the performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated with the MJPEG 2000 broadcast prototype

    QUALITY-DRIVEN CROSS LAYER DESIGN FOR MULTIMEDIA SECURITY OVER RESOURCE CONSTRAINED WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS

    The strong need for security guarantee, e.g., integrity and authenticity, as well as privacy and confidentiality in wireless multimedia services has driven the development of an emerging research area in low cost Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs). Unfortunately, those conventional encryption and authentication techniques cannot be applied directly to WMSNs due to inborn challenges such as extremely limited energy, computing and bandwidth resources. This dissertation provides a quality-driven security design and resource allocation framework for WMSNs. The contribution of this dissertation bridges the inter-disciplinary research gap between high layer multimedia signal processing and low layer computer networking. It formulates the generic problem of quality-driven multimedia resource allocation in WMSNs and proposes a cross layer solution. The fundamental methodologies of multimedia selective encryption and stream authentication, and their application to digital image or video compression standards are presented. New multimedia selective encryption and stream authentication schemes are proposed at application layer, which significantly reduces encryption/authentication complexity. In addition, network resource allocation methodologies at low layers are extensively studied. An unequal error protection-based network resource allocation scheme is proposed to achieve the best effort media quality with integrity and energy efficiency guarantee. Performance evaluation results show that this cross layer framework achieves considerable energy-quality-security gain by jointly designing multimedia selective encryption/multimedia stream authentication and communication resource allocation

    Scalable Video Content Adaptation

    Scalable Video Coding technology enables flexible and efficient distribution of videos through heterogeneous networks. In this regard, the present work proposes and evaluates a method for automatically adapting video contents, according to the available bandwidth. Taking advantage of the scalable video streams characteristics, the proposed solution uses bridge firewalls to perform adaptation. In brief, a scalable bitstream is packetized by assigning a different Type of Service field value, according to the corresponding resolutions. Packets corresponding to the full video resolution are then sent to clients. According to the given bandwidth constraints, an intermediate bridge node, which provides Quality of Service functionalities, eventually discards high resolutions information by using appropriate Priority Queueing filtering policies. A real testbed has been used for the evaluation, proving the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed solution

    Layer Selection in Progressive Transmission of Motion-Compensated JPEG2000 Video

    MCJ2K (Motion-Compensated JPEG2000) is a video codec based on MCTF (Motion- Compensated Temporal Filtering) and J2K (JPEG2000). MCTF analyzes a sequence of images, generating a collection of temporal sub-bands, which are compressed with J2K. The R/D (Rate-Distortion) performance in MCJ2K is better than the MJ2K (Motion JPEG2000) extension, especially if there is a high level of temporal redundancy. MCJ2K codestreams can be served by standard JPIP (J2K Interactive Protocol) servers, thanks to the use of only J2K standard file formats. In bandwidth-constrained scenarios, an important issue in MCJ2K is determining the amount of data of each temporal sub-band that must be transmitted to maximize the quality of the reconstructions at the client side. To solve this problem, we have proposed two rate-allocation algorithms which provide reconstructions that are progressive in quality. The first, OSLA (Optimized Sub-band Layers Allocation), determines the best progression of quality layers, but is computationally expensive. The second, ESLA (Estimated-Slope sub-band Layers Allocation), is sub-optimal in most cases, but much faster and more convenient for real-time streaming scenarios. An experimental comparison shows that even when a straightforward motion compensation scheme is used, the R/D performance of MCJ2K competitive is compared not only to MJ2K, but also with respect to other standard scalable video codecs

    QoS provisioning in multimedia streaming

    Multimedia consists of voice, video, and data. Sample applications include video conferencing, video on demand, distance learning, distributed games, and movies on demand. Providing Quality of Service (QoS) for multimedia streaming has been a difficult and challenging problem. When multimedia traffic is transported over a network, video traffic, though usually compressed/encoded for bandwidth reduction, still consumes most of the bandwidth. In addition, compressed video streams typically exhibit highly variable bit rates as well as long range dependence properties, thus exacerbating the challenge in meeting the stringent QoS requirements of multimedia streaming with high network utilization. Dynamic bandwidth allocation in which video traffic prediction can play an important role is thus needed. Prediction of the variation of the I frame size using Least Mean Square (LMS) is first proposed. Owing to a smoother sequence, better prediction has been achieved as compared to the composite MPEG video traffic prediction scheme. One problem with this LMS algorithm is its slow convergence. In Variable Bit Rate (VBR) videos characterized by frequent scene changes, the LMS algorithm may result in an extended period of intractability, and thus may experience excessive cell loss during scene changes. A fast convergent non-linear predictor called Variable Step-size Algorithm (VSA) is subsequently proposed to overcome this drawback. The VSA algorithm not only incurs small prediction errors but more importantly achieves fast convergence. It tracks scene changes better than LMS. Bandwidth is then assigned based on the predicted I frame size which is usually the largest in a Group of Picture (GOP). Hence, the Cell Loss Ratio (CLR) can be kept small. By reserving bandwidth at least equal to the predicted one, only prediction errors need to be buffered. Since the prediction error was demonstrated to resemble white noise or exhibits at most short term memory, smaller buffers, less delay, and higher bandwidth utilization can be achieved. In order to further improve network bandwidth utilization, a QoS guaranteed on-line bandwidth allocation is proposed. This method allocates the bandwidth based on the predicted GOP and required QoS. Simulations and analytical results demonstrate that this scheme provides guaranteed delay and achieves higher bandwidth utilization. Network traffic is generally accepted to be self similar. Aggregating self similar traffic can actually intensify rather than diminish burstiness. Thus, traffic prediction plays an important role in network management. Least Mean Kurtosis (LMK), which uses the negated kurtosis of the error signal as the cost function, is proposed to predict the self similar traffic. Simulation results show that the prediction performance is improved greatly as compared to the LMS algorithm. Thus, it can be used to effectively predict the real time network traffic. The Differentiated Service (DiffServ) model is a less complex and more scalable solution for providing QoS to IP as compared to the Integrated Service (IntServ) model. We propose to transport MPEG frames through various service classes of DiffServ according to the MPEG video characteristics. Performance analysis and simulation results show that our proposed approach can not only guarantee QoS but can also achieve high bandwidth utilization. As the end video quality is determined not only by the network QoS but also by the encoded video quality, we consider video quality from these two aspects and further propose to transport spatial scalable encoded videos over DiffServ. Performance analysis and simulation results show that this can provision QoS guarantees. The dropping policy we propose at the egress router can reduce the traffic load as well as the risk of congestion in other domains

    Wavelet-Based Embedded Rate Scalable Still Image Coders: A review

    Embedded scalable image coding algorithms based on the wavelet transform have received considerable attention lately in academia and in industry in terms of both coding algorithms and standards activity. In addition to providing a very good coding performance, the embedded coder has the property that the bit stream can be truncated at any point and still decodes a reasonably good image. In this paper we present some state-of-the-art wavelet-based embedded rate scalable still image coders. In addition, the JPEG2000 still image compression standard is presented.

    Ubiquitous Scalable Graphics: An End-to-End Framework using Wavelets

    Advances in ubiquitous displays and wireless communications have fueled the emergence of exciting mobile graphics applications including 3D virtual product catalogs, 3D maps, security monitoring systems and mobile games. Current trends that use cameras to capture geometry, material reflectance and other graphics elements means that very high resolution inputs is accessible to render extremely photorealistic scenes. However, captured graphics content can be many gigabytes in size, and must be simplified before they can be used on small mobile devices, which have limited resources, such as memory, screen size and battery energy. Scaling and converting graphics content to a suitable rendering format involves running several software tools, and selecting the best resolution for target mobile device is often done by trial and error, which all takes time. Wireless errors can also affect transmitted content and aggressive compression is needed for low-bandwidth wireless networks. Most rendering algorithms are currently optimized for visual realism and speed, but are not resource or energy efficient on mobile device. This dissertation focuses on the improvement of rendering performance by reducing the impacts of these problems with UbiWave, an end-to-end Framework to enable real time mobile access to high resolution graphics using wavelets. The framework tackles the issues including simplification, transmission, and resource efficient rendering of graphics content on mobile device based on wavelets by utilizing 1) a Perceptual Error Metric (PoI) for automatically computing the best resolution of graphics content for a given mobile display to eliminate guesswork and save resources, 2) Unequal Error Protection (UEP) to improve the resilience to wireless errors, 3) an Energy-efficient Adaptive Real-time Rendering (EARR) heuristic to balance energy consumption, rendering speed and image quality and 4) an Energy-efficient Streaming Technique. The results facilitate a new class of mobile graphics application which can gracefully adapt the lowest acceptable rendering resolution to the wireless network conditions and the availability of resources and battery energy on mobile device adaptively
