    Adaptive Sliding Mode Control for a Double Fed Induction Generator Used in an Oscillating Water Column System

    Wave power conversion systems are nonlinear dynamical systems that must endure strong uncertainties. Efficiency is a key issue for these systems, and the application of robust control algorithms can improve it considerably. Wave power generation plants are typically built using variable speed generators, such as the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). These generators, compared with fixed speed generators, are very versatile since the turbine speed may be adjusted to improve the efficiency of the whole system. Nevertheless, a suitable speed controller is required for these systems, which must be able to avoid the stalling phenomenon and track the optimal reference for the turbine. This paper proposes a sliding mode control scheme aimed at oscillating water column (OWC) generation plants using Wells turbines and DFIGs. The contributions of the paper are (1) an adaptive sliding mode control scheme that does not require calculating the bounds of the system uncertainties, (2) a Lyapunov analysis of stability for the control algorithm against system uncertainties and disturbances, and (3) a validation of the proposed control scheme through several simulation examples with the Matlab/Simulink suite. The performance results, obtained by means of simulations, for a wave power generation plant (1) evidence that this control scheme improves the power generation of the system and (2) prove that this control scheme is robust in the presence of disturbances.This research was partially funded by the Basque Government through the project ETORTEK KK-2017/00033 and by the UPV/EHU through the project PPGA18/04

    Development of Robust Control Strategies for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

    The resources of the energy and chemical balance in the ocean sustain mankind in many ways. Therefore, ocean exploration is an essential task that is accomplished by deploying Underwater Vehicles. An Underwater Vehicle with autonomy feature for its navigation and control is called Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). Among the task handled by an AUV, accurately positioning itself at a desired position with respect to the reference objects is called set-point control. Similarly, tracking of the reference trajectory is also another important task. Battery recharging of AUV, positioning with respect to underwater structure, cable, seabed, tracking of reference trajectory with desired accuracy and speed to avoid collision with the guiding vehicle in the last phase of docking are some significant applications where an AUV needs to perform the above tasks. Parametric uncertainties in AUV dynamics and actuator torque limitation necessitate to design robust control algorithms to achieve motion control objectives in the face of uncertainties. Sliding Mode Controller (SMC), H / μ synthesis, model based PID group controllers are some of the robust controllers which have been applied to AUV. But SMC suffers from less efficient tuning of its switching gains due to model parameters and noisy estimated acceleration states appearing in its control law. In addition, demand of high control effort due to high frequency chattering is another drawback of SMC. Furthermore, real-time implementation of H / μ synthesis controller based on its stability study is restricted due to use of linearly approximated dynamic model of an AUV, which hinders achieving robustness. Moreover, model based PID group controllers suffer from implementation complexities and exhibit poor transient and steady-state performances under parametric uncertainties. On the other hand model free Linear PID (LPID) has inherent problem of narrow convergence region, i.e.it can not ensure convergence of large initial error to zero. Additionally, it suffers from integrator-wind-up and subsequent saturation of actuator during the occurrence of large initial error. But LPID controller has inherent capability to cope up with the uncertainties. In view of addressing the above said problem, this work proposes wind-up free Nonlinear PID with Bounded Integral (BI) and Bounded Derivative (BD) for set-point control and combination of continuous SMC with Nonlinear PID with BI and BD namely SM-N-PID with BI and BD for trajectory tracking. Nonlinear functions are used for all P,I and D controllers (for both of set-point and tracking control) in addition to use of nonlinear tan hyperbolic function in SMC(for tracking only) such that torque demand from the controller can be kept within a limit. A direct Lyapunov analysis is pursued to prove stable motion of AUV. The efficacies of the proposed controllers are compared with other two controllers namely PD and N-PID without BI and BD for set-point control and PD plus Feedforward Compensation (FC) and SM-NPID without BI and BD for tracking control. Multiple AUVs cooperatively performing a mission offers several advantages over a single AUV in a non-cooperative manner; such as reliability and increased work efficiency, etc. Bandwidth limitation in acoustic medium possess challenges in designing cooperative motion control algorithm for multiple AUVs owing to the necessity of communication of sensors and actuator signals among AUVs. In literature, undirected graph based approach is used for control design under communication constraints and thus it is not suitable for large number of AUVs participating in a cooperative motion plan. Formation control is a popular cooperative motion control paradigm. This thesis models the formation as a minimally persistent directed graph and proposes control schemes for maintaining the distance constraints during the course of motion of entire formation. For formation control each AUV uses Sliding Mode Nonlinear PID controller with Bounded Integrator and Bounded Derivative. Direct Lyapunov stability analysis in the framework of input-to-state stability ensures the stable motion of formation while maintaining the desired distance constraints among the AUVs

    Nonlinear control and perturbation compensation in UAV quadrotor

    The great interest in the field of flying robotics encouraged a lot of research work to improve its control strategies. This thesis is about modelling and design of controllers and perturbation compensators for a UAV quadrotor. Four approaches are built in this purpose. The first approach is perturbation attenuation system in a UAV quadrotor. Hierarchical Perturbation Compensator (HPC) is built to compensate for system uncertainties, non-modelled dynamics and external disturbances. It comprises three subsystems designed to provide continuous and precise estimation of perturbation. Each subsystem is designed to avoid the drawbacks of the other. This approach has superior proficiency to decrease unknown perturbation either external or internal. The second approach is a Three Loop Uncertainties Compensator (TLUC), designed to estimate unknown time- varying uncertainties and perturbations to reduce their effects and in order to preserve stability. The novelty of this approach is that the TLUC can estimate and compensate for uncertainties and disturbances in three loops made to provide tracking to residual uncertainty in order to achieve a higher level of support to the controller. Exponential reaching law sliding mode controller is proposed and applied. It is integrated based on Lyapunov stability theory to obtain fast response with lowest possible chattering. The performance is verified through analyses, simulations and experiments. The third approach is Feedback Linearization based on Sliding Mode Control (FLSMC). The purpose is to provide nonlinear control that reduces the effect of the highly coupled dynamic behavior and the hard nonlinearity in the quadrotor. The proposed controller uses a Second Order sliding mode Exact Differentiator SOED to estimate the velocity and the acceleration. The fourth approach proposes an improved Non-Singular Terminal Super-Twisting Control for the problem of position and attitude tracking of quadrotor systems. The super-twisting algorithm is an effective control used to provide high precision and less chattering. The proposed method is based on a non-singular terminal sliding surface with new exponent that solves the problem of singularity in terminal sliding mode control. Design procedure and the stability analysis using Lyapunov theory are detailed for the considered approaches. The performance is verified through analyses, simulations and experiments

Los procesos industriales comenzaron a demandar precisión en el rango de nanómetros a micrómetros. Pese a que los actuadores convencionales no pueden reducirse lo suficiente ni lograr tal exactitud, los actuadores piezoeléctricos son una tecnología innovadora en este campo y su rendimiento aún está en estudio en la comunidad científica. Los actuadores piezoeléctricos se usan comúnmente en micro y nanomecatrónica para aplicaciones de posicionamiento debido a su alta resolución y fuerza de actuación (pueden llegar a soportar fuerzas de hasta 100 Newtons) en comparación con su tamaño. Todas estas características también se pueden combinar con una actuación rápida y rigidez, según los requisitos de la aplicación. Por lo tanto, con estas características, los actuadores piezoeléctricos pueden ser utilizados en una amplia variedad de aplicaciones industriales. Los efectos negativos, como la fluencia, vibraciones y la histéresis, se estudian comúnmente para mejorar el rendimiento cuando se requiere una alta precisión. Uno de los efectos que más reduce el rendimiento de los PEA es la histéresis. Esto se produce especialmente cuando el actuador está en una aplicación de guiado, por lo que la histéresis puede inducir errores que pueden alcanzar un valor de hasta 22%. Este fenómeno no lineal se puede definir como un efecto generado por la combinación de acciones mecánicas y eléctricas que depende de estados previos. La histéresis se puede reducir principalmente mediante dos estrategias: rediseño de materiales o algoritmos de control tipo feedback. El rediseño de material comprende varias desventajas por lo que el motivo principal de esta tesis está enfocado al diseño de algoritmos de control para reducir la histéresis.     Spacecraft nonlinear attitude control with bounded control input

    The research in this thesis deals with nonlinear control of spacecraft attitude stabilization and tracking manoeuvres and addresses the issue of control toque saturation on a priori basis. The cascaded structure of spacecraft attitude kinematics and dynamics makes the method of integrator backstepping preferred scheme for the spacecraft nonlinear attitude control. However, the conventional backstepping control design method may result in excessive control torque beyond the saturation bound of the actuators. While remaining within the framework of conventional backstepping control design, the present work proposes the formulation of analytical bounds for the control torque components as functions of the initial attitude and angular velocity errors and the gains involved in the control design procedure. The said analytical bounds have been shown to be useful for tuning the gains in a way that the guaranteed maximum torque upper bound lies within the capability of the actuator and, hence, addressing the issue of control input saturation. Conditions have also been developed as well as the generalization of the said analytical bounds which allow for the tuning of the control gains to guarantee prescribed stability with the additional aim that the control action avoids reaching saturation while anticipating the presence of bounded external disturbance torque and uncertainties in the spacecraft moments of inertia. Moreover, the work has also been extended blending it with the artificial potential function method for achieving autonomous capability of avoiding pointing constraints for the case of spacecraft large angle slew manoeuvres. The idea of undergoing such manoeuvres using control moment gyros to track commanded angular momentum rather than a torque command has also been studied. In this context, a gimbal position command generation algorithm has been proposed for a pyramid-type cluster of four single gimbal control moment gyros. The proposed algorithm not only avoids the saturation of the angular momentum input from the control moment gyro cluster but also exploits its maximum value deliverable by the cluster along the direction of the commanded angular momentum for the major part of the manoeuvre. In this way, it results in rapid spacecraft slew manoeuvres. The ideas proposed in the thesis have also been validated using numerical simulations and compared with results already existing in the literature

    Robust and Cooperative Formation Control of Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems

    Compared with the conventional approach of controlling autonomous systems individually, building up a cooperative multi-agent structure is more robust and efficient for both research and industrial purposes. Among the many subbranches of multiagent systems, formation control has been a popular research direction due to its close connection with complex missions such as spacecraft clustering and intelligent transportation. Hence, this thesis focuses on providing new robust formation control algorithms for first-order, second-order and mixed-order nonlinear multi-agent systems to construct and maintain stable system structure in practical scenarios. System uncertainties and external disturbances are commonly seen factors that could negatively affect the formation tracking precision. Among the many popular tools of uncertainty estimation, the implementation of approaches including neural network adaptive estimation and observer-based approximation are discussed in this thesis. Regarding the neural-based approximation process, different neural network structures including Chebyshev neural network, radial basis function neural network, twolayer artificial neural network and three-layer artificial neural network are tested and implemented. The merits and drawbacks of each network design in the field of control is then analysed. Apart from that, this thesis also offers detailed comparison between the cooperative tuning approach and the observer-based tuning approach regarding the neural network structure to find their corresponding applicable scenarios. To ensure the safety of the formation control algorithms, the issues of obstacle avoidance and inter-agent collision avoidance are both considered. Although the method of constructing artificial potential fields is a popular approach in both the field of path planning and motion control, few have discussed the effect of the inter-agent communication on the collision avoidance scheme. For the obstacle avoiding scenarios, the passive correcting behaviour of individual agent is defined and investigated. A new algorithm is then introduced to modify the reference of individual agents to act as the mitigation. The issue of insufficient information accessibility is then discussed for multi-agent systems with a static and uncompleted communication topology. A distance-based communication topology is proposed to create necessary information exchange channel for unconnected agent pairs that are close enough. The actuator saturation issue is also considered for both first-order multi-agent systems and second-order multi-agent systems to increase the practicality of the formation control schemes. Apart from restricting the amplitudes of the control input, the effect of the input coupling phenomenon is investigated. The oscillation of states brought by the coupled and saturated control input is then summarised as the reverse effect. To attenuate the state oscillation, the methods of developing control input regulation algorithms and employing auxiliary compensator are discussed and validated. The last technical problem to discuss is the hierarchical control scheme. The issue of how to decouple the inter-agent communication and the motion dynamics is discussed for both unified-order and mixed-order multi-agent systems. By using a hierarchical formation control structure, the inter-agent communication process is considered based on a group of virtual agents with ideal characteristics, which can significantly reduce the complexity of the system design.
