    Increasing Off-Chip Bandwidth and Mitigating Dark Silicon via Switchable Pins

    Off-chip memory bandwidth has been considered as one of the major limiting factors to processor performance, especially for multi-cores and many-cores. Conventional processor design allocates a large portion of off-chip pins to deliver power, leaving a small number of pins for processor signal communication. We observed that the processor requires much less power than that can be supplied during memory intensive stages in some cases. In this work, we propose a dynamic pin switch technique to alleviate the bandwidth limitation issue. The technique is introduced to dynamically exploit the surplus pins for power delivery in the memory intensive phases and uses them to provide extra bandwidth for the program executions, thus significantly boosting the performance. We also explore its performance benefit in the era of Phase-change memory (PCM) and prove that the technique can be applied beyond DRAM-based memory systems. On the other hand, the end of Dennard Scaling has led to a large amount of inactive or significantly under-clocked transistors on modern chip multi-processors in order to comply with the power budget and prevent the processors from overheating. This so-called “dark silicon” is one of the most critical constraints that will hinder the scaling with Moore’s Law in the future. While advanced cooling techniques, such as liquid cooling, can effectively decrease the chip temperature and alleviate the power constraints; the peak performance, determined by the maximum number of transistors which are allowed to switch simultaneously, is still confined by the amount of power pins on the chip package. In this paper, we propose a novel mechanism to power up the dark silicon by dynamically switching a portion of I/O pins to power pins when off-chip communications are less frequent. By enabling extra cores or increasing processor frequency, the proposed strategy can significantly boost performance compared with traditional designs. Using the switchable pins can increase inter-socket bandwidth as one of performance bottlenecks. Multi-socket computer systems are popular in workstations and servers. However, they suffer from the relatively low bandwidth of inter-socket communication especially for massive parallel workloads that generates many inter-socket requests for synchronizations and remote memory accesses. The inter-socket traffic poses a huge pressure on the underlying networks fully connecting all processors with the limited bandwidth that is confined by pin resources. Given the constraint, we propose to dynamically increase the inter-socket band-width, trading off with lower off-chip memory bandwidth when the systems have heavy inter-socket communication but few off-chip memory accesses.     Techniques of data prefetching, replication, and consistency in the Internet

    Internet has become a major infrastructure for information sharing in our daily life, and indispensable to critical and large applications in industry, government, business, and education. Internet bandwidth (or the network speed to transfer data) has been dramatically increased, however, the latency time (or the delay to physically access data) has been reduced in a much slower pace. The rich bandwidth and lagging latency can be effectively coped with in Internet systems by three data management techniques: caching, replication, and prefetching. The focus of this dissertation is to address the latency problem in Internet by utilizing the rich bandwidth and large storage capacity for efficiently prefetching data to significantly improve the Web content caching performance, by proposing and implementing scalable data consistency maintenance methods to handle Internet Web address caching in distributed name systems (DNS), and to handle massive data replications in peer-to-peer systems. While the DNS service is critical in Internet, peer-to-peer data sharing is being accepted as an important activity in Internet.;We have made three contributions in developing prefetching techniques. First, we have proposed an efficient data structure for maintaining Web access information, called popularity-based Prediction by Partial Matching (PB-PPM), where data are placed and replaced guided by popularity information of Web accesses, thus only important and useful information is stored. PB-PPM greatly reduces the required storage space, and improves the prediction accuracy. Second, a major weakness in existing Web servers is that prefetching activities are scheduled independently of dynamically changing server workloads. Without a proper control and coordination between the two kinds of activities, prefetching can negatively affect the Web services and degrade the Web access performance. to address this problem, we have developed a queuing model to characterize the interactions. Guided by the model, we have designed a coordination scheme that dynamically adjusts the prefetching aggressiveness in Web Servers. This scheme not only prevents the Web servers from being overloaded, but it can also minimize the average server response time. Finally, we have proposed a scheme that effectively coordinates the sharing of access information for both proxy and Web servers. With the support of this scheme, the accuracy of prefetching decisions is significantly improved.;Regarding data consistency support for Internet caching and data replications, we have conducted three significant studies. First, we have developed a consistency support technique to maintain the data consistency among the replicas in structured P2P networks. Based on Pastry, an existing and popular P2P system, we have implemented this scheme, and show that it can effectively maintain consistency while prevent hot-spot and node-failure problems. Second, we have designed and implemented a DNS cache update protocol, called DNScup, to provide strong consistency for domain/IP mappings. Finally, we have developed a dynamic lease scheme to timely update the replicas in Internet

    Dynamic Hardware Resource Management for Efficient Throughput Processing.

    High performance computing is evolving at a rapid pace, with throughput oriented processors such as graphics processing units (GPUs), substituting for traditional processors as the computational workhorse. Their adoption has seen a tremendous increase as they provide high peak performance and energy efficiency while maintaining a friendly programming interface. Furthermore, many existing desktop, laptop, tablet, and smartphone systems support accelerating non-graphics, data parallel workloads on their GPUs. However, the multitude of systems that use GPUs as an accelerator run different genres of data parallel applications, which have significantly contrasting runtime characteristics. GPUs use thousands of identical threads to efficiently exploit the on-chip hardware resources. Therefore, if one thread uses a resource (compute, bandwidth, data cache) more heavily, there will be significant contention for that resource. This contention will eventually saturate the performance of the GPU due to contention for the bottleneck resource,leaving other resources underutilized at the same time. Traditional policies of managing the massive hardware resources work adequately, on well designed traditional scientific style applications. However, these static policies, which are oblivious to the application’s resource requirement, are not efficient for the large spectrum of data parallel workloads with varying resource requirements. Therefore, several standard hardware policies such as using maximum concurrency, fixed operational frequency and round-robin style scheduling are not efficient for modern GPU applications. This thesis defines dynamic hardware resource management mechanisms which improve the efficiency of the GPU by regulating the hardware resources at runtime. The first step in successfully achieving this goal is to make the hardware aware of the application’s characteristics at runtime through novel counters and indicators. After this detection, dynamic hardware modulation provides opportunities for increased performance, improved energy consumption, or both, leading to efficient execution. The key mechanisms for modulating the hardware at runtime are dynamic frequency regulation, managing the amount of concurrency, managing the order of execution among different threads and increasing cache utilization.     Memory Systems and Interconnects for Scale-Out Servers

    The information revolution of the last decade has been fueled by the digitization of almost all human activities through a wide range of Internet services. The backbone of this information age are scale-out datacenters that need to collect, store, and process massive amounts of data. These datacenters distribute vast datasets across a large number of servers, typically into memory-resident shards so as to maintain strict quality-of-service guarantees. While data is driving the skyrocketing demands for scale-out servers, processor and memory manufacturers have reached fundamental efficiency limits, no longer able to increase server energy efficiency at a sufficient pace. As a result, energy has emerged as the main obstacle to the scalability of information technology (IT) with huge economic implications. Delivering sustainable IT calls for a paradigm shift in computer system design. As memory has taken a central role in IT infrastructure, memory-centric architectures are required to fully utilize the IT's costly memory investment. In response, processor architects are resorting to manycore architectures to leverage the abundant request-level parallelism found in data-centric applications. Manycore processors fully utilize available memory resources, thereby increasing IT efficiency by almost an order of magnitude. Because manycore server chips execute a large number of concurrent requests, they exhibit high incidence of accesses to the last-level-cache for fetching instructions (due to large instruction footprints), and off-chip memory (due to lack of temporal reuse in on-chip caches) for accessing dataset objects. As a result, on-chip interconnects and the memory system are emerging as major performance and energy-efficiency bottlenecks in servers. This thesis seeks to architect on-chip interconnects and memory systems that are tuned for the requirements of memory-centric scale-out servers. By studying a wide range of data-centric applications, we uncover application phenomena common in data-centric applications, and examine their implications on on-chip network and off-chip memory traffic. Finally, we propose specialized on-chip interconnects and memory systems that leverage common traffic characteristics, thereby improving server throughput and energy efficiency

This memory bottleneck has been exacerbated in the past few years with (1) architectural innovations for improving the efficiency of computation units (e.g., chip multiprocessors), which shift the major cause of inefficiency from processors to memory, and (2) the emergence of data-intensive applications, which demands a large capacity of main memory and an excessive amount of memory bandwidth to efficiently handle such workloads. In order to address this memory wall challenge, this dissertation aims at exploring the potential of emerging memory technologies and designing a high-performance, energy-efficient memory hierarchy that is aware of and leverages the characteristics of such new memory technologies. The first part of this dissertation focuses on energy-efficient on-chip cache design based on a new non-volatile memory technology called Spin-Transfer Torque RAM (STT-RAM). When STT-RAM is used to build on-chip caches, it provides several advantages over conventional charge-based memory (e.g., SRAM or eDRAM), such as non-volatility, lower static power, and higher density. However, simply replacing SRAM caches with STT-RAM rather increases the energy consumption because write operations of STT-RAM are slower and more energy-consuming than those of SRAM. To address this challenge, we propose four novel architectural techniques that can alleviate the impact of inefficient STT-RAM write operations on system performance and energy consumption. First, we apply STT-RAM to instruction caches (where write operations are relatively infrequent) and devise a power-gating mechanism called LASIC, which leverages the non-volatility of STT-RAM to turn off STT-RAM instruction caches inside small loops. Second, we propose lower-bits cache, which exploits the narrow bit-width characteristics of application data by caching frequent bit-flips at lower bits in a small SRAM cache. Third, we present prediction hybrid cache, an SRAM/STT-RAM hybrid cache whose block placement between SRAM and STT-RAM is determined by predicting the write intensity of each cache block with a new hardware structure called write intensity predictor. Fourth, we propose DASCA, which predicts write operations that can bypass the cache without incurring extra cache misses (called dead writes) and lets the last-level cache bypass such dead writes to reduce write energy consumption. The second part of this dissertation architects intelligent main memory and its host architecture support based on logic-enabled DRAM. Traditionally, main memory has served the sole purpose of storing data because the extra manufacturing cost of implementing rich functionality (e.g., computation) on a DRAM die was unacceptably high. However, the advent of 3D die stacking now provides a practical, cost-effective way to integrate complex logic circuits into main memory, thereby opening up the possibilities for intelligent main memory. For example, it can be utilized to implement advanced memory management features (e.g., scheduling, power management, etc.) inside memoryit can be also used to offload computation to main memory, which allows us to overcome the memory bandwidth bottleneck caused by narrow off-chip channels (commonly known as processing-in-memory or PIM). The remaining questions are what to implement inside main memory and how to integrate and expose such new features to existing systems. In order to answer these questions, we propose four system designs that utilize logic-enabled DRAM to improve system performance and energy efficiency. First, we utilize the existing logic layer of a Hybrid Memory Cube (a commercial logic-enabled DRAM product) to (1) dynamically turn off some of its off-chip links by monitoring the actual bandwidth demand and (2) integrate prefetch buffer into main memory to perform aggressive prefetching without consuming off-chip link bandwidth. Second, we propose a scalable accelerator for large-scale graph processing called Tesseract, in which graph processing computation is offloaded to specialized processors inside main memory in order to achieve memory-capacity-proportional performance. Third, we design a low-overhead PIM architecture for near-term adoption called PIM-enabled instructions, where PIM operations are interfaced as cache-coherent, virtually-addressed host processor instructions that can be executed either by the host processor or in main memory depending on the data locality. Fourth, we propose an energy-efficient PIM system called aggregation-in-memory, which can adaptively execute PIM operations at any level of the memory hierarchy and provides a fully automated compiler     Energy-efficient mobile GPU systems

    The design of mobile GPUs is all about saving energy. Smartphones and tablets are battery-operated and thus any type of rendering needs to use as little energy as possible. Furthermore, smartphones do not include sophisticated cooling systems due to their small size, making heat dissipation a primary concern. Improving the energy-efficiency of mobile GPUs will be absolutely necessary to achieve the performance required to satisfy consumer expectations, while maintaining operating time per battery charge and keeping the GPU in its thermal limits. The first step in optimizing energy consumption is to identify the sources of energy drain. Previous studies have demonstrated that the register file is one of the main sources of energy consumption in a GPU. As graphics workloads are highly data- and memory-parallel, GPUs rely on massive multithreading to hide the memory latency and keep the functional units busy. However, aggressive multithreading requires a huge register file to keep the registers of thousands of simultaneous threads. Such a big register file exceeds the power budget typically available for an embedded graphics processors and, hence, more energy-efficient memory latency tolerance techniques are necessary. On the other hand, prior research showed that the off-chip accesses to system memory are one of the most expensive operations in terms of energy in a mobile GPU. Therefore, optimizing memory bandwidth usage is a primary concern in mobile GPU design. Many bandwidth saving techniques, such as texture compression or ARM's transaction elimination, have been proposed in both industry and academia. The purpose of this thesis is to study the characteristics of mobile graphics processors and mobile workloads in order to propose different energy saving techniques specifically tailored for the low-power segment. Firstly, we focus on energy-efficient memory latency tolerance. We analyze several techniques such as multithreading and prefetching and conclude that they are effective but not energy-efficient. Next, we propose an architecture for the fragment processors of a mobile GPU that is based on the decoupled access/execute paradigm. The results obtained by using a cycle-accurate mobile GPU simulator and several commercial Android games show that the decoupled architecture combined with a small degree of multithreading provides the most energy efficient solution for hiding memory latency. More specifically, the decoupled access/execute-like design with just 4 SIMD threads/processor is able to achieve 97% of the performance of a larger GPU with 16 SIMD threads/processor, while providing 20.5% energy savings on average. Secondly, we focus on optimizing memory bandwidth in a mobile GPU. We analyze the bandwidth usage in a set of commercial Android games and find that most of the bandwidth is employed for fetching textures, and also that consecutive frames share most of the texture dataset as they tend to be very similar. However, the GPU cannot capture inter-frame texture re-use due to the big size of the texture dataset for one frame. Based on this analysis, we propose Parallel Frame Rendering (PFR), a technique that overlaps the processing of multiple frames in order to exploit inter-frame texture re-use and save bandwidth. By processing multiple frames in parallel textures are fetched once every two frames instead of being fetched in a frame basis as in conventional GPUs. PFR provides 23.8% memory bandwidth savings on average in our set of Android games, that result in 12% speedup and 20.1% energy savings. Finally, we improve PFR by introducing a hardware memoization system on top. We analyze the redundancy in mobile games and find that more than 38% of the Fragment Program executions are redundant on average. We thus propose a task-level hardware-based memoization system that provides 15% speedup and 12% energy savings on average over a PFR-enabled GPU.El diseño de las GPUs (Graphics Procesing Units) móviles se centra fundamentalmente en el ahorro energético. Mejorar la eficiencia energética de las GPUs móviles será absolutamente necesario para alcanzar el rendimiento requirido para satisfacer las expectativas de los usuarios, sin reducir el tiempo de vida de la batería. El primer paso para optimizar el consumo energético consiste en identificar qué componentes son los principales consumidores de la batería. Estudios anteriores han identificado al banco de registros y a los accessos a memoria principal como las mayores fuentes de consumo energético en una GPU. El propósito de esta tesis es estudiar las características de los procesadores gráficos móviles y de las aplicaciones móviles con el objetivo de proponer distintas técnicas de ahorro energético. En primer lugar, la investigación se centra en desarrollar métodos energéticamente eficientes para ocultar la latencia de la memoria principal. El resultado de la investigación es una arquitectura desacoplada para los Fragment Processors de la GPU. Los resultados experimentales utilizando un simulador de ciclo y distintos juegos de Android muestran que una arquitectura desacoplada, combinada con un nivel de multithreading moderado, proporciona la solución más eficiente desde el punto de vista energético para ocultar la latencia de la memoria prinicipal. Más específicamente, la arquitectura desacoplada con sólo 4 SIMD threads/processor es capaz de alcanzar el 97% del rendimiento de una GPU más grande con 16 SIMD threads/processor, al tiempo que se reduce el consumo energético en un 20.5%. En segundo lugar, el trabajo de investigación se centró en optimizar el ancho de banda en una GPU móvil. Se realizó un estudio del uso del ancho de banda en distintos juegos de Android y se observó que la mayor parte del ancho de banda se utiliza para leer texturas. Además, se observó que frames consecutivos comparten una gran parte de las texturas. Sin embargo, la GPU no puede capturar el reuso de texturas entre frames dado que el tamaño de las texturas utilizadas por un frame es mucho mayor que la caché de segundo nivel. Basándose en este análisis, se desarrolló Parallel Frame Rendering (PFR), una técnica que solapa el procesado de multiples frames consecutivos con el objetivo de explotar el reuso de texturas entre frames y ahorrar así ancho de bando. Al procesar múltiples frames en paralelo las texturas se leen de memoria principal una vez cada dos frames en lugar de leerse en cada frame como sucede en una GPU convencional. PFR proporciona un ahorro del 23.8% en ancho de banda en promedio para distintos juegos de Android, este ahorro de ancho de banda redunda en un incremento del rendimiento del 12% y un ahorro energético del 20.1%. Por último, se mejoró PFR introduciendo un sistema hardware capaz de evitar cómputos redundantes. Un análisis de distintos juegos de Android reveló que más de un 38% de las ejecuciones del Fragment Program eran redundantes en promedio. Así pues, se propuso un sistema hardware capaz de identificar y eliminar parte de los cómputos y accessos a memoria redundantes, dicho sistema proporciona un incremento del rendimiento del 15% y un ahorro energético del 12% en promedio con respecto a una GPU móvil basada en PFR
