    Robust Adaptive Control of Linear Parameter-Varying Systems with Unmatched Uncertainties

    This paper presents a robust adaptive control solution for linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems with unknown input gain and unmatched nonlinear (state- and time-dependent) uncertainties based on the L1\mathcal{L}_1 adaptive control architecture and peak-to-peak gain (PPG) analysis/minimization from robust control. Specifically, we introduce new tools for stability and performance analysis leveraging the PPG bound of an LPV system that is computable using linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques. A piecewise-constant estimation law is introduced to estimate the lumped uncertainty with quantifiable error bounds, which can be systematically improved by reducing the estimation sampling time. We also present a new approach to attenuate the unmatched uncertainty based on the PPG minimization that is applicable to a broad class of systems with linear nominal dynamics. In addition, we derive transient and steady-state performance bounds in terms of the input and output signals of the actual closed-loop system as compared to the same signals of a virtual reference system that represents the possibly best achievable performance. Under mild assumptions, we prove that the transient performance bounds can be uniformly reduced by decreasing the estimation sampling time, which is subject only to hardware limitations. The theoretical development is validated by extensive simulations on the short-period dynamics of an F-16 aircraft

    Adaptive output feedback control of aircraft flexible modes

    The application of adaptive output feedback augmentative control to the flexible aircraft problem is presented. Experimental validation of control scheme was carried out using a three disk torsional pendulum. In the reference model adaptive control scheme, the rigid aircraft reference model and neural network adaptation is used to control structural flexible modes and compensate for the effects unmodeled dynamics and parametric variations of a classical high order large passenger aircraft. The attenuation of specific low and high frequency flexible mode depending on linear controller design specifications and adaptation parameters were observed. The effectiveness of the approach was seen in flexibility control of the high dimensional, nonminimum phase, nonlinear aircraft model with parametric uncertainties of wind and unmodeled dynamics of actuators and sensors

    Robust nonlinear generalised predictive control for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems via an integral sliding mode approach

    In this paper, a robust nonlinear generalised predictive control (GPC) method is proposed by combining an integral sliding mode approach. The composite controller can guarantee zero steady-state error for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems in the presence of both matched and unmatched disturbances. Indeed, it is well known that the traditional GPC based on Taylor series expansion cannot completely reject unknown disturbance and achieve offset-free tracking performance. To deal with this problem, the existing approaches are enhanced by avoiding the use of the disturbance observer and modifying the gain function of the nonlinear integral sliding surface. This modified strategy appears to be more capable of achieving both the disturbance rejection and the nominal prescribed specifications for matched disturbance. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach

    Adaptive IDA-PBC for underactuated mechanical systems with constant disturbances

    This work investigates the control of nonlinear underactuated mechanical systems with matched and unmatched constant disturbances. To this end, a new control strategy is proposed, which builds upon the interconnection‐and‐damping‐assignment passivity‐based control, augmenting it with an additional term for the purpose of disturbance compensation. In particular, the disturbances are estimated adaptively and then accounted for in the control law employing a new matching condition of algebraic nature. Stability conditions are discussed, and for comparison purposes, an alternative controller based on partial feedback linearization is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated with numerical simulations for three motivating examples: the inertia wheel pendulum, the disk‐on‐disk system, and the pendulum‐on‐cart system

    Nonlinear Backstepping Control Design for Coupled Nonlinear Systems under External Disturbances

    A nonlinear backstepping control is proposed for the coupled normal form of nonlinear systems. The proposed method is designed by combining the sliding-mode control and backstepping control with a disturbance observer (DOB). The key idea behind the proposed method is that the linear terms of state variables of the second subsystem are lumped into the virtual input in the first subsystem. A DOB is developed to estimate the external disturbances. Auxiliary state variables are used to avoid amplification of the measurement noise in the DOB. For output tracking and unmatched disturbance cancellation in the first subsystem, the desired virtual input is derived via the backstepping procedure. The actual input in the second subsystem is developed to guarantee the convergence of the virtual input to the desired virtual input by using a sliding-mode control. The stability of the closed-loop is verified by using the input-to-state stable (ISS) property.     Input-Shaped Model Reference Control Using Sliding Mode Design for Sway Suppression of An Industrial Overhead Crane

    Input-shaped model reference control using sliding mode design is a proven method for controlling systems with parameter variations and disturbance. However, this method has never been reported for an industrial overhead crane, which is operated under nonlinear elements such as acceleration and deceleration limits caused by inverters for driving a crane in speed control mode. The successful implementation of this method will allow the crane to be operated in “hybrid mode”, which results in the fastest response from the feedforward control technique, unity magnitude zero vibration (UMZV) and tracking performance from the feedback control. This paper shows the implementation and experimental result of the input-shaped model reference control using sliding mode design for sway suppression of an industrial overhead crane. The control scheme was implemented on an industrial grade 1-ton overhead crane using a PLC and inverters. The experiments compared the control results of the UMZV and the presented control scheme on the industrial overhead crane in the cases that the system parameters are known and uncertain. When the parameters are uncertain, the presented method, with the feedback elements, provided the advantage of reducing residual vibration, while keeping the benefits of the UMZV performance
