Similarity Decomposition Approach to Oscillatory Synchronization for Multiple Mechanical Systems With a Virtual Leader
This paper addresses the oscillatory synchronization problem for multiple
uncertain mechanical systems with a virtual leader, and the interaction
topology among them is assumed to contain a directed spanning tree. We propose
an adaptive control scheme to achieve the goal of oscillatory synchronization.
Using the similarity decomposition approach, we show that the position and
velocity synchronization errors between each mechanical system (or follower)
and the virtual leader converge to zero. The performance of the proposed

Model estimation of cerebral hemodynamics between blood flow and volume changes: a data-based modeling approach
It is well known that there is a dynamic relationship between cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral blood volume (CBV). With increasing applications of functional MRI, where the blood oxygen-level-dependent signals are recorded, the understanding and accurate modeling of the hemodynamic relationship between CBF and CBV becomes increasingly important. This study presents an empirical and data-based modeling framework for model identification from CBF and CBV experimental data. It is shown that the relationship between the changes in CBF and CBV can be described using a parsimonious autoregressive with exogenous input model structure. It is observed that neither the ordinary least-squares (LS) method nor the classical total least-squares (TLS) method can produce accurate estimates from the original noisy CBF and CBV data. A regularized total least-squares (RTLS) method is thus introduced and extended to solve such an error-in-the-variables problem. Quantitative results show that the RTLS method works very well on the noisy CBF and CBV data. Finally, a combination of RTLS with a filtering method can lead to a parsimonious but very effective model that can characterize the relationship between the changes in CBF and CBV
Issues in the design of switched linear systems : a benchmark study
In this paper we present a tutorial overview of some of the issues that arise in the design of switched linear control systems. Particular emphasis is given to issues relating to stability and control system realisation. A benchmark regulation problem is then presented. This problem is most naturally solved by means of a switched control design. The challenge to the community is to design a control system that meets the required performance specifications and permits the application of rigorous analysis techniques. A simple design solution is presented and the limitations of currently available analysis techniques are illustrated with reference to this example
A Characterization of Scale Invariant Responses in Enzymatic Networks
An ubiquitous property of biological sensory systems is adaptation: a step
increase in stimulus triggers an initial change in a biochemical or
physiological response, followed by a more gradual relaxation toward a basal,
pre-stimulus level. Adaptation helps maintain essential variables within
acceptable bounds and allows organisms to readjust themselves to an optimum and
non-saturating sensitivity range when faced with a prolonged change in their
environment. Recently, it was shown theoretically and experimentally that many
adapting systems, both at the organism and single-cell level, enjoy a
remarkable additional feature: scale invariance, meaning that the initial,
transient behavior remains (approximately) the same even when the background
signal level is scaled. In this work, we set out to investigate under what
conditions a broadly used model of biochemical enzymatic networks will exhibit
scale-invariant behavior. An exhaustive computational study led us to discover
a new property of surprising simplicity and generality, uniform linearizations
with fast output (ULFO), whose validity we show is both necessary and
sufficient for scale invariance of enzymatic networks. Based on this study, we
go on to develop a mathematical explanation of how ULFO results in scale
invariance. Our work provides a surprisingly consistent, simple, and general
framework for understanding this phenomenon, and results in concrete
experimental predictions
Neural Networks for Modeling and Control of Particle Accelerators
We describe some of the challenges of particle accelerator control, highlight
recent advances in neural network techniques, discuss some promising avenues
for incorporating neural networks into particle accelerator control systems,
and describe a neural network-based control system that is being developed for
resonance control of an RF electron gun at the Fermilab Accelerator Science and
Technology (FAST) facility, including initial experimental results from a

Active sensor fault tolerant output feedback tracking control for wind turbine systems via T-S model
This paper presents a new approach to active sensor fault tolerant tracking control (FTTC) for offshore wind turbine (OWT) described via Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) multiple models. The FTTC strategy is designed in such way that aims to maintain nominal wind turbine controller without any change in both fault and fault-free cases. This is achieved by inserting T–S proportional state estimators augmented with proportional and integral feedback (PPI) fault estimators to be capable to estimate different generators and rotor speed sensors fault for compensation purposes. Due to the dependency of the FTTC strategy on the fault estimation the designed observer has the capability to estimate a wide range of time varying fault signals. Moreover, the robustness of the observer against the difference between the anemometer wind speed measurement and the immeasurable effective wind speed signal has been taken into account. The corrected measurements fed to a T–S fuzzy dynamic output feedback controller (TSDOFC) designed to track the desired trajectory. The stability proof with H∞ performance and D-stability constraints is formulated as a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) problem. Intrinsic gain modulation and adaptive neural coding
In many cases, the computation of a neural system can be reduced to a
receptive field, or a set of linear filters, and a thresholding function, or
gain curve, which determines the firing probability; this is known as a
linear/nonlinear model. In some forms of sensory adaptation, these linear
filters and gain curve adjust very rapidly to changes in the variance of a
randomly varying driving input. An apparently similar but previously unrelated
issue is the observation of gain control by background noise in cortical
neurons: the slope of the firing rate vs current (f-I) curve changes with the
variance of background random input. Here, we show a direct correspondence
between these two observations by relating variance-dependent changes in the
gain of f-I curves to characteristics of the changing empirical
linear/nonlinear model obtained by sampling. In the case that the underlying
system is fixed, we derive relationships relating the change of the gain with
respect to both mean and variance with the receptive fields derived from
reverse correlation on a white noise stimulus. Using two conductance-based
model neurons that display distinct gain modulation properties through a simple
change in parameters, we show that coding properties of both these models
quantitatively satisfy the predicted relationships. Our results describe how
both variance-dependent gain modulation and adaptive neural computation result
