    An Online Sparse Streaming Feature Selection Algorithm

    Online streaming feature selection (OSFS), which conducts feature selection in an online manner, plays an important role in dealing with high-dimensional data. In many real applications such as intelligent healthcare platform, streaming feature always has some missing data, which raises a crucial challenge in conducting OSFS, i.e., how to establish the uncertain relationship between sparse streaming features and labels. Unfortunately, existing OSFS algorithms never consider such uncertain relationship. To fill this gap, we in this paper propose an online sparse streaming feature selection with uncertainty (OS2FSU) algorithm. OS2FSU consists of two main parts: 1) latent factor analysis is utilized to pre-estimate the missing data in sparse streaming features before con-ducting feature selection, and 2) fuzzy logic and neighborhood rough set are employed to alleviate the uncertainty between estimated streaming features and labels during conducting feature selection. In the experiments, OS2FSU is compared with five state-of-the-art OSFS algorithms on six real datasets. The results demonstrate that OS2FSU outperforms its competitors when missing data are encountered in OSFS

    Transfer Learning via Contextual Invariants for One-to-Many Cross-Domain Recommendation

    The rapid proliferation of new users and items on the social web has aggravated the gray-sheep user/long-tail item challenge in recommender systems. Historically, cross-domain co-clustering methods have successfully leveraged shared users and items across dense and sparse domains to improve inference quality. However, they rely on shared rating data and cannot scale to multiple sparse target domains (i.e., the one-to-many transfer setting). This, combined with the increasing adoption of neural recommender architectures, motivates us to develop scalable neural layer-transfer approaches for cross-domain learning. Our key intuition is to guide neural collaborative filtering with domain-invariant components shared across the dense and sparse domains, improving the user and item representations learned in the sparse domains. We leverage contextual invariances across domains to develop these shared modules, and demonstrate that with user-item interaction context, we can learn-to-learn informative representation spaces even with sparse interaction data. We show the effectiveness and scalability of our approach on two public datasets and a massive transaction dataset from Visa, a global payments technology company (19% Item Recall, 3x faster vs. training separate models for each domain).     CFMT: a collaborative filtering approach based on the nonnegative matrix factorization technique and trust relationships

    peer reviewedAs a method of information filtering, the Recommender System (RS) has gained considerable popularity because of its efficiency and provision of the most superior numbers of useful items. A recommender system is a proposed solution to the information overload problem in social media and algorithms. Collaborative Filtering (CF) is a practical approach to the recommendation; however, it is characterized by cold start and data sparsity, the most severe barriers against providing accurate recommendations. Rating matrices are finely represented by Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) models, fundamental models in CF-based RSs. However, most NMF methods do not provide reasonable accuracy due to the dispersion of the rating matrix. As a result of the sparsity of data and problems concerning the cold start, information on the trust network among users is further utilized to elevate RS performance. Therefore, this study suggests a novel trust-based matrix factorization technique referred to as CFMT, which uses the social network data in the recommendation process by modeling user’s roles as trustees and trusters, given the trust network’s structural information. The proposed method seeks to lower the sparsity of the data and the cold start problem by integrating information sources including ratings and trust statements into the recommendation model, an attempt by which significant superiority over state-of-the-art approaches is demonstrated an empirical examination of real-world datasets

    Skills-based hiring is a talent management approach that empowers employers to align recruitment around business results, rather than around credentials and title. It starts with employers identifying the particular skills required for a role, and then screening and evaluating candidates’ competencies against those requirements. With the recent rise in employers adopting skills-based hiring practices, it has become integral for students to take courses that improve their marketability and support their long-term career success. A 2017 survey of over 32,000 students at 43 randomly selected institutions found that only 34% of students believe they will graduate with the skills and knowledge required to be successful in the job market. Furthermore, the study found that while 96% of chief academic officers believe that their institutions are very or somewhat effective at preparing students for the workforce, only 11% of business leaders strongly agree [11]. An implication of the misalignment is that college graduates lack the skills that companies need and value. Fortunately, the rise of skills-based hiring provides an opportunity for universities and students to establish and follow clearer classroom-to-career pathways. To this end, this paper presents a course recommender system that aims to improve students’ career readiness by suggesting relevant skills and courses based on their unique career interests
