    Communication system analysis for manned space flight

    One- and two-dimensional adaptive delta modulator (ADM) algorithms are discussed and compared. Results are shown for bit rates of two bits/pixel, one bit/pixel and 0.5 bits/pixel. Pictures showing the difference between the encoded-decoded pictures and the original pictures are presented. The effect of channel errors on the reconstructed picture is illustrated. A two-dimensional ADM using interframe encoding is also presented. This system operates at the rate of two bits/pixel and produces excellent quality pictures when there is little motion. The effect of large amounts of motion on the reconstructed picture is described

    Design of a digital compression technique for shuttle television

    The determination of the performance and hardware complexity of data compression algorithms applicable to color television signals, were studied to assess the feasibility of digital compression techniques for shuttle communications applications. For return link communications, it is shown that a nonadaptive two dimensional DPCM technique compresses the bandwidth of field-sequential color TV to about 13 MBPS and requires less than 60 watts of secondary power. For forward link communications, a facsimile coding technique is recommended which provides high resolution slow scan television on a 144 KBPS channel. The onboard decoder requires about 19 watts of secondary power

    PACMAS: A Personalized, Adaptive, and Cooperative MultiAgent System Architecture

    In this paper, a generic architecture, designed to support the implementation of applications aimed at managing information among different and heterogeneous sources, is presented. Information is filtered and organized according to personal interests explicitly stated by the user. User pro- files are improved and refined throughout time by suitable adaptation techniques. The overall architecture has been called PACMAS, being a support for implementing Personalized, Adaptive, and Cooperative MultiAgent Systems. PACMAS agents are autonomous and flexible, and can be made personal, adaptive and cooperative, depending on the given application. The peculiarities of the architecture are highlighted by illustrating three relevant case studies focused on giving a support to undergraduate and graduate students, on predicting protein secondary structure, and on classifying newspaper articles, respectively

    Subjective Quality Evaluation of H.264 High-Definition Video Coding versus Spatial Up-Scaling and Interlacing

    International audienceThe upcoming High-De nition format for video display provides high-quality content, especially when displayed on adapted devices. When combined with video coding techniques such as MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, the transmission of High-De nition video content on broadcast networks becomes possible. Nonetheless, transmitting and decoding such video content is a real challenge. Therefore, intermediate formats based on lower frame resolutions or interlaced coding are still provided to address targets with limited resources. Using these formats, the nal video quality depends on the postprocessing tools employed at the receiver to upsample and de-interlace these streams. In this paper, we compare the full-HD format to three possible scenarios to generate a full-HD stream from intermediate formats. We present the results of subjective tests that compare the visual quality of each scenario when using the same bitrate. The results show that using the same bitrate, the videos generated from lower-resolution formats reach similar quality compared to the full-HD videos

    An efficient rate control algorithm for a wavelet video codec

    Rate control plays an essential role in video coding and transmission to provide the best video quality at the receiver's end given the constraint of certain network conditions. In this paper, a rate control algorithm using the Quality Factor (QF) optimization method is proposed for the wavelet-based video codec and implemented on an open source Dirac video encoder. A mathematical model which we call Rate-QF (R - QF) model is derived to generate the optimum QF for the current coding frame according to the target bitrate. The proposed algorithm is a complete one pass process and does not require complex mathematical calculation. The process of calculating the QF is quite simple and further calculation is not required for each coded frame. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can control the bitrate precisely (within 1% of target bitrate in average). Moreover, the variation of bitrate over each Group of Pictures (GOPs) is lower than that of H.264. This is an advantage in preventing the buffer overflow and underflow for real-time multimedia data streaming
