    Automated Optical Inspection and Image Analysis of Superconducting Radio-Frequency Cavities

    The inner surface of superconducting cavities plays a crucial role to achieve highest accelerating fields and low losses. For an investigation of this inner surface of more than 100 cavities within the cavity fabrication for the European XFEL and the ILC HiGrade Research Project, an optical inspection robot OBACHT was constructed. To analyze up to 2325 images per cavity, an image processing and analysis code was developed and new variables to describe the cavity surface were obtained. The accuracy of this code is up to 97% and the PPV 99% within the resolution of 15.63 ÎŒm\mu \mathrm{m}. The optical obtained surface roughness is in agreement with standard profilometric methods. The image analysis algorithm identified and quantified vendor specific fabrication properties as the electron beam welding speed and the different surface roughness due to the different chemical treatments. In addition, a correlation of ρ=−0.93\rho = -0.93 with a significance of 6 σ6\,\sigma between an obtained surface variable and the maximal accelerating field was found

    Airborne photogrammetry and LIDAR for DSM extraction and 3D change detection over an urban area : a comparative study

    A digital surface model (DSM) extracted from stereoscopic aerial images, acquired in March 2000, is compared with a DSM derived from airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) data collected in July 2009. Three densely built-up study areas in the city centre of Ghent, Belgium, are selected, each covering approximately 0.4 km(2). The surface models, generated from the two different 3D acquisition methods, are compared qualitatively and quantitatively as to what extent they are suitable in modelling an urban environment, in particular for the 3D reconstruction of buildings. Then the data sets, which are acquired at two different epochs t(1) and t(2), are investigated as to what extent 3D (building) changes can be detected and modelled over the time interval. A difference model, generated by pixel-wise subtracting of both DSMs, indicates changes in elevation. Filters are proposed to differentiate 'real' building changes from false alarms provoked by model noise, outliers, vegetation, etc. A final 3D building change model maps all destructed and newly constructed buildings within the time interval t(2) - t(1). Based on the change model, the surface and volume of the building changes can be quantified

    A comparative study of image processing thresholding algorithms on residual oxide scale detection in stainless steel production lines

    The present work is intended for residual oxide scale detection and classification through the application of image processing techniques. This is a defect that can remain in the surface of stainless steel coils after an incomplete pickling process in a production line. From a previous detailed study over reflectance of residual oxide defect, we present a comparative study of algorithms for image segmentation based on thresholding methods. In particular, two computational models based on multi-linear regression and neural networks will be proposed. A system based on conventional area camera with a special lighting was installed and fully integrated in an annealing and pickling line for model testing purposes.     An Open Source, Autonomous, Vision-Based Algorithm for Hazard Detection and Avoidance for Celestial Body Landing

    Planetary exploration is one of the main goals that humankind has established as a must for space exploration in order to be prepared for colonizing new places and provide scientific data for a better understanding of the formation of our solar system. In order to provide a safe approach, several safety measures must be undertaken to guarantee not only the success of the mission but also the safety of the crew. One of these safety measures is the Autonomous Hazard, Detection, and Avoidance (HDA) sub-system for celestial body landers that will enable different spacecraft to complete solar system exploration. The main objective of the HDA sub-system is to assemble a map of the local terrain during the descent of the spacecraft so that a safe landing site can be marked down. This thesis will be focused on a passive method using a monocular camera as its primary detection sensor due to its form factor and weight, which enables its implementation alongside the proposed HDA algorithm in the Intuitive Machines lunar lander NOVA-C as part of the Commercial Lunar Payload Services technological demonstration in 2021 for the NASA Artemis program to take humans back to the moon. This algorithm is implemented by including two different sources for making decisions, a two-dimensional (2D) vision-based HDA map and a three-dimensional (3D) HDA map obtained through a Structure from Motion process in combination with a plane fitting sequence. These two maps will provide different metrics in order to provide the lander a better probability of performing a safe touchdown. These metrics are processed to optimize a cost function

    Neural network-based colonoscopic diagnosis using on-line learning and differential evolution

    In this paper, on-line training of neural networks is investigated in the context of computer-assisted colonoscopic diagnosis. A memory-based adaptation of the learning rate for the on-line back-propagation (BP) is proposed and used to seed an on-line evolution process that applies a differential evolution (DE) strategy to (re-) adapt the neural network to modified environmental conditions. Our approach looks at on-line training from the perspective of tracking the changing location of an approximate solution of a pattern-based, and thus, dynamically changing, error function. The proposed hybrid strategy is compared with other standard training methods that have traditionally been used for training neural networks off-line. Results in interpreting colonoscopy images and frames of video sequences are promising and suggest that networks trained with this strategy detect malignant regions of interest with accuracy

    Computerized Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Images to Study Cerebral Anatomy in Developing Neonates

    The study of cerebral anatomy in developing neonates is of great importance for the understanding of brain development during the early period of life. This dissertation therefore focuses on three challenges in the modelling of cerebral anatomy in neonates during brain development. The methods that have been developed all use Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) as source data. To facilitate study of vascular development in the neonatal period, a set of image analysis algorithms are developed to automatically extract and model cerebral vessel trees. The whole process consists of cerebral vessel tracking from automatically placed seed points, vessel tree generation, and vasculature registration and matching. These algorithms have been tested on clinical Time-of- Flight (TOF) MR angiographic datasets. To facilitate study of the neonatal cortex a complete cerebral cortex segmentation and reconstruction pipeline has been developed. Segmentation of the neonatal cortex is not effectively done by existing algorithms designed for the adult brain because the contrast between grey and white matter is reversed. This causes pixels containing tissue mixtures to be incorrectly labelled by conventional methods. The neonatal cortical segmentation method that has been developed is based on a novel expectation-maximization (EM) method with explicit correction for mislabelled partial volume voxels. Based on the resulting cortical segmentation, an implicit surface evolution technique is adopted for the reconstruction of the cortex in neonates. The performance of the method is investigated by performing a detailed landmark study. To facilitate study of cortical development, a cortical surface registration algorithm for aligning the cortical surface is developed. The method first inflates extracted cortical surfaces and then performs a non-rigid surface registration using free-form deformations (FFDs) to remove residual alignment. Validation experiments using data labelled by an expert observer demonstrate that the method can capture local changes and follow the growth of specific sulcus

    A Vision-Based Automatic Safe landing-Site Detection System

    An automatic safe landing-site detection system is proposed for aircraft emergency landing, based on visible information acquired by aircraft-mounted cameras. Emergency landing is an unplanned event in response to emergency situations. If, as is unfortunately usually the case, there is no airstrip or airfield that can be reached by the un-powered aircraft, a crash landing or ditching has to be carried out. Identifying a safe landing-site is critical to the survival of passengers and crew. Conventionally, the pilot chooses the landing-site visually by looking at the terrain through the cockpit. The success of this vital decision greatly depends on the external environmental factors that can impair human vision, and on the pilot\u27s flight experience that can vary significantly among pilots. Therefore, we propose a robust, reliable and efficient detection system that is expected to alleviate the negative impact of these factors. In this study, we focus on the detection mechanism of the proposed system and assume that the image enhancement for increased visibility and image stitching for a larger field-of-view have already been performed on terrain images acquired by aircraft-mounted cameras. Specifically, we first propose a hierarchical elastic horizon detection algorithm to identify ground in rile image. Then the terrain image is divided into non-overlapping blocks which are clustered according to a roughness measure. Adjacent smooth blocks are merged to form potential landing-sites whose dimensions are measured with principal component analysis and geometric transformations. If the dimensions of a candidate region exceed the minimum requirement for safe landing, the potential landing-site is considered a safe candidate and highlighted on the human machine interface. At the end, the pilot makes the final decision by confirming one of the candidates, also considering other factors such as wind speed and wind direction, etc

    Automated visual inspection algorithm for the reflection detection and removing in image sequences

    Specular reflections are undesirable phenomena that can impair overall perception and subsequent image analysis. In this paper, we propose a modern solution to this problem, based on the latest achievements in this field. The proposed method includes three main steps: image enhancement, detection of specular reflections, and reconstruction of damaged areas. To enhance and equalize the brightness characteristics of the image, we use the alpha-rooting method with an adaptive choice of the optimal parameter alpha. To detect specular reflections, we apply morphological filtering in the HSV color space. At the final stage, there is a reconstruction of damaged areas using adversarial neural networks. This combination makes it possible to quickly and effectively detect and remove specular reflections, which is confirmed by a series of experiments given by the experimental section of this work
