The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12667-016-0198-4.This paper describes the hybrid fuzzy sliding-mode control (HFSMC) for a three phase shunt active shunt filter for the power quality improvement. The Power Quality (PQ) problems in power distribution systems are not new but only recently the effects of these problems have gained public awareness. These non-linear loads are constructed by nonlinear devices in which the current is not proportional to the applied voltage. For the harmonic elimination different methods are used, but in this paper a novel fuzzy logic controller for a three-phase shunt active power filter for the power quality improvement such as reactive power and harmonic current compensation generated due to nonlinear loads. The hybrid fuzzy sliding-mode control (HFSMC) approach is proposed such that it can be applied with advantages to both fuzzy and sliding-mode controller. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control strategy. The results are found to be quite satisfactory to mitigate harmonic distortions, reactive power compensation and power quality improvement.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

This article is an open access article distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).Power quality (PQ) has become an important topic in todayā€™s power system scenario. PQ issues are raised not only in normal three-phase systems but also with the incorporation of different distributed generations (DGs), including renewable energy sources, storage systems, and other systems like diesel generators, fuel cells, etc. The prevalence of these issues comes from the non-linear features and rapid changing of power electronics devices, such as switch-mode converters for adjustable speed drives and diode or thyristor rectifiers. The wide use of these fast switching devices in the utility system leads to an increase in disturbances associated with harmonics and reactive power. The occurrence of PQ disturbances in turn creates several unwanted effects on the utility system. Therefore, many researchers are working on the enhancement of PQ using different custom power devices (CPDs). In this work, the authors highlight the significance of the PQ in the utility network, its effect, and its solution, using different CPDs, such as passive, active, and hybrid filters. Further, the authors point out several compensation strategies, including reference signal generation and gating signal strategies. In addition, this paper also presents the role of the active power filter (APF) in different DG systems. Some technical and economic considerations and future developments are also discussed in this literature. For easy reference, a volume of journals of more than 140 publications on this particular subject is reported. The effectiveness of this research work will boost researchersā€™ ability to select proper control methodology and compensation strategy for various applications of APFs for improving PQ.publishedVersio

In todayā€™s scenario due to market competition there is wide spread use of power electronic equipments in power system but these devises poses non-linear characteristics and fast switching action causes harmonics in the system. Harmonics is predominant power quality issue and generation of harmonics have adverse effect on sensitive equipments. These equipments will continue polluting the system more and more due to built-in compensation and sometimes for the lack of enforced regulations. Power quality issues are of biggest concern because poor power quality result in loss of reliability, increased cost and poor efficiency. Active power filters have been developed over There are different types of active power filters available among which shunt active power filter is extensively considered to eliminate the load current harmonics and reactive power compensation. In this work performance improvement of three-phase shunt active power filter to compensate harmonics current and reactive power to improve power quality is explained for three-phase systems. The insulated gate bipolar transistor based voltage source inverter with DC capacitor is used as active power filter. The shunt active filter employs instantaneous PQ theory for reference current generation. Adaptive hysteresis current controller is used for voltage source inverter switching signal generation and tuning of shunt active power filter which maintain the switching frequency the years to solve these problems to improve power quality by Harmonic Reduction. constant, hence overcoming the drawbacks of hysteresis band current controller. The shunt active power filter generates compensating signal which reduces the harmonic component of the system. DOI: 10.17762/ijritcc2321-8169.15033

The aim is to regulate the injection voltage of the SAPF to compensate the grid voltage via the injection transformer in addition to maintaining the load voltage stable. The control strategies investigated in this work include Backstepping Sliding Mode Control (BSMC) and a neuro-fuzzy controller based on ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) l. The proposed control strategies for the single-phase SAPF are initially evaluated in simulations under MATLAB/Simulink and then validated on a laboratory-scale hardware experimental set up consisting of a source and a single-phase SAPF. A comparative study of these controllers with respect to their performance and robustness in mitigating power quality against voltage disturbances and harmonics is presented. Both simulation and experimental results have demonstrated that ANFIS-based controller was able to achieve superior performance and a lower total harmonic distortion (THD) as compared to the other control methods.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Get PDF
This paper presents a novel harmonic identification algorithm of shunt active power filter for balanced and unbalanced three-phase systems based on the instantaneous power theory called instantaneous power theory with Fourier. Moreover, the optimal design of predictive current controller using an artificial intelligence technique called adaptive Tabu search is also proposed in the paper. These enhancements of the identification and current control parts are the aim of the good performance for shunt active power filter. The good results for harmonic mitigation using the proposed ideas in the paper are confirmed by the intensive simulation using SPS in SIMULINK. The simulation results show that the enhanced shunt active power filter can provide the minimum %THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of source currents and unity power factor after compensation. In addition, the %THD also follows the IEEE Std.519-1992
