    Evolutionary computing and particle filtering: a hardware-based motion estimation system

    Particle filters constitute themselves a highly powerful estimation tool, especially when dealing with non-linear non-Gaussian systems. However, traditional approaches present several limitations, which reduce significantly their performance. Evolutionary algorithms, and more specifically their optimization capabilities, may be used in order to overcome particle-filtering weaknesses. In this paper, a novel FPGA-based particle filter that takes advantage of evolutionary computation in order to estimate motion patterns is presented. The evolutionary algorithm, which has been included inside the resampling stage, mitigates the known sample impoverishment phenomenon, very common in particle-filtering systems. In addition, a hybrid mutation technique using two different mutation operators, each of them with a specific purpose, is proposed in order to enhance estimation results and make a more robust system. Moreover, implementing the proposed Evolutionary Particle Filter as a hardware accelerator has led to faster processing times than different software implementations of the same algorithm

    Stochastic particle advection velocimetry (SPAV): theory, simulations, and proof-of-concept experiments

    Particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) is widely used to measure time-resolved, three-dimensional velocity and pressure fields in fluid dynamics research. Inaccurate localization and tracking of particles is a key source of error in PTV, especially for single camera defocusing, plenoptic imaging, and digital in-line holography (DIH) sensors. To address this issue, we developed stochastic particle advection velocimetry (SPAV): a statistical data loss that improves the accuracy of PTV. SPAV is based on an explicit particle advection model that predicts particle positions over time as a function of the estimated velocity field. The model can account for non-ideal effects like drag on inertial particles. A statistical data loss that compares the tracked and advected particle positions, accounting for arbitrary localization and tracking uncertainties, is derived and approximated. We implement our approach using a physics-informed neural network, which simultaneously minimizes the SPAV data loss, a Navier-Stokes physics loss, and a wall boundary loss, where appropriate. Results are reported for simulated and experimental DIH-PTV measurements of laminar and turbulent flows. Our statistical approach significantly improves the accuracy of PTV reconstructions compared to a conventional data loss, resulting in an average reduction of error close to 50%. Furthermore, our framework can be readily adapted to work with other data assimilation techniques like state observer, Kalman filter, and adjoint-variational methods

    EECLA: A Novel Clustering Model for Improvement of Localization and Energy Efficient Routing Protocols in Vehicle Tracking Using Wireless Sensor Networks

    Due to increase of usage of wireless sensor networks (WSN) for various purposes leads to a required technology in the present world. Many applications are running with the concepts of WSN now, among that vehicle tracking is one which became prominent in security purposes. In our previous works we proposed an algorithm called EECAL (Energy Efficient Clustering Algorithm and Localization) to improve accuracy and performed well. But are not focused more on continuous tracking of a vehicle in better aspects. In this paper we proposed and refined the same algorithm as per the requirement. Detection and tracking of a vehicle when they are in larges areas is an issue. We mainly focused on proximity graphs and spatial interpolation techniques for getting exact boundaries. Other aspect of our work is to reduce consumption of energy which increases the life time of the network. Performance of system when in active state is another issue can be fixed by setting of peer nodes in communication. We made an attempt to compare our results with the existed works and felt much better our work. For handling localization, we used genetic algorithm which handled good of residual energy, fitness of the network in various aspects. At end we performed a simulation task that proved proposed algorithms performed well and experimental analysis gave us faith by getting less localization error factor

    Hardware-Based Particle Filter with Evolutionary Resampling Stage

    Autonomous systems require, in most of the cases, reasoning and decision-making capabilities. Moreover, the decision process has to occur in real time. Real-time computing means that every situation or event has to have an answer before a temporal deadline. In complex applications, these deadlines are usually in the order of milliseconds or even microseconds if the application is very demanding. In order to comply with these timing requirements, computing tasks have to be performed as fast as possible. The problem arises when computations are no longer simple, but very time-consuming operations. A good example can be found in autonomous navigation systems with visual-tracking submodules where Kalman filtering is the most extended solution. However, in recent years, some interesting new approaches have been developed. Particle filtering, given its more general problem-solving features, has reached an important position in the field. The aim of this thesis is to design, implement and validate a hardware platform that constitutes itself an embedded intelligent system. The proposed system would combine particle filtering and evolutionary computation algorithms to generate intelligent behavior. Traditional approaches to particle filtering or evolutionary computation have been developed in software platforms, including parallel capabilities to some extent. In this work, an additional goal is fully exploiting hardware implementation advantages. By using the computational resources available in a FPGA device, better performance results in terms of computation time are expected. These hardware resources will be in charge of extensive repetitive computations. With this hardware-based implementation, real-time features are also expected

    Reliable Navigational Scene Perception for Autonomous Ships in Maritime Environment

    Due to significant advances in robotics and transportation, research on autonomous ships has attracted considerable attention. The most critical task is to make the ships capable of accurately, reliably, and intelligently detecting their surroundings to achieve high levels of autonomy. Three deep learning-based models are constructed in this thesis to perform complex perceptual tasks such as identifying ships, analysing encounter situations, and recognising water surface objects. In this thesis, sensors, including the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and cameras, provide critical information for scene perception. Specifically, the AIS enables mid-range and long-range detection, assisting the decision-making system to take suitable and decisive action. A Convolutional Neural Network-Ship Movement Modes Classification (CNN-SMMC) is used to detect ships or objects. Following that, a Semi- Supervised Convolutional Encoder-Decoder Network (SCEDN) is developed to classify ship encounter situations and make a collision avoidance plan for the moving ships or objects. Additionally, cameras are used to detect short-range objects, a supplementary solution to ships or objects not equipped with an AIS. A Water Obstacle Detection Network based on Image Segmentation (WODIS) is developed to find potential threat targets. A series of quantifiable experiments have demonstrated that these models can provide reliable scene perception for autonomous ships

    Novel techniques of computational intelligence for analysis of astronomical structures

    Gravitational forces cause the formation and evolution of a variety of cosmological structures. The detailed investigation and study of these structures is a crucial step towards our understanding of the universe. This thesis provides several solutions for the detection and classification of such structures. In the first part of the thesis, we focus on astronomical simulations, and we propose two algorithms to extract stellar structures. Although they follow different strategies (while the first one is a downsampling method, the second one keeps all samples), both techniques help to build more effective probabilistic models. In the second part, we consider observational data, and the goal is to overcome some of the common challenges in observational data such as noisy features and imbalanced classes. For instance, when not enough examples are present in the training set, two different strategies are used: a) nearest neighbor technique and b) outlier detection technique. In summary, both parts of the thesis show the effectiveness of automated algorithms in extracting valuable information from astronomical databases
