    Automatic Image Registration in Infrared-Visible Videos using Polygon Vertices

    In this paper, an automatic method is proposed to perform image registration in visible and infrared pair of video sequences for multiple targets. In multimodal image analysis like image fusion systems, color and IR sensors are placed close to each other and capture a same scene simultaneously, but the videos are not properly aligned by default because of different fields of view, image capturing information, working principle and other camera specifications. Because the scenes are usually not planar, alignment needs to be performed continuously by extracting relevant common information. In this paper, we approximate the shape of the targets by polygons and use affine transformation for aligning the two video sequences. After background subtraction, keypoints on the contour of the foreground blobs are detected using DCE (Discrete Curve Evolution)technique. These keypoints are then described by the local shape at each point of the obtained polygon. The keypoints are matched based on the convexity of polygon's vertices and Euclidean distance between them. Only good matches for each local shape polygon in a frame, are kept. To achieve a global affine transformation that maximises the overlapping of infrared and visible foreground pixels, the matched keypoints of each local shape polygon are stored temporally in a buffer for a few number of frames. The matrix is evaluated at each frame using the temporal buffer and the best matrix is selected, based on an overlapping ratio criterion. Our experimental results demonstrate that this method can provide highly accurate registered images and that we outperform a previous related method

    Analysis of Amoeba Active Contours

    Subject of this paper is the theoretical analysis of structure-adaptive median filter algorithms that approximate curvature-based PDEs for image filtering and segmentation. These so-called morphological amoeba filters are based on a concept introduced by Lerallut et al. They achieve similar results as the well-known geodesic active contour and self-snakes PDEs. In the present work, the PDE approximated by amoeba active contours is derived for a general geometric situation and general amoeba metric. This PDE is structurally similar but not identical to the geodesic active contour equation. It reproduces the previous PDE approximation results for amoeba median filters as special cases. Furthermore, modifications of the basic amoeba active contour algorithm are analysed that are related to the morphological force terms frequently used with geodesic active contours. Experiments demonstrate the basic behaviour of amoeba active contours and its similarity to geodesic active contours.Comment: Revised version with several improvements for clarity, slightly extended experiments and discussion.     A new Edge Detector Based on Parametric Surface Model: Regression Surface Descriptor

    In this paper we present a new methodology for edge detection in digital images. The first originality of the proposed method is to consider image content as a parametric surface. Then, an original parametric local model of this surface representing image content is proposed. The few parameters involved in the proposed model are shown to be very sensitive to discontinuities in surface which correspond to edges in image content. This naturally leads to the design of an efficient edge detector. Moreover, a thorough analysis of the proposed model also allows us to explain how these parameters can be used to obtain edge descriptors such as orientations and curvatures. In practice, the proposed methodology offers two main advantages. First, it has high customization possibilities in order to be adjusted to a wide range of different problems, from coarse to fine scale edge detection. Second, it is very robust to blurring process and additive noise. Numerical results are presented to emphasis these properties and to confirm efficiency of the proposed method through a comparative study with other edge detectors.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures and 2 table
