    Modeling and supervisory control design for a combined cycle power plant

    The traditional control strategy based on PID controllers may be unsatisfactory when dealing with processes with large time delay and constraints. This paper presents a supervisory model based constrained predictive controller (MPC) for a combined cycle power plant (CCPP). First, a non-linear dynamic model of CCPP using the laws of physics was proposed. Then, the supervisory control using the linear constrained MPC method was designed to tune the performance of the PID controllers by including output constraints and manipulating the set points. This scheme showed excellent tracking and disturbance rejection results and improved performance compared with a stand-alone PID controller’s scheme

    Distributed model predictive control of steam/water loop in large scale ships

    In modern steam power plants, the ever-increasing complexity requires great reliability and flexibility of the control system. Hence, in this paper, the feasibility of a distributed model predictive control (DiMPC) strategy with an extended prediction self-adaptive control (EPSAC) framework is studied, in which the multiple controllers allow each sub-loop to have its own requirement flexibility. Meanwhile, the model predictive control can guarantee a good performance for the system with constraints. The performance is compared against a decentralized model predictive control (DeMPC) and a centralized model predictive control (CMPC). In order to improve the computing speed, a multiple objective model predictive control (MOMPC) is proposed. For the stability of the control system, the convergence of the DiMPC is discussed. Simulation tests are performed on the five different sub-loops of steam/water loop. The results indicate that the DiMPC may achieve similar performance as CMPC while outperforming the DeMPC method

    The potential of fractional order distributed MPC applied to steam/water loop in large scale ships

    The steam/water loop is a crucial part of a steam power plant. However, satisfying control performance is difficult to obtain due to the frequent disturbance and load fluctuation. A fractional order model predictive control was studied in this paper to improve the control performance of the steam/water loop. Firstly, the dynamic of the steam/water loop was introduced in large-scale ships. Then, the model predictive control with an extended prediction self adaptive controller framework was designed for the steam/water loop with a distributed scheme. Instead of an integer cost function, a fractional order cost function was applied in the model predictive control optimization step. The superiority of the fractional order model predictive control was validated with reference tracking and load fluctuation experiments

    A new state feedback H∞ control scheme is presented used in the boiler-turbine power units based on an improved particle swarm optimizing algorithm. Firstly, the nonlinear system is transformed into a linear time-varying system; then the H∞ control problem is transformed into the solution of a Riccati equation. The control effect of H∞ controller depends on the selection of matrix P, so an improved particle swarm optimizing (PSO) algorithm by introducing differential evolution algorithm is used to solve the Riccati equation. The main purpose is that mutation and crossover are introduced for a new population, and the population diversity is improved. It is beneficial to eliminate stagnation caused by premature convergence, and the algorithm convergence rate is improved. Finally, the real-time optimizing of the controller parameters is realized. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that a state feedback H∞ controller can be obtained, which can ensure asymptotic stability of the system, and the double objectives of stabilizing system and suppressing the disturbance are got. The system can work well over a large range working point

    Control oriented concentrating solar power (CSP) plant model and its applications

    Solar receivers in concentrating solar thermal power plants (CSP) undergo over 10,000 start-ups and shutdowns, and over 25,000 rapid rate of change in temperature on receivers due to cloud transients resulting in performance degradation and material fatigue in their expected lifetime of over 30 years. The research proposes to develop a three-level controller that uses multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) control technology to minimize the effect of these disturbances, improve plant performance, and extend plant life. The controller can be readily installed on any vendor supplied state-of-the-art control hardware.^ We propose a three-level controller architecture using multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) control for CSP plants that can be implemented on existing plants to improve performance, reliability, and extend the life of the plant. This architecture optimizes the performance on multiple time scalesreactive level (regulation to temperature set points), tactical level (adaptation of temperature set points), and strategic level (trading off fatigue life due to thermal cycling and current production). This controller unique to CSP plants operating at temperatures greater than 550°C, will make CSPs competitive with conventional power plants and contribute significantly towards the Sunshot goal of 0.06/kWh(e), while responding with agility to both market dynamics and changes in solar irradiance such as due to passing clouds. Moreover, our development of control software with performance guarantees will avoid early stage failures and permit smooth grid integration of the CSP power plants. The proposed controller can be implemented with existing control hardware infrastructure with little or no additional equipment.^ In the thesis, we demonstrate a dynamics model of CSP, of which different components are modelled with different time scales. We also show a real time control strategy of CSP control oriented model in steady state. Furthermore, we shown different controllers design for disturbance rejection and reference tracking to handle complex receiver dynamics under system disturbance and measurement noise. At last, we show different applications of this control oriented CSP model including life cycle enhancement and electricity load forecasting using both neural network and regression tree

    Flexible operation of large-scale coal-fired power plant integrated with solvent-based post-combustion CO2 capture based on neural network inverse control

    Post-combustion carbon capture (PCC) with chemical absorption has strong interactions with coal-fired power plant (CFPP). It is necessary to investigate dynamic characteristics of the integrated CFPP-PCC system to gain knowledge for flexible operation. It has been demonstrated that the integrated system exhibits large time inertial and this will incur additional challenge for controller design. Conventional PID controller cannot effectively control CFPP-PCC process. To overcome these barriers, this paper presents an improved neural network inverse control (NNIC) which can quickly operate the integrated system and handle with large time constant. Neural network (NN) is used to approximate inverse dynamic relationships of integrated CFPP-PCC system. The NN inverse model uses setpoints as model inputs and gets predictions of manipulated variables. The predicted manipulated variables are then introduced as feed-forward signals. In order to eliminate steady-state bias and to operate the integrated CFPP-PCC under different working conditions, improvements have been achieved with the addition of PID compensator. The improved NNIC is evaluated in a large-scale supercritical CFPP-PCC plant which is implemented in gCCS toolkit. Case studies are carried out considering variations in power setpoint and capture level setpoint. Simulation results reveal that proposed NNIC can track setpoints quickly and exhibit satisfactory control performances

    Temperature Control via Affine Nonlinear Systems for Intermediate Point of Supercritical Once-Through Boiler Units

    For the operation of the supercritical once-through boiler generation units, the control of the temperature at intermediate point (IPT) is highly significant. IPT is the steam temperature at the outlet of the separator. Currently, PID control algorithms are widely adopted for the IPT control. However, PID cannot achieve the optimal performances as the units’ dynamic characteristic changes at different working points due to the severe nonlinearity. To address the problem, a new control algorithm using affine nonlinear system is adopted for a 600 MW unit in this paper. In order to establish the model of IPT via affine nonlinear system, the simplified mechanism equations on the evaporation zone and steam separator of the unit are established. Then, the feedback linearizing control law can be obtained. Full range simulations with the load varying from 100% to 30% are conducted. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm, the performance of the new method is compared with the results of the PID control. The feed-water flow disturbances are considered in simulations of both of the two control methods. The comparison shows the new method has a better performance with a quicker response time and a smaller overshoot, which demonstrates the potential improvement for the supercritical once-through boiler generation unit control
