On Interference Cancellation and Iterative Techniques

    Get PDF
Recent research activities in the area of mobile radio communications have moved to third generation (3G) cellular systems to achieve higher quality with variable transmission rate of multimedia information. In this paper, an overview is presented of various interference cancellation and iterative detection techniques that are believed to be suitable for 3G wireless communications systems. Key concepts are space-time processing and space-division multiple access (or SDMA) techniques. SDMA techniques are possible with software antennas. Furthermore, to reduce receiver implementation complexity, iterative detection techniques are considered. A particularly attractive method uses tentative hard decisions, made on the received positions with the highest reliability, according to some criterion, and can potentially yield an important reduction in the computational requirements of an iterative receiver, with minimum penalty in error performance. A study of the tradeoffs between complexity and performance loss of iterative multiuser detection techniques is a good research topic

On multi-user EXIT chart analysis aided turbo-detected MBER beamforming designs

Abstract—This paper studies the mutual information transfer characteristics of a novel iterative soft interference cancellation (SIC) aided beamforming receiver communicating over both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multipath slow fading channels. Based on the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart technique, we investigate the convergence behavior of an iterative minimum bit error rate (MBER) multiuser detection (MUD) scheme as a function of both the system parameters and channel conditions in comparison to the SIC aided minimum mean square error (SIC-MMSE) MUD. Our simulation results show that the EXIT chart analysis is sufficiently accurate for the MBER MUD. Quantitatively, a two-antenna system was capable of supporting up to K=6 users at Eb/N0=3dB, even when their angular separation was relatively low, potentially below 20?. Simulation of Multi-element Antenna Systems for Navigation Applications

The application of user terminals with multiple antenna inputs for use with the global satellite navigation systems like GPS and Galileo becomes more and more attraction in last years. Multiple antennas may be spread over the user platform and provide signals required for the platform attitude estimation or may be arranged in an antenna array to be used together with array processing algorithms for improving signal reception, e.g. for multipath and interference mitigation. In order to generate signals for testing of receivers with multiple antenna inputs and corresponding receiver algorithms in a laboratory environment a unique HW signal simulation tool for wavefront simulation has been developed. The signals for a number of antenna elements in a flexible user defined geometry are first generated as digital signals in baseband and then mixed up to individual RF-outputs. The paper describes the principle function of the system and addresses some calibration issues. Measurement set-ups and results of data processing with simulated signals for different applications are shown and discussed

This paper studies the potential benefits of antenna arrays in cellular CDMA communications and proposes a powerful scheme to undertake the array processing at the base station in CDMA mobile systems. The proposed technique exploits the temporal structure of CDMA signals. The necessary information is extracted directly from the received signals, thus no training signal orPeer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Achievable Sum Rates of Half- and Full-Duplex Bidirectional OFDM Communication Links

While full-duplex (FD) transmission has the potential to double the system capacity, its substantial benefit can be offset by the self-interference (SI) and non-ideality of practical transceivers. In this paper, we investigate the achievable sum rates (ASRs) of half-duplex (HD) and FD transmissions with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), where the non-ideality is taken into consideration. Four transmission strategies are considered, namely HD with uniform power allocation (UPA), HD with non-UPA (NUPA), FD with UPA, and FD with NUPA. For each of the four transmission strategies, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize its ASR, and a (suboptimal/optimal) solution with low complexity is accordingly derived. Performance evaluations and comparisons are conducted for three typical channels, namely symmetric frequency-flat/selective and asymmetric frequency-selective channels. Results show that the proposed solutions for both HD and FD transmissions can achieve near optimal performances. For FD transmissions, the optimal solution can be obtained under typical conditions. In addition, several observations are made on the ASR performances of HD and FD transmissions.Comment: To appear in IEEE TVT. This paper solves the problem of sum achievable rate optimization of bidirectional FD OFDM link, where joint time and power allocation is involve

Multi-Step Knowledge-Aided Iterative ESPRIT for Direction Finding

In this work, we propose a subspace-based algorithm for DOA estimation which iteratively reduces the disturbance factors of the estimated data covariance matrix and incorporates prior knowledge which is gradually obtained on line. An analysis of the MSE of the reshaped data covariance matrix is carried out along with comparisons between computational complexities of the proposed and existing algorithms. Simulations focusing on closely-spaced sources, where they are uncorrelated and correlated, illustrate the improvements achieved.Comment: 7 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1703.1052
