Intrinsic Motivation and Mental Replay enable Efficient Online Adaptation in Stochastic Recurrent Networks
Autonomous robots need to interact with unknown, unstructured and changing
environments, constantly facing novel challenges. Therefore, continuous online
adaptation for lifelong-learning and the need of sample-efficient mechanisms to
adapt to changes in the environment, the constraints, the tasks, or the robot
itself are crucial. In this work, we propose a novel framework for
probabilistic online motion planning with online adaptation based on a
bio-inspired stochastic recurrent neural network. By using learning signals
which mimic the intrinsic motivation signalcognitive dissonance in addition
with a mental replay strategy to intensify experiences, the stochastic
recurrent network can learn from few physical interactions and adapts to novel
environments in seconds. We evaluate our online planning and adaptation
framework on an anthropomorphic KUKA LWR arm. The rapid online adaptation is
shown by learning unknown workspace constraints sample-efficiently from few
physical interactions while following given way points.Comment: accepted in Neural Network
Becoming Human with Humanoid
Nowadays, our expectations of robots have been significantly increases. The robot, which was initially only doing simple jobs, is now expected to be smarter and more dynamic. People want a robot that resembles a human (humanoid) has and has emotional intelligence that can perform action-reaction interactions. This book consists of two sections. The first section focuses on emotional intelligence, while the second section discusses the control of robotics. The contents of the book reveal the outcomes of research conducted by scholars in robotics fields to accommodate needs of society and industry
Walking Stabilization Using Step Timing and Location Adjustment on the Humanoid Robot, Atlas
While humans are highly capable of recovering from external disturbances and
uncertainties that result in large tracking errors, humanoid robots have yet to
reliably mimic this level of robustness. Essential to this is the ability to
combine traditional "ankle strategy" balancing with step timing and location
adjustment techniques. In doing so, the robot is able to step quickly to the
necessary location to continue walking. In this work, we present both a new
swing speed up algorithm to adjust the step timing, allowing the robot to set
the foot down more quickly to recover from errors in the direction of the
current capture point dynamics, and a new algorithm to adjust the desired
footstep, expanding the base of support to utilize the center of pressure
(CoP)-based ankle strategy for balance. We then utilize the desired centroidal
moment pivot (CMP) to calculate the momentum rate of change for our
inverse-dynamics based whole-body controller. We present simulation and
experimental results using this work, and discuss performance limitations and
potential improvements
Humanoid Robots
For many years, the human being has been trying, in all ways, to recreate the complex mechanisms that form the human body. Such task is extremely complicated and the results are not totally satisfactory. However, with increasing technological advances based on theoretical and experimental researches, man gets, in a way, to copy or to imitate some systems of the human body. These researches not only intended to create humanoid robots, great part of them constituting autonomous systems, but also, in some way, to offer a higher knowledge of the systems that form the human body, objectifying possible applications in the technology of rehabilitation of human beings, gathering in a whole studies related not only to Robotics, but also to Biomechanics, Biomimmetics, Cybernetics, among other areas. This book presents a series of researches inspired by this ideal, carried through by various researchers worldwide, looking for to analyze and to discuss diverse subjects related to humanoid robots. The presented contributions explore aspects about robotic hands, learning, language, vision and locomotion
