    Active Noise Control (ANC) system emphasizes at USAge of adaptation algorithm and adaptive control structure. In this research is presented experimental result of active noise control system at free space using Diagonal Recurrent Artificial Neural Network control structure. The objective of this research is to develop an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm for Diagonal Recurrent Artificial Neural Network control structure, named as Extended Kalman Filter Diagonal Recurrent (EKFDR) algorithm. Experimental result shows that amount of neuron in artificial neural network can be reduced by using diagonal recurrent artificial neural network, without lessening control system performance. Nonlinearity of secondary path in active noise control system can complicate control process. Experimental result shows that diagonal recurrent artificial neural network with EKFDR algorithm produced a better performance than linear controller in compensating of secondary path nonlinearity

    Reinforcement learning or active inference?

    This paper questions the need for reinforcement learning or control theory when optimising behaviour. We show that it is fairly simple to teach an agent complicated and adaptive behaviours using a free-energy formulation of perception. In this formulation, agents adjust their internal states and sampling of the environment to minimize their free-energy. Such agents learn causal structure in the environment and sample it in an adaptive and self-supervised fashion. This results in behavioural policies that reproduce those optimised by reinforcement learning and dynamic programming. Critically, we do not need to invoke the notion of reward, value or utility. We illustrate these points by solving a benchmark problem in dynamic programming; namely the mountain-car problem, using active perception or inference under the free-energy principle. The ensuing proof-of-concept may be important because the free-energy formulation furnishes a unified account of both action and perception and may speak to a reappraisal of the role of dopamine in the brain

    Action and behavior: a free-energy formulation

    We have previously tried to explain perceptual inference and learning under a free-energy principle that pursues Helmholtz’s agenda to understand the brain in terms of energy minimization. It is fairly easy to show that making inferences about the causes of sensory data can be cast as the minimization of a free-energy bound on the likelihood of sensory inputs, given an internal model of how they were caused. In this article, we consider what would happen if the data themselves were sampled to minimize this bound. It transpires that the ensuing active sampling or inference is mandated by ergodic arguments based on the very existence of adaptive agents. Furthermore, it accounts for many aspects of motor behavior; from retinal stabilization to goal-seeking. In particular, it suggests that motor control can be understood as fulfilling prior expectations about proprioceptive sensations. This formulation can explain why adaptive behavior emerges in biological agents and suggests a simple alternative to optimal control theory. We illustrate these points using simulations of oculomotor control and then apply to same principles to cued and goal-directed movements. In short, the free-energy formulation may provide an alternative perspective on the motor control that places it in an intimate relationship with perception

    Active Noise Control using Variable step-size Griffiths’ LMS (VGLMS) algorithm on Real-Time platform

    This paper proposes implementation of Griffith’s Variable step-size algorithm for Active Noise Control (ANC) on ADSP-TS201 EZ-Kit Lite. The dual computational units and execution of up to four instructions per cycle which are special features over other processors are best utilized to generate an optimized code. The VGLMS provides improved secondary path estimation and computations involved are marginal as the same gradient is used for step-size computation and coefficient adaptation. The improved secondary path estimate, in turn improves the ANC performance. Further, variable step-size algorithm is used for the main-path to achieve faster convergence. Both for narrowband (fundamental and its harmonics) and broadband noise fields, for a duct the attenuation achieved is 25 dB and 15 dB respectively. The program execution time was only 1.25% for an input sampling rate of 1 KHz which indicates the utility of the special features of the processor considered. Further these features have enabled in bringing down the program memory requirement in the implementation of the algorithm

    Beyond Basins of Attraction: Quantifying Robustness of Natural Dynamics

    Properly designing a system to exhibit favorable natural dynamics can greatly simplify designing or learning the control policy. However, it is still unclear what constitutes favorable natural dynamics and how to quantify its effect. Most studies of simple walking and running models have focused on the basins of attraction of passive limit-cycles and the notion of self-stability. We instead emphasize the importance of stepping beyond basins of attraction. We show an approach based on viability theory to quantify robust sets in state-action space. These sets are valid for the family of all robust control policies, which allows us to quantify the robustness inherent to the natural dynamics before designing the control policy or specifying a control objective. We illustrate our formulation using spring-mass models, simple low dimensional models of running systems. We then show an example application by optimizing robustness of a simulated planar monoped, using a gradient-free optimization scheme.     The free energy cost of reducing noise while maintaining a high sensitivity

    Living systems need to be highly responsive, and also to keep fluctuations low. These goals are incompatible in equilibrium systems due to the Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem (FDT). Here, we show that biological sensory systems, driven far from equilibrium by free energy consumption, can reduce their intrinsic fluctuations while maintaining high responsiveness. By developing a continuum theory of the E. coli chemotaxis pathway, we demonstrate that adaptation can be understood as a non-equilibrium phase transition controlled by free energy dissipation, and it is characterized by a breaking of the FDT. We show that the maximum response at short time is enhanced by free energy dissipation. At the same time, the low frequency fluctuations and the adaptation error decrease with the free energy dissipation algebraically and exponentially, respectively

    Stochasticity (or noise) at cellular and molecular levels has been observed extensively as a universal feature for living systems. However, how living systems deal with noise while performing desirable biological functions remains a major mystery. Regulatory network configurations, such as their topology and timescale, are shown to be critical in attenuating noise, and noise is also found to facilitate cell fate decision. Here we review major recent findings on noise attenuation through regulatory control, the benefit of noise via noise-induced cellular plasticity during developmental patterning, and summarize key principles underlying noise control

    Reconstructing the Traffic State by Fusion of Heterogeneous Data

    We present an advanced interpolation method for estimating smooth spatiotemporal profiles for local highway traffic variables such as flow, speed and density. The method is based on stationary detector data as typically collected by traffic control centres, and may be augmented by floating car data or other traffic information. The resulting profiles display transitions between free and congested traffic in great detail, as well as fine structures such as stop-and-go waves. We establish the accuracy and robustness of the method and demonstrate three potential applications: 1. compensation for gaps in data caused by detector failure; 2. separation of noise from dynamic traffic information; and 3. the fusion of floating car data with stationary detector data.Comment: For more information see http://www.mtreiber.de or http://www.akesting.d
