Real scenario and simulations on GLOSA traffic light system for reduced CO2 emissions, waiting time and travel time
Cooperative ITS is enabling vehicles to communicate with the infrastructure
to provide improvements in traffic control. A promising approach consists in
anticipating the road profile and the upcoming dynamic events like traffic
lights. This topic has been addressed in the French public project Co-Drive
through functions developed by Valeo named Green Light Optimal Speed Advisor
(GLOSA). The system advises the optimal speed to pass the next traffic light
without stopping. This paper presents results of its performance in different
scenarios through simulations and real driving measurements. A scaling is done
in an urban area, with different penetration rates in vehicle and
infrastructure equipment for vehicular communication. Our simulation results
indicate that GLOSA can reduce CO2 emissions, waiting time and travel time,

ITERL: A Wireless Adaptive System for Efficient Road Lighting
This work presents the development and construction of an adaptive street lighting system
that improves safety at intersections, which is the result of applying low-power Internet of Things
(IoT) techniques to intelligent transportation systems. A set of wireless sensor nodes using the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.15.4 standard with additional internet
protocol (IP) connectivity measures both ambient conditions and vehicle transit. These measurements
are sent to a coordinator node that collects and passes them to a local controller, which then makes
decisions leading to the streetlight being turned on and its illumination level controlled. Streetlights
are autonomous, powered by photovoltaic energy, and wirelessly connected, achieving a high degree
of energy efficiency. Relevant data are also sent to the highway conservation center, allowing it to

Analysis, simulation and testing of ITS applications based on wireless communication technologies
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) aim to improve road transport safety and efficiency, to manage road networks in the interest of the society and to provide real time responses to events. In order to reach these goals, real time feedback to the drivers is expected through the integration of telecommunications, sensing and information technologies with transport engineering. Wireless communication technologies, that have been used in industrial applications for more than 30 years, play a crucial role in ITS, as based on the concept of multiple devices (on both vehicle and infrastructure side) interconnected in different ways.
Connectivity, in tandem with sensing technologies, is fuelling the innovations that will inevitably lead to the next big opportunity for road transport: autonomous vehicles.
Therefore, this study has investigated - through analysis, simulation and field testing – on applications based on wireless communication technologies meant to support both Data acquisition and Data diffusion as fundamental aspects/ phases in ITS, where data is widely individuated as being the key element
PRIORITY BASED TRAFFIC LIGHTS CONTROLLER USING WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS
Vehicular traffic is continuously increasing around the world, especially in large urban areas. The resulting congestion has become a major concern to transportation specialists and decision makers. The existing methods for traffic management, surveillance and control are not adequately efficient in terms of performance, cost, maintenance, and support. In this paper, the design of a system that utilizes and efficiently manages traffic light controllers is presented. In particular, we present an adaptive traffic control system based on a new traffic infrastructure using Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). These techniques are dynamically adaptive to traffic conditions on both single and multiple intersections. An intelligent traffic light controller system with a new method of vehicle detection and dynamic traffic signal time manipulation is used in the project. The project is also designed to control traffic over multiple intersections and follows international standards for traffic light operations. A central monitoring station is designed to monitor all access nodes.
New Solutions Based On Wireless Networks For Dynamic Traffic Lights Management: A Comparison Between IEEE 802.15.4 And Bluetooth
Abstract
The Wireless Sensor Networks are widely used to detect and exchange information and in recent years they have been increasingly involved in Intelligent Transportation System applications, especially in dynamic management of signalized intersections. In fact, the real-time knowledge of information concerning traffic light junctions represents a valid solution to congestion problems. In this paper, a wireless network architecture, based on IEEE 802.15.4 or Bluetooth, in order to monitor vehicular traffic flows near to traffic lights, is introduced. Moreover, an innovative algorithm is proposed in order to determine dynamically green times and phase sequence of traffic lights, based on measured values of traffic flows. Several simulations compare IEEE 802.15.4 and Bluetooth protocols in order to identify the more suitable communication protocol for ITS applications. Furthermore, in order to confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm for the dynamic management of traffic lights, some case studies have been considered and several simulations have been performed
Towards a Smart Intersection using Traffic Load Balancing Algorithm
Over the past few years vehicle usage has increased
exponentially worldwide, but the capacities of transportation
systems are still limited, and have not improved in a tantamount
way to expeditiously cope with the number of vehicles traveling
on them. As a result, road jamming and traffic correlated
pollution has increased, and became complicated and chaotic,
leading to an adverse effect socially and financially worldwide.
Fortunately, Intelligent Transportation Systems are promising
technologies that have been introduced to assist in reducing the
side effects of these problems. The intelligence of these systems
mainly depends on the accuracy and timely reliable application
of real time traffic information. In this paper, we propose a novel
mechanism based on queuing theory aiming at enhancing the
load balancing and reducing waiting times on busy road
intersections. The simulation results were obtained using the
OpNet simulator and have shown that the proposed mechanism
can effectively reduce average waiting time and queue lengths up
to 44% and thus provide an efficient solution for the load
balancing problem
