    NONLINEAR ADAPTIVE HEADING CONTROL FOR AN UNDERACTUATED SURFACE VESSEL WITH CONSTRAINED INPUT AND SIDESLIP ANGLE COMPENSATION

    In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive heading controller is developed for an underactuated surface vessel with constrained input and sideslip angle compensation. The controller design is accomplished in a framework of backstepping technique. First, to amend the irrationality of the traditional definition of the desired heading, the desired heading is compensated by the sideslip angle. Considering the actuator physical constrain, a hyperbolic tangent function and a Nussbaum function are introduced to handle the nonlinear part of control input. The error and the disturbance are estimated and compensated by an adaptive control law. In addition, to avoid the complicated calculation of time derivatives of the virtual control, the command filter is introduced to integrate with the control law. It is analysed by the Lyapunov theory that the closed loop system is guaranteed to be uniformly ultimately bounded stability. Finally, the simulation studies illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method

    Adaptive backstepping controller is designed for tracking purpose of nonlinear system with unknown parameter is injected to it. Gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is integrated with the designed controller in order to automatically tune its control parameters and adaptation gain since the tracking performance of the controller relies on these parameters. Performance evaluation is observed based on the tracking output and the tracking error between reference input and the system’s output. The effectiveness of the adaptive backstepping controller is verified by looking at the lowest amount value of Sum of Squared Error (SSE) attained from the simulation process. The results show that the system’s output follow the reference input given with remarkably small tracking error

    Adaptive backstepping control for ship nonlinear active fin system based on disturbance observer and neural network

    Adaptive backstepping control based on disturbance observer and neural network for ship nonlinear active fin system is proposed. One disturbance observer is given to observe the disturbances of the system, by this way, the response time is shorten and the negative impact of disturbance and uncertain elements of the system is reduced. In addition, radial basic function neural network (RBFNN) is proposed to approach the unknown elements in the ship nonlinear active fin system, therefor the system can obtain good roll reduction effectiveness and overcome the uncertainties of the model, the designed controller can maintain the ship roll angle at desired value. Finally, the simulation results are given for a supply vessel to verify the successfulness of the proposed controller

    Due to the intensive development of the global economy, many problems are constantly emerging connected to the safety of ships’ motion in the context of increasing marine traffic. These problems seem to be especially significant for the further development of marine transportation services, with the need to considerably increase their efficiency and reliability. One of the most commonly used approaches to ensuring safety and efficiency is the wide implementation of various automated systems for guidance and control, including such popular systems as marine autopilots, dynamic positioning systems, speed control systems, automatic routing installations, etc. This Special Issue focuses on various problems related to the analysis, design, modelling, and operation of the aforementioned systems. It covers such actual problems as tracking control, path following control, ship weather routing, course keeping control, control of autonomous underwater vehicles, ship collision avoidance. These problems are investigated using methods such as neural networks, sliding mode control, genetic algorithms, L2-gain approach, optimal damping concept, fuzzy logic and others.     Review of dynamic positioning control in maritime microgrid systems

    For many offshore activities, including offshore oil and gas exploration and offshore wind farm construction, it is essential to keep the position and heading of the vessel stable. The dynamic positioning system is a progressive technology, which is extensively used in shipping and other maritime structures. To maintain the vessels or platforms from displacement, its thrusters are used automatically to control and stabilize the position and heading of vessels in sea state disturbances. The theory of dynamic positioning has been studied and developed in terms of control techniques to achieve greater accuracy and reduce ship movement caused by environmental disturbance for more than 30 years. This paper reviews the control strategies and architecture of the DPS in marine vessels. In addition, it suggests possible control principles and makes a comparison between the advantages and disadvantages of existing literature. Some details for future research on DP control challenges are discussed in this paper

    Nonlinear steering control under input magnitude and rate constraints with exponential convergence

    A ship steering control is designed for a nonlinear maneuvering model whose rudder manipulation is constrained in both magnitude and rate. In our method, the tracking problem of the target heading angle with input constraints is converted into the tracking problem for a strict-feedback system without any input constraints. To derive this system, hyperbolic tangent (tanh⁥\tanh) function and auxiliary variables are introduced to deal with the input constraints. Furthermore, using the feature of the derivative of tanh⁥\tanh function, auxiliary systems are successfully derived in the strict-feedback form. The backstepping method is utilized to construct the feedback control law for the resulting cascade system. The proposed steering control is verified in numerical experiments, and the result shows that the tracking of the target heading angle is successful using the proposed control law.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, a preprint submitted to the Journal of Marine Science and Technolog

    Adaptive backstepping position tracking control of quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle system

    In this work, an adaptive backstepping position tracking control using neural network (NN) approximation mechanism is proposed with respect to the translational system of quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (QUAV). Concerning the translational system of QUAV, on the one hand, it does not satisfy the matching condition and is an under-actuation dynamic system; on the other hand, it is with strong nonlinearity containing some uncertainty. To achieve the control objective, an intermediary control is introduced to handle the under-actuation problem, then the backstepping technique is combined with NN approximation strategy, which is employed to compensate the uncertainty of the system. Compared with traditional adaptive methods, the proposed adaptive NN position control of QUAV can alleviate the computation burden effectively, because it only trains a scalar adaptive parameter instead of the adaptive parameter vector or matrix. Finally, according to Lyapunov stability proof and computer simulation, it is proved that the control tasks can be accomplished

    Automatic ship heading control is a part of the automatic navigation system. It is charged with the task of maintaining the actual ship’s course angle or actual ship’s course without human intervention in accordance with the set course or setting parameter and maintaining this condition under the effect of disturbing influences. Thus, the corrective influence on deviations from a course can be rendered by the position of a rudder or controlling influence that leads to the rotary movement of a vessel around a vertical axis that represents a problem, which can be solved with the use of fuzzy logic. In this paper, we propose to consider the estimation of the efficiency of fuzzy controllers in systems of automatic control of ship movement, obtained by analysis of a method of the formalized record of a logic conclusion and structure of the fuzzy controller. The realization of this allows to carry out effective stabilization of a course angle of a vessel taking into account existing restrictions

    A Survey of path following control strategies for UAVs focused on quadrotors

    The trajectory control problem, defined as making a vehicle follow a pre-established path in space, can be solved by means of trajectory tracking or path following. In the trajectory tracking problem a timed reference position is tracked. The path following approach removes any time dependence of the problem, resulting in many advantages on the control performance and design. An exhaustive review of path following algorithms applied to quadrotor vehicles has been carried out, the most relevant are studied in this paper.
