    Adaptive SLAM with synthetic stereo dataset generation for real-time dense 3D reconstruction

    International audienceIn robotic mapping and navigation, of prime importance today with the trend for autonomous cars, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms often use stereo vision to extract 3D information of the surrounding world. Whereas the number of creative methods for stereo-based SLAM is continuously increasing, the variety of datasets is relatively poor and the size of their contents relatively small. This size issue is increasingly problematic, with the recent explosion of deep learning based approaches, several methods require an important amount of data. Those multiple techniques contribute to enhance the precision of both localization estimation and mapping estimation to a point where the accuracy of the sensors used to get the ground truth might be questioned. Finally, because today most of these technologies are embedded on on-board systems, the power consumption and real-time constraints turn to be key requirements. Our contribution is twofold: we propose an adaptive SLAM method that reduces the number of processed frame with minimum impact error, and we make available a synthetic flexible stereo dataset with absolute ground truth, which allows to run new benchmarks for visual odometry challenges.     Event-based Vision: A Survey

    Event cameras are bio-inspired sensors that differ from conventional frame cameras: Instead of capturing images at a fixed rate, they asynchronously measure per-pixel brightness changes, and output a stream of events that encode the time, location and sign of the brightness changes. Event cameras offer attractive properties compared to traditional cameras: high temporal resolution (in the order of microseconds), very high dynamic range (140 dB vs. 60 dB), low power consumption, and high pixel bandwidth (on the order of kHz) resulting in reduced motion blur. Hence, event cameras have a large potential for robotics and computer vision in challenging scenarios for traditional cameras, such as low-latency, high speed, and high dynamic range. However, novel methods are required to process the unconventional output of these sensors in order to unlock their potential. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging field of event-based vision, with a focus on the applications and the algorithms developed to unlock the outstanding properties of event cameras. We present event cameras from their working principle, the actual sensors that are available and the tasks that they have been used for, from low-level vision (feature detection and tracking, optic flow, etc.) to high-level vision (reconstruction, segmentation, recognition). We also discuss the techniques developed to process events, including learning-based techniques, as well as specialized processors for these novel sensors, such as spiking neural networks. Additionally, we highlight the challenges that remain to be tackled and the opportunities that lie ahead in the search for a more efficient, bio-inspired way for machines to perceive and interact with the world

    SLAM-based 3D outdoor reconstructions from lidar data

    The use of depth (RGBD) cameras to reconstruct large outdoor environments is not feasible due to lighting conditions and low depth range. LIDAR sensors can be used instead. Most state of the art SLAM methods are devoted to indoor environments and depth (RGBD) cameras. We have adapted two SLAM systems to work with LIDAR data. We have compared the systems for LIDAR and RGBD data by performing quantitative evaluations. Results show that the best method for LIDAR data is RTAB-Map with a clear difference. Additionally, RTAB-Map has been used to create 3D reconstructions with and without photometry from a visible color camera.     Tracking and Mapping in Medical Computer Vision: A Review

    As computer vision algorithms are becoming more capable, their applications in clinical systems will become more pervasive. These applications include diagnostics such as colonoscopy and bronchoscopy, guiding biopsies and minimally invasive interventions and surgery, automating instrument motion and providing image guidance using pre-operative scans. Many of these applications depend on the specific visual nature of medical scenes and require designing and applying algorithms to perform in this environment. In this review, we provide an update to the field of camera-based tracking and scene mapping in surgery and diagnostics in medical computer vision. We begin with describing our review process, which results in a final list of 515 papers that we cover. We then give a high-level summary of the state of the art and provide relevant background for those who need tracking and mapping for their clinical applications. We then review datasets provided in the field and the clinical needs therein. Then, we delve in depth into the algorithmic side, and summarize recent developments, which should be especially useful for algorithm designers and to those looking to understand the capability of off-the-shelf methods. We focus on algorithms for deformable environments while also reviewing the essential building blocks in rigid tracking and mapping since there is a large amount of crossover in methods. Finally, we discuss the current state of the tracking and mapping methods along with needs for future algorithms, needs for quantification, and the viability of clinical applications in the field. We conclude that new methods need to be designed or combined to support clinical applications in deformable environments, and more focus needs to be put into collecting datasets for training and evaluation.Comment: 31 pages, 17 figure

    A comprehensive survey on recent deep learning-based methods applied to surgical data

    Minimally invasive surgery is highly operator dependant with a lengthy procedural time causing fatigue to surgeon and risks to patients such as injury to organs, infection, bleeding, and complications of anesthesia. To mitigate such risks, real-time systems are desired to be developed that can provide intra-operative guidance to surgeons. For example, an automated system for tool localization, tool (or tissue) tracking, and depth estimation can enable a clear understanding of surgical scenes preventing miscalculations during surgical procedures. In this work, we present a systematic review of recent machine learning-based approaches including surgical tool localization, segmentation, tracking, and 3D scene perception. Furthermore, we provide a detailed overview of publicly available benchmark datasets widely used for surgical navigation tasks. While recent deep learning architectures have shown promising results, there are still several open research problems such as a lack of annotated datasets, the presence of artifacts in surgical scenes, and non-textured surfaces that hinder 3D reconstruction of the anatomical structures.     Exploiting Structural Regularities and Beyond: Vision-based Localization and Mapping in Man-Made Environments

    Image-based estimation of camera motion, known as visual odometry (VO), plays a very important role in many robotic applications such as control and navigation of unmanned mobile robots, especially when no external navigation reference signal is available. The core problem of VO is the estimation of the camera’s ego-motion (i.e. tracking) either between successive frames, namely relative pose estimation, or with respect to a global map, namely absolute pose estimation. This thesis aims to develop efficient, accurate and robust VO solutions by taking advantage of structural regularities in man-made environments, such as piece-wise planar structures, Manhattan World and more generally, contours and edges. Furthermore, to handle challenging scenarios that are beyond the limits of classical sensor based VO solutions, we investigate a recently emerging sensor — the event camera and study on event-based mapping — one of the key problems in the event-based VO/SLAM. The main achievements are summarized as follows. First, we revisit an old topic on relative pose estimation: accurately and robustly estimating the fundamental matrix given a collection of independently estimated homograhies. Three classical methods are reviewed and then we show a simple but nontrivial two-step normalization within the direct linear method that achieves similar performance to the less attractive and more computationally intensive hallucinated points based method. Second, an efficient 3D rotation estimation algorithm for depth cameras in piece-wise planar environments is presented. It shows that by using surface normal vectors as an input, planar modes in the corresponding density distribution function can be discovered and continuously tracked using efficient non-parametric estimation techniques. The relative rotation can be estimated by registering entire bundles of planar modes by using robust L1-norm minimization. Third, an efficient alternative to the iterative closest point algorithm for real-time tracking of modern depth cameras in ManhattanWorlds is developed. We exploit the common orthogonal structure of man-made environments in order to decouple the estimation of the rotation and the three degrees of freedom of the translation. The derived camera orientation is absolute and thus free of long-term drift, which in turn benefits the accuracy of the translation estimation as well. Fourth, we look into a more general structural regularity—edges. A real-time VO system that uses Canny edges is proposed for RGB-D cameras. Two novel alternatives to classical distance transforms are developed with great properties that significantly improve the classical Euclidean distance field based methods in terms of efficiency, accuracy and robustness. Finally, to deal with challenging scenarios that go beyond what standard RGB/RGB-D cameras can handle, we investigate the recently emerging event camera and focus on the problem of 3D reconstruction from data captured by a stereo event-camera rig moving in a static scene, such as in the context of stereo Simultaneous Localization and Mapping

    FroDO: From Detections to 3D Objects

    Object-oriented maps are important for scene understanding since they jointly capture geometry and semantics, allow individual instantiation and meaningful reasoning about objects. We introduce FroDO, a method for accurate 3D reconstruction of object instances from RGB video that infers object location, pose and shape in a coarse-to-fine manner. Key to FroDO is to embed object shapes in a novel learnt space that allows seamless switching between sparse point cloud and dense DeepSDF decoding. Given an input sequence of localized RGB frames, FroDO first aggregates 2D detections to instantiate a category-aware 3D bounding box per object. A shape code is regressed using an encoder network before optimizing shape and pose further under the learnt shape priors using sparse and dense shape representations. The optimization uses multi-view geometric, photometric and silhouette losses. We evaluate on real-world datasets, including Pix3D, Redwood-OS, and ScanNet, for single-view, multi-view, and multi-object reconstruction.Comment: To be published in CVPR 2020.
