    P-class phasor measurement unit algorithms using adaptive filtering to enhance accuracy at off-nominal frequencies

    While the present standard C.37.118-2005 for Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) requires testing only at steady-state conditions, proposed new versions of the standard require much more stringent testing, involving frequency ramps and off-nominal frequency testing. This paper presents two new algorithms for “P Class” PMUs which enable performance at off-nominal frequencies to be retained at levels comparable to the performance for nominal frequency input. The performances of the algorithms are compared to the “Basic” Synchrophasor Estimation Model described in the new standard. The proposed algorithms show a much better performance than the “Basic” algorithm, particularly in the measurements of frequency and rate-of-change-of-frequency at off-nominal frequencies and in the presence of unbalance and harmonics

    Adaptive gain processing with offending frequency suppression for digital hearing aids

    Journal ArticleDigital hearing aids identify acoustic feedback signals and cancel them continuously in a closed loop with an adaptive filter. This scheme facilitates larger hearing aid gain and improves the output sound quality of hearing aids. However, the output sound quality deteriorates as the hearing aid gain is increased. This paper presents two methods to modify the forward path gain in digital hearing aids. The first approach employs a variable, frequency-dependent gain function that is lower at frequencies of the incoming signal where the information is perceptually insignificant. The second method of this paper automatically identifies and suppresses residual acoustical feedback components at frequencies that have the potential to drive the system to instability. The suppressed frequency components are monitored and the suppression is removed when such frequencies no longer pose a threat to drive the hearing aid system into instability. Together, the gain processing methods of this paper provide 8 to 12 dB more hearing aid gain than feedback cancelers with fixed gain functions. Furthermore, experimental results obtained with real world hearing aid gain profiles indicate that the gain processing methods of this paper, individually and combined, provide less distortion in the output sound quality than classical feedback cancelers enabling the use of more comfortable style hearing aids for patients with moderate to profound hearing loss

    Adaptive notch filtering for tracking multiple complex sinusoid signals

    This thesis is related to the field of digital signal processing; where the aim of this research is to develop features of an infinite impulse response adaptive notch filter capable of tracking multiple complex sinusoid signals. Adaptive notch filters are commonly used in: Radar, Sonar, and Communication systems, and have the ability to track the frequencies of real or complex sinusoid signals; thus removing noise from an estimate, and enhancing the performance of a system. This research programme began by implementing four currently proposed adaptive notch structures. These structures were simulated and compared: for tracking between two and four signals; however, in their current form they are only capable of tracking real sinusoid signals. Next, one of these structures is developed further, to facilitate the ability to track complex sinusoid signals. This original structure gives superior performance over Regalia's comparable structure under certain conditions, which has been proven by simulations and results. Complex adaptive notch filter structures generally contain two parameters: the first tracks a target frequency, then the second controls the adaptive notch filter's bandwidth. This thesis develops the notch filter, so that the bandwidth parameter can be adapted via a method of steepest ascent; and also investigates tracking complex-valued chirp signals. Lastly, stochastic search methods are considered; and particle swarm optimisation has been applied to reinitialise an adaptive notch filter, when tracking two signals; thus more quickly locating an unknown frequency, after the frequency of the complex sinusoid signal jumps

    An FPGA architecture design of a high performance adaptive notch filter

    The occurrence of narrowband interference near frequencies carrying information is a common problem in modern control and signal processing applications. A very narrow notch filter is required in order to remove the unwanted signal while not compromising the integrity of the carrier signal. In many practical situations, the interference may wander within a frequency band, in which case a wider notch filter would be needed to guarantee its removal, which may also allow for the degradation of information being carried in nearby frequencies. If the interference frequency could be autonomously tracked, a narrow bandwidth notch filter could be successfully implemented for the particular frequency. Adaptive signal processing is a powerful technique that can be used in the tracking and elimination of such a signal. An application where an adaptive notch filter becomes necessary is in biomedical instrumentation, such as the electrocardiogram recorder. The recordings can become useless when in the presence of electromagnetic fields generated by power lines. Research was conducted to fully characterize the interference. Research on notch filter structures and adaptive filter algorithms has been carried out. The lattice form filter structure was chosen for its inherent stability and performance benefits. A new adaptive filter algorithm was developed targeting a hardware implementation. The algorithm used techniques from several other algorithms that were found to be beneficial. This work developed the hardware implementation of a lattice form adaptive notch filter to be used for the removal of power line interference from electrocardiogram signals. The various design tradeo s encountered were documented. The final design was targeted toward multiple field programmable gate arrays using multiple optimization efforts. Those results were then compared. The adaptive notch filter was able to successfully track and remove the interfering signal. The lattice form structure utilized by the proposed filter was verified to exhibit an inherently stable realization. The filter was subjected to various environments that modeled the different power line disturbances that could be present. The final filter design resulted in a 3 dB bandwidth of 15.8908 Hz, and a null depth of 54 dB. For the baseline test case, the algorithm achieved convergence after 270 iterations. The final hardware implementation was successfully verified against the MATLAB simulation results. A speedup of 3.8 was seen between the Xilinx Virtex-5 and Spartan-II device technologies. The final design used a small fraction of the available resources for each of the two devices that were characterized. This would allow the component to be more readily available to be added to existing projects, or further optimized by utilizing additional logic

    dissertationHearing aids suffer from the problem of acoustic feedback that limits the gain provided by hearing aids. Moreover, the output sound quality of hearing aids may be compromised in the presence of background acoustic noise. Digital hearing aids use advanced signal processing to reduce acoustic feedback and background noise to improve the output sound quality. However, it is known that the output sound quality of digital hearing aids deteriorates as the hearing aid gain is increased. Furthermore, popular subband or transform domain digital signal processing in modern hearing aids introduces analysis-synthesis delays in the forward path. Long forward-path delays are not desirable because the processed sound combines with the unprocessed sound that arrives at the cochlea through the vent and changes the sound quality. In this dissertation, we employ a variable, frequency-dependent gain function that is lower at frequencies of the incoming signal where the information is perceptually insignificant. In addition, the method of this dissertation automatically identifies and suppresses residual acoustical feedback components at frequencies that have the potential to drive the system to instability. The suppressed frequency components are monitored and the suppression is removed when such frequencies no longer pose a threat to drive the hearing aid system into instability. Together, the method of this dissertation provides more stable gain over traditional methods by reducing acoustical coupling between the microphone and the loudspeaker of a hearing aid. In addition, the method of this dissertation performs necessary hearing aid signal processing with low-delay characteristics. The central idea for the low-delay hearing aid signal processing is a spectral gain shaping method (SGSM) that employs parallel parametric equalization (EQ) filters. Parameters of the parametric EQ filters and associated gain values are selected using a least-squares approach to obtain the desired spectral response. Finally, the method of this dissertation switches to a least-squares adaptation scheme with linear complexity at the onset of howling. The method adapts to the altered feedback path quickly and allows the patient to not lose perceivable information. The complexity of the least-squares estimate is reduced by reformulating the least-squares estimate into a Toeplitz system and solving it with a direct Toeplitz solver. The increase in stable gain over traditional methods and the output sound quality were evaluated with psychoacoustic experiments on normal-hearing listeners with speech and music signals. The results indicate that the method of this dissertation provides 8 to 12 dB more hearing aid gain than feedback cancelers with traditional fixed gain functions. Furthermore, experimental results obtained with real world hearing aid gain profiles indicate that the method of this dissertation provides less distortion in the output sound quality than classical feedback cancelers, enabling the use of more comfortable style hearing aids for patients with moderate to profound hearing loss. Extensive MATLAB simulations and subjective evaluations of the results indicate that the method of this dissertation exhibits much smaller forward-path delays with superior howling suppression capability

    Design and Implementation of Control Techniques of Power Electronic Interfaces for Photovoltaic Power Systems

    The aim of this thesis is to scrutinize and develop four state-of-the-art power electronics converter control techniques utilized in various photovoltaic (PV) power conversion schemes accounting for maximum power extraction and efficiency. First, Cascade Proportional and Integral (PI) Controller-Based Robust Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) of a DC-DC boost converter has been designed and investigated. Non-minimum phase behaviour of the boost converter due to right half plane zero constitutes a challenge and its non-linear dynamics complicate the control process while operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM). The proposed control scheme efficiently resolved complications and challenges by using features of cascade PI control loop in combination with properties of MRAC. The accuracy of the proposed control system’s ability to track the desired signals and regulate the plant process variables in the most beneficial and optimised way without delay and overshoot is verified. The experimental results and analysis reveal that the proposed control strategy enhanced the tracking speed two times with considerably improved disturbance rejection. Second, (P)roportional Gain (R)esonant and Gain Scheduled (P)roportional (PR-P) Controller has been designed and investigated. The aim of this controller is to create a variable perturbation size real-time adaptive perturb and observe (P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm. The proposed control scheme resolved the drawbacks of conventional P&O MPPT method associated with the use of constant perturbation size that leads to a poor transient response and high continuous steady-state oscillations. The prime objective of using the PR-P controller is to utilize inherited properties of the signal produced by the controller’s resonant path and integrate it to update best estimated perturbation that represents the working principle of extremum seeking control (ESC) to use in a P&O algorithm that characterizes the overall system learning-based real time adaptive (RTA). Additionally, utilization of internal dynamics of the PR-P controller overcome the challenges namely, complexity, computational burden, implantation cost and slow tracking performance in association with commonly used soft computing intelligent systems and adaptive control strategies. The experimental results and analysis reveal that the proposed control strategy enhanced the tracking speed five times with reduced steady-state oscillations around maximum power point (MPP) and more than 99% energy extracting efficiency.Third, the interleaved buck converter based photovoltaic (PV) emulator current control has been investigated. A proportional-resonant-proportional (PR-P) controller is designed to resolve the drawbacks of conventional PI controllers in terms of phase management which means balancing currents evenly between active phases to avoid thermally stressing and provide optimal ripple cancellation in the presence of parameter uncertainties. The proposed controller shows superior performance in terms of 10 times faster-converging transient response, zero steady-state error with significant reduction in current ripple. Equal load sharing that constitutes the primary concern in multi-phase converters has been achieved with the proposed controller. Implementing of robust control theory involving comprehensive time and frequency domain analysis reveals 13% improvement in the robust stability margin and 12-degree bigger phase toleration with the PR-P controller. Fourth, a symmetrical pole placement Method-based Unity Proportional Gain Resonant and Gain Scheduled Proportional (PR-P) Controller has been designed and investigated. The proposed PR-P controller resolved the issues associated with the use of the PI controller which are tracking repeating control input signal with zero steady-state and mitigating the 3rd order harmonic component injected into the grid for single-phase PV systems. Additionally, the PR-P controller has overcome the drawbacks of frequency detuning in the grid and increase in the magnitude of odd number harmonics in the system that constitute the common concerns in the implementation of conventional PR controller. Moreover, the unprecedented design process based on changing notch filter dynamics with symmetrical pole placement around resonant frequency overcomes the limitations that are essentially complexity and dependency on the precisely modelled system. The verification and validation process of the proposed control schemes has been conducted using MATLAB/Simulink and implementing MATLAB/Simulink/State flow on dSPACE Real-time-interface (RTI) 1007 processor, DS2004 High-Speed A/D and CP4002 Timing and Digital I/O boards

    Fast and Robust Real-Time Estimation of Respiratory Rate from Photoplethysmography

    Respiratory rate (RR) is a useful vital sign that can not only provide auxiliary information on physiological changes within the human body, but also indicate early symptoms of various diseases. Recently, methods for the estimation of RR from photoplethysmography (PPG) have attracted increased interest, because PPG can be readily recorded using wearable sensors such as smart watches and smart bands. In the present study, we propose a new method for the fast and robust real-time estimation of RR using an adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) notch filter, which has not yet been applied to the PPG-based estimation of RR. In our offline simulation study, the performance of the proposed method was compared to that of recently developed RR estimation methods called an adaptive lattice-type RR estimator and a Smart Fusion. The results of the simulation study show that the proposed method could not only estimate RR more quickly and more accurately than the conventional methods, but also is most suitable for online RR monitoring systems, as it does not use any overlapping moving windows that require increased computational costs.     thesisThis research work presents a novel way of realizing an adaptive noise canceler as a notch filter completely in the analog domain. The obvious advantage of using an adaptive notch filter would be the capability of tracking the exact frequency of interference as well as the ability to control the width of the null. The device will hereafter be referred to as the carrier canceler, as it will be used to track and cancel a 54.1 MHz carrier used in the Telescope Array RAdar (TARA) project, in southern Utah, for the detection of cosmic rays. The carrier canceler operates on a dual 5V power supply. The circuit has two inputs: An input from a signal generator that feeds a clean 54.1 MHz carrier reference and the second input, which is fed from the antenna at the receiver station of the TARA project. The circuit consists of a two tap Least Mean Square adaptive circuit that tracks the carrier frequency and phase to generate a clean replica of the carrier. This replica is then subtracted from the received signal to remove the carrier from it. The circuit is first tested in controlled conditions in the laboratory and then tested in the field. The results show the circuit has a null depth of 45 dB or better and has a 3 dB bandwidth of 300 Hz. Implementation issues such as DC offset of the multiplier Integrated Circuit (IC) and phase shift of all the ICs are discussed and a solution to rectify them is proposed
