    Wideband data-independent beamforming for subarrays

    The desire to operate large antenna arrays for e.g. RADAR applications over a wider frequency range is currently limited by the hardware, which due to weight, cost and size only permits complex multipliers behind each element. In contrast, wideband processing would have to rely on tap delay lines enabling digital filters for every element.As an intermediate step, in this thesis we consider a design where elements are grouped into subarrays, within which elements are still individually controlled by narrowband complex weights, but where each subarray output is given a tap delay line or finite impulse response digital filter for further wideband processing. Firstly, this thesis explores how a tap delay line attached to every subarray can be designed as a delay-and-sum beamformer. This filter is set to realised a fractional delay design based on a windowed sinc function. At the element level, we show that designing a narrowband beam w.r.t. a centre frequency of wideband operation is suboptimal,and suggest an optimisation technique that can yield sufficiently accurate gain over a frequency band of interest for an arbitrary look direction, which however comes at the cost of reduced aperture efficiency, as well as significantly increased sidelobes. We also suggest an adaptive method to enhance the frequency characteristic of a partial wideband array design, by utilising subarrays pointing in different directions in different frequency bands - resolved by means of a filter bank - to adaptively suppress undesired components in the beam patterns of the subarrays. Finally, the thesis proposes a novel array design approach obtained by rotational tiling of subarrays such that the overall array aperture is densely constructed from the same geometric subarray by rotation and translation only. Since the grating lobes of differently oriented subarrays do not necessarily align, an effective grating lobe attenuation w.r.t. the main beam is achieved. Based on a review of findings from geometry,a number of designs are highlight and transformed into numerical examples, and the theoretically expected grating lobe suppression is compared to uniformly spaced arrays.Supported by a number of models and simulations, the thesis thus suggests various numerical and hardware design techniques, mainly the addition of tap-delay-line per subarray and some added processing overhead, that can help to construct a large partial wideband array close in wideband performance to currently existing hardware.The desire to operate large antenna arrays for e.g. RADAR applications over a wider frequency range is currently limited by the hardware, which due to weight, cost and size only permits complex multipliers behind each element.     Impairments in ground moving target indicator (GMTI) radar

    Radars on multiple distributed airborne or ground based moving platforms are of increasing interest, since they can be deployed in close proximity to the event under investigation and thus offer remarkable sensing opportunities. Ground moving target indicator (GMTI) detects and localizes moving targets in the presence of ground clutter and other interference sources. Space-time adaptive processing (STAP) implemented with antenna arrays has been a classical approach to clutter cancellation in airborne radar. One of the challenges with STAP is that the minimum detectable velocity (MDV) of targets is a function of the baseline of the antenna array: the larger the baseline (i.e., the narrower the beam), the lower the MDV. Unfortunately, increasing the baseline of a uniform linear array (ULA) entails a commensurate increase in the number of elements. An alternative approach to increasing the resolution of a radar, is to use a large, but sparse, random array. The proliferation of relatively inexpensive autonomous sensing vehicles, such as unmanned airborne systems, raises the question whether is it possible to carry out GMTI by distributed airborne platforms. A major obstacle to implementing distributed GMTI is the synchronization of autonomous moving sensors. For range processing, GMTI processing relies on synchronized sampling of the signals received at the array, while STAP processing requires time, frequency and phase synchronization for beamforming and interference cancellation. Distributed sensors have independent oscillators, which are naturally not synchronized and are each subject to different stochastic phase drift. Each sensor has its own local oscillator, unlike a traditional array in which all sensors are connected to the same local oscillator. Even when tuned to the same frequency, phase errors between the sensors will develop over time, due to phase instabilities. These phase errors affect a distributed STAP system. In this dissertation, a distributed STAP application in which sensors are moving autonomously is envisioned. The problems of tracking, detection for our proposed architecture are of important. The first part focuses on developing a direct tracking approach to multiple targets by distributed radar sensors. A challenging scenario of a distributed multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar system (as shown above), in which relatively simple moving sensors send observations to a fusion center where most of the baseband processing is performed, is presented. The sensors are assumed to maintain time synchronization, but are not phase synchronized. The conventional approach to localization by distributed sensors is to estimate intermediate parameters from the received signals, for example time delay or the angle of arrival. Subsequently, these parameters are used to deduce the location and velocity of the target(s). These classical localization techniques are referred to as indirect localization. Recently, new techniques have been developed capable of estimating target location directly from signal measurements, without an intermediate estimation step. The objective is to develop a direct tracking algorithm for multiple moving targets. It is aimed to develop a direct tracking algorithm of targets state parameters using widely distributed moving sensors for multiple moving targets. Potential candidate for the tracker include Extended Kalman Filter. In the second part of the dissertation,the effect of phase noise on space-time adaptive processing in general, and spatial processing in particular is studied. A power law model is assumed for the phase noise. It is shown that a composite model with several terms is required to properly model the phase noise. It is further shown that the phase noise has almost linear trajectories. The effect of phase noise on spatial processing is analyzed. Simulation results illustrate the effect of phase noise on degrading the performance in terms of beam pattern and receiver operating characteristics. A STAP application, in which spatial processing is performed (together with Doppler processing) over a coherent processing interval, is envisioned

    Waveform Diversity and Range-Coupled Adaptive Radar Signal Processing

    Waveform diversity may offer several benefits to radar systems though often at the cost of reduced sensitivity. Multi-dimensional processing schemes are known to offer many degrees of freedom, which can be exploited to suppress the ambiguity inherent to pulse compression, array processing, and Doppler frequency estimation. Spatial waveform diversity can be achieved by transmitting different but correlated waveforms from each element of an antenna array. A simple yet effective scheme is employed to transmit different waveforms in different spatial directions. A new reiterative minimum mean squared error approach entitled Space-Range Adaptive Processing, which adapts simultaneously in range and angle, is derived and shown in simulation to offer enhanced performance when spatial waveform diversity is employed relative to both conventional matched filtering and sequentially adapting in angle and then range. The same mathematical framework is utilized to develop Time-Range Adaptive Processing (TRAP) algorithm which is capable of simultaneously adapting in Doppler frequency and range. TRAP is useful when pulse-to-pulse changing of the center frequency or waveform coding is used to achieve enhanced range resolution or unambiguous ranging, respectively. The inherent computational complexity of the new multi-dimensional algorithms is addressed by segmenting the full-dimension cost functions, yielding a reduced-dimensional variants of each. Finally, a non-adaptive approach based on the multi-dimensional TRAP signal model is utilized to develop an efficient clutter cancellation technique capable of suppressing multiple range intervals of clutter when waveform diversity is applied to pulse-Doppler radar

    Interference Mitigation Effects on Synthetic Aperture Radar Coherent Data Products

    Both radio frequency interference from sources external to the synthetic aperture radar system and techniques to mitigate radio frequency interference can degrade the quality of the image products. Often it is the second order data products derived from the images that are of the most value for a synthetic aperture radar system. Preserving the quality of these data products, in the presence of radio frequency interference, is paramount to maintaining the utility of the sensor.This dissertation examines the effects of interference mitigation upon coherent data products of fine-resolution, high frequency synthetic aperture radars using stretch processing. Novel interference mitigation techniques are introduced that operate on single or multiple apertures of data that increase average coherence compared to existing techniques. A novel contrast metric is combined with existing image quality and average coherence metrics to compare multiple mitigation techniques.     Three Dimensional Bistatic Tomography Using HDTV

    The thesis begins with a review of the principles of diffraction and reflection tomography; starting with the analytic solution to the inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation, after linearization by the Born approximation (the weak scatterer solution), and arriving at the Filtered Back Projection (Propagation) method of reconstruction. This is followed by a heuristic derivation more directly couched in the radar imaging context, without the rigor of the general inverse problem solution and more closely resembling an imaging turntable or inverse synthetic aperture radar. The heuristic derivation leads into the concept of the line integral and projections (the Radon Transform), followed by more general geometries where the plane wave approximation is invalid. We proceed next to study of the dependency of reconstruction on the space-frequency trajectory, combining the spatial aperture and waveform. Two and three dimensional apertures, monostatic and bistatic, fully and sparsely sampled and including partial apertures, with controlled waveforms (CW and pulsed, with and without modulation) define the filling of k-space and concomitant reconstruction performance. Theoretical developments in the first half of the thesis are applied to the specific example of bistatic tomographic imaging using High Definition Television (HDTV); the United States version of DVB-T. Modeling of the HDTV waveform using pseudonoise modulation to represent the hybrid 8VSB HDTV scheme and the move-stop-move approximation established the imaging potential, employing an idealized, isotropic 18 scatterer. As the move-stop-move approximation places a limitation on integration time (in cross correlation/pulse compression) due to transmitter/receiver motion, an exact solution for compensation of Doppler distortion is derived. The concept is tested with the assembly and flight test of a bistatic radar system employing software-defined radios (SDR). A three dimensional, bistatic collection aperture, exploiting an elevated commercial HDTV transmitter, is focused to demonstrate the principle. This work, to the best of our knowledge, represents a first in the formation of three dimensional images using bistatically-exploited television transmitters

    Mapping of Ice Sheet Deep Layers and Fast Outlet Glaciers with Multi-Channel-High-Sensitivity Radar

    This dissertation discusses the waveform design, the development of SAR and clutter reduction algorithms for MCRDS radars that are developed at CReSIS to map the ice-sheet bed, deep internal layers and fast-flowing outlet glaciers. It is verified with survey data that the sidelobe level of the designed tapered linear chirp waveform is lower than -60dB for reliable detection of deep ice layers close to the bed. The SAR processing is implemented in f-k domain with motion compensation. Very weak echoes from the deepest parts of Jakobshavn channel are detected for the first time using large synthetic aperture length. A beam-spaced clutter-reduction algorithm is developed to reduce the distributed across-track ice clutter encountered in sounding fast outlet glaciers by estimating the clutter power as a function of depth. On average this method is able to reduce ice clutter by 10dB over Hanning weighting with the MCRDS radar's multi-channel data

    Novel solutions to classical signal processing problems in optimization framework

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Novel approaches for three classical signal processing problems in optimization framework are proposed to provide further flexibility and performance improvement. In the first part, a new technique, which uses Hermite-Gaussian (HG) functions, is developed for analysis of signals, whose components have non-overlapping compact time-frequency supports. Once the support of each signal component is properly transformed, HG functions provide optimal representations. Conducted experiments show that proposed method provides reliable identification and extraction of signal components even under severe noise cases. In the second part, three different approaches are proposed for designing a set of orthogonal pulse shapes for ultra-wideband communication systems with wideband antennas. Each pulse shape is modelled as a linear combination of time shifted and scaled HG functions. By solving the constructed optimization problems, high energy pulse shapes, which maintain orthogonality at the receiver with desired timefrequency characteristics are obtained. Moreover, by showing that, derivatives of HG functions can be represented as a linear combination of HGs, a simple optimal correlating receiver structure is proposed. In the third part, two different methods for phase-only control of array antennas based on semidefinite modelling are proposed. First, antenna pattern design problem is formulated as a non-convex quadratically constraint quadratic problem (QCQP). Then, by relaxing the QCQP formulation, a convex semidefinite problem (SDP) is obtained. For moderate size arrays, a novel iterative rank refinement algorithm is proposed to achieve a rank-1 solution for the obtained SDP, which is the solution to the original QCQP formulation. For large arrays an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) based solution is developed.     Multibeam radar system based on waveform diversity for RF seeker applications

    Existing radiofrequency (RF) seekers use mechanically steerable antennas. In order to improve the robustness and performance of the missile seeker, current research is investigating the replacement of mechanical 2D antennas with active electronically controlled 3D antenna arrays capable of steering much faster and more accurately than existing solutions. 3D antenna arrays provide increased radar coverage, as a result of the conformal shape and flexible beam steering in all directions. Therefore, additional degrees of freedom can be exploited to develop a multifunctional seeker, a very sophisticated sensor that can perform multiple simultaneous tasks and meet spectral allocation requirements. This thesis presents a novel radar configuration, named multibeam radar (MBR), to generate multiple beams in transmission by means of waveform diversity. MBR systems based on waveform diversity require a set of orthogonal waveforms in order to generate multiple channels in transmission and extract them efficiently at the receiver with digital signal processing. The advantage is that MBR transmit differently designed waveforms in arbitrary directions so that waveforms can be selected to provide multiple radar functions and better manage the available resources. An analytical model of an MBR is derived to analyse the relationship between individual channels and their performance in terms of isolation and phase steering effects. Combinations of linear frequency modulated (LFM) waveforms are investigated and the analytical expressions of the isolation between adjacent channels are presented for rectangular and Gaussian amplitude modulated LFM signals with different bandwidths, slopes and frequency offsets. The theoretical results have been tested experimentally to corroborate the isolation properties of the proposed waveforms. In addition, the practical feasibility of the MBR concept has been proved with a radar test bed with two orthogonal channels simultaneously detecting a moving target

    Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing multiple-input multiple-output automotive radar with novel signal processing algorithms

    Advanced driver assistance systems that actively assist the driver based on environment perception achieved significant advances in recent years. Along with this development, autonomous driving became a major research topic that aims ultimately at development of fully automated, driverless vehicles. Since such applications rely on environment perception, their ever increasing sophistication imposes growing demands on environmental sensors. Specifically, the need for reliable environment sensing necessitates the development of more sophisticated, high-performance radar sensors. A further vital challenge in terms of increased radar interference arises with the growing market penetration of the vehicular radar technology. To address these challenges, in many respects novel approaches and radar concepts are required. As the modulation is one of the key factors determining the radar performance, the research of new modulation schemes for automotive radar becomes essential. A topic that emerged in the last years is the radar operating with digitally generated waveforms based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Initially, the use of OFDM for radar was motivated by the combination of radar with communication via modulation of the radar waveform with communication data. Some subsequent works studied the use of OFDM as a modulation scheme in many different radar applications - from adaptive radar processing to synthetic aperture radar. This suggests that the flexibility provided by OFDM based digital generation of radar waveforms can potentially enable novel radar concepts that are well suited for future automotive radar systems. This thesis aims to explore the perspectives of OFDM as a modulation scheme for high-performance, robust and adaptive automotive radar. To this end, novel signal processing algorithms and OFDM based radar concepts are introduced in this work. The main focus of the thesis is on high-end automotive radar applications, while the applicability for real time implementation is of primary concern. The first part of this thesis focuses on signal processing algorithms for distance-velocity estimation. As a foundation for the algorithms presented in this thesis, a novel and rigorous signal model for OFDM radar is introduced. Based on this signal model, the limitations of the state-of-the-art OFDM radar signal processing are pointed out. To overcome these limitations, we propose two novel signal processing algorithms that build upon the conventional processing and extend it by more sophisticated modeling of the radar signal. The first method named all-cell Doppler compensation (ACDC) overcomes the Doppler sensitivity problem of OFDM radar. The core idea of this algorithm is the scenario-independent correction of Doppler shifts for the entire measurement signal. Since Doppler effect is a major concern for OFDM radar and influences the radar parametrization, its complete compensation opens new perspectives for OFDM radar. It not only achieves an improved, Doppler-independent performance, it also enables more favorable system parametrization. The second distance-velocity estimation algorithm introduced in this thesis addresses the issue of range and Doppler frequency migration due to the target’s motion during the measurement. For the conventional radar signal processing, these migration effects set an upper limit on the simultaneously achievable distance and velocity resolution. The proposed method named all-cell migration compensation (ACMC) extends the underlying OFDM radar signal model to account for the target motion. As a result, the effect of migration is compensated implicitly for the entire radar measurement, which leads to an improved distance and velocity resolution. Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in overcoming the two major limitations of the conventional OFDM radar signal processing. As multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is a well-established technology for improving the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, the second part of this work studies the multiplexing methods for OFDM radar that enable simultaneous use of multiple transmit antennas for MIMO radar processing. After discussing the drawbacks of known multiplexing methods, we introduce two advanced multiplexing schemes for OFDM-MIMO radar based on non-equidistant interleaving of OFDM subcarriers. These multiplexing approaches exploit the multicarrier structure of OFDM for generation of orthogonal waveforms that enable a simultaneous operation of multiple MIMO channels occupying the same bandwidth. The primary advantage of these methods is that despite multiplexing they maintain all original radar parameters (resolution and unambiguous range in distance and velocity) for each individual MIMO channel. To obtain favorable interleaving patterns with low sidelobes, we propose an optimization approach based on genetic algorithms. Furthermore, to overcome the drawback of increased sidelobes due to subcarrier interleaving, we study the applicability of sparse processing methods for the distance-velocity estimation from measurements of non-equidistantly interleaved OFDM-MIMO radar. We introduce a novel sparsity based frequency estimation algorithm designed for this purpose. The third topic addressed in this work is the robustness of OFDM radar to interference from other radar sensors. In this part of the work we study the interference robustness of OFDM radar and propose novel interference mitigation techniques. The first interference suppression algorithm we introduce exploits the robustness of OFDM to narrowband interference by dropping subcarriers strongly corrupted by interference from evaluation. To avoid increase of sidelobes due to missing subcarriers, their values are reconstructed from the neighboring ones based on linear prediction methods. As a further measure for increasing the interference robustness in a more universal manner, we propose the extension of OFDM radar with cognitive features. We introduce the general concept of cognitive radar that is capable of adapting to the current spectral situation for avoiding interference. Our work focuses mainly on waveform adaptation techniques; we propose adaptation methods that allow dynamic interference avoidance without affecting adversely the estimation performance. The final part of this work focuses on prototypical implementation of OFDM-MIMO radar. With the constructed prototype, the feasibility of OFDM for high-performance radar applications is demonstrated. Furthermore, based on this radar prototype the algorithms presented in this thesis are validated experimentally. The measurements confirm the applicability of the proposed algorithms and concepts for real world automotive radar implementations

    Coherent Change Detection Under a Forest Canopy

    Coherent change detection (CCD) is an established technique for remotely monitoring landscapes with minimal vegetation or buildings. By evaluating the local complex correlation between a pair of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired on repeat passes of an airborne or spaceborne imaging radar system, a map of the scene coherence is obtained. Subtle disturbances of the ground are detected as areas of low coherence in the surface clutter. This thesis investigates extending CCD to monitor the ground in a forest. It is formulated as a multichannel dual-layer coherence estimation problem, where the coherence of scattering from the ground is estimated after suppressing interference from the canopy by vertically beamforming multiple image channels acquired at slightly different grazing angles on each pass. This 3D SAR beamforming must preserve the phase of the ground response. The choice of operating wavelength is considered in terms of the trade-off between foliage penetration and change sensitivity. A framework for comparing the performance of different radar designs and beamforming algorithms, as well as assessing the sensitivity to error, is built around the random-volume-over-ground (RVOG) model of forest scattering. If the ground and volume scattering contributions in the received echo are of similar strength, it is shown that an L-band array of just three channels can provide enough volume attenuation to permit reasonable estimation of the ground coherence. The proposed method is demonstrated using an RVOG clutter simulation and a modified version of the physics-based SAR image simulator PolSARproSim. Receiver operating characteristics show that whilst ordinary single-channel CCD is unusable when a canopy is present, 3D SAR CCD permits reasonable detection performance. A novel polarimetric filtering algorithm is also proposed to remove contributions from the ground-trunk double-bounce scattering mechanism, which may mask changes on the ground near trees. To enable this kind of polarimetric processing, fully polarimetric data must be acquired and calibrated. Motivated by an interim version of the Ingara airborne imaging radar, which used a pair of helical antennas to acquire circularly polarised data, techniques for the estimation of polarimetric distortion in the circular basis are investigated. It is shown that the standard approach to estimating cross-talk in the linear basis, whereby expressions for the distortion of reflection-symmetric clutter are linearised and solved, cannot be adapted to the circular basis, because the first-order effects of individual cross-talk parameters cannot be distinguished. An alternative approach is proposed that uses ordinary and gridded trihedral corner reflectors, and optionally dihedrals, to iteratively estimate the channel imbalance and cross-talk parameters. Monte Carlo simulations show that the method reliably converges to the true parameter values. Ingara data is calibrated using the method, with broadly consistent parameter estimates obtained across flights. Genuine scene changes may be masked by coherence loss that arises when the bands of spatial frequencies supported by the two passes do not match. Trimming the spatial-frequency bands to their common area of support would remove these uncorrelated contributions, but the bands, and therefore the required trim, depend on the effective collection geometry at each pixel position. The precise dependence on local slope and collection geometry is derived in this thesis. Standard methods of SAR image formation use a flat focal plane and allow only a single global trim, which leads to spatially varying coherence loss when the terrain is undulating. An image-formation algorithm is detailed that exploits the flexibility offered by back-projection not only to focus the image onto a surface matched to the scene topography but also to allow spatially adaptive trimming.
