    Get PDF
The dynamic model of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy system is subjected to nonlinear dynamics, uncertainties, and external disturbances. In the presence of such nonlinear effects, a high-performance control system is required to guarantee the smooth and maximum power transfer from the wind energy system to the ac grids. This paper proposes a novel fractional order adaptive terminal sliding mode control system for both the rotor and grid side converters of the DFIG system. The stability of the closed loop is ensured using the fractional order Lyapunov theorem. Numerical results are presented to show the superiority of the proposed control method over the classical sliding mode control system and the proportional integral controllers

Maximum power extraction from wind turbines using a fault-tolerant fractional-order nonsingular terminal sliding mode controller

This work presents a nonlinear control approach to maximise the power extraction of wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) operating below their rated wind speeds. Due to nonlinearities associated with the dynamics of WECSs, the stochastic nature of wind, and the inevitable presence of faults in practice, developing reliable fault-tolerant control strategies to guarantee maximum power production of WECSs has always been considered important. A fault-tolerant fractional-order nonsingular terminal sliding mode control (FNTSMC) strategy to maximize the captured power of wind turbines (WT) subjected to actuator faults is developed. A nonsingular terminal sliding surface is proposed to ensure fast finite-time convergence, whereas the incorporation of fractional calculus in the controller enhances the convergence speed of system states and simultaneously suppresses chattering, resulting in extracted power maximisation by precisely tracking the optimum rotor speed. Closed-loop stability is analysed and validated through the Lyapunov stability criterion. Comparative numerical simulation analysis is carried out on a two-mass WT, and superior power production performance of the proposed method over other methods is demonstrated, both in fault-free and faulty situations

Introduction. Recently, wind power generation has grown at an alarming rate in the past decade and will continue to do so as power electronic technology continues to advance. Purpose. Super-twisting sliding mode control for brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator based on wind energy conversion system. Methods. This paper deals with the robust power control of a grid-connected brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator driven by the variable speed wind turbine using a variable structure control theory called sliding mode control. The traditional sliding mode approach produces an unpleasant chattering phenomenon that could harm the system. To eliminate chattering, it is necessary to employ a high-order sliding mode controller. The super-twisting algorithm is one type of nonlinear control presented in order to ensure the effectiveness of the control structure we tested these controllers in two different ways reference tracking, and robustness. Results. Simulation results using MATLAB/Simulink have demonstrated the effectiveness and robustness of the super-twisting sliding mode controller.

Wind energy is the most efficient and advanced form of renewable energy (RE) in recent decades, and an effective controller is required to regulate the power generated by wind energy. This study provides an overview of state-of-the-art control strategies for wind energy conversion systems (WECS). Studies on the pitch angle controller, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller, the machine side controller (MSC), and the grid side controller (GSC) are reviewed and discussed. Related works are analyzed, including evolution, software used, input and output parameters, specifications, merits, and limitations of different control techniques. The analysis shows that better performance can be obtained by the adaptive and soft-computing based pitch angle controller and MPPT controller, the field-oriented control for MSC, and the voltage-oriented control for GSC. This study provides an appropriate benchmark for further wind energy research

Hybrid MPPT Control: P&O and Neural Network for Wind Energy Conversion System

In the field of wind turbine performance optimization, many techniques are employed to track the maximum power point (MPPT), one of the most commonly used MPPT algorithms is the perturb and observe technique (PO) because of its ease of implementation. However, the main disadvantage of this method is the lack of accuracy due to fluctuations around the maximum power point. In contrast, MPPT control employing neural networks proved to be an effective solution, in terms of accuracy. The contribution of this work is to propose a hybrid maximum power point tracking control using two types of MPPT control: neural network control (NNC) and the perturbation and observe method (PO), thus the PO method can offer better performance. Furthermore, this study aims to provide a comparison of the hybrid method with each algorithm and NNC. At the resulting duty cycle of the 2 methods, we applied the combination operation. A DC-DC boost converter is subjected to the hybrid MPPT control.  This converter is part of a wind energy conversion system employing a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The chain is modeled using MATLAB/Simulink software. The effectiveness of the controller is tested at varying wind speeds. In terms of the Integral time absolute error (ITAE), using the PO technique, the ITAE is 9.72. But, if we apply the suggested technique, it is smaller at 4.55. The corresponding simulation results show that the proposed hybrid method performs best compared to the PO method. Simulation results ensure the performance of the proposed hybrid MPPT control.

A robust super twisting fractional-order sliding mode-based control of vehicle longitudinal dynamic subjected to a constant actuator fault

This paper deals with the design and analysis of a super twisting fractional-order sliding mode controller (ST-FOSMC) to adjust the vehicle longitudinal dynamic when braking. While vehicle loading, road types, and modeling uncertainties are time-varying parameters, the control law must be robust against these disturbances. Also, the aging of the brake plate may introduce a difference between the control output and the actuator response that should be considered. The proposed control strategy has been used to enable the anti-lock braking system (ABS) to track the desired wheel slip value despite the presence of disturbances and constant actuator fault. The design of this controller is presented and the system stability is guaranteed by applying the Lyapunov theory. We carried out a simulation example that makes a comparison between our controller and the one based on the fractional-order sliding mode control to investigate which one of them outperforms the other. The results exhibit the superiority of the super twisting fractional order controller over the traditional fractional-order sliding mode controller during the braking phase

This paper proposes a novel integral backstepping-based nonlinear control strategy for a grid-connected wind-photovoltaic hybrid system. Firstly, detailed three-phase models of the hybrid system elements are presented, and then an overall state-space model is derived. Secondly, nonlinear control laws for the hybrid system’s converters are developed with the aim of ensuring maximum extraction of the available renewable energy, stabilizing the DC bus voltage and guaranteeing the operation of the hybrid system at unity power factor. The overall stability of the closed-loop system is demonstrated on the basis of Lyapunov’s stability theory. Comprehensive simulations, using the MATLAB/Simulink software environment, are carried out to assess the effectiveness of the proposed control methodology. The simulation results obtained confirm that the proposed control strategy offers high efficiency in various operating modes of the hybrid generation system

Discrete-time integral terminal sliding mode based maximum power point controller for the PMSG-based wind energy system

    Get PDF
This study proposes a discrete-time integral terminal sliding mode controller (DITSMC) integrated with a sensorless maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method for a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind energy conversion system (WECS). The effects of the parameters of the proposed DITSMC on the convergence-time and the error-bound are investigated by the simulation studies. The dynamic performance of the DITSMC has been evaluated experimentally on a test bench for step-type wind changes. The optimum coefficient between the output voltage of the generator and the extracted power from the WECS is determined only for a wind speed by offline studies. Then, the MPPT can be provided using this coefficient for all wind speeds in the operating range of the WECS without any mechanical sensor. Additionally, the experimental studies show that DITSMC has better performance than the PI controller in terms of the settling time and thus the efficiency of the WECS
