    Fractional Order Fault Tolerant Control - A Survey

    In this paper, a comprehensive review of recent advances and trends regarding Fractional Order Fault Tolerant Control (FOFTC) design is presented. This novel robust control approach has been emerging in the last decade and is still gathering great research efforts mainly because of its promising results and outcomes. The purpose of this study is to provide a useful overview for researchers interested in developing this interesting solution for plants that are subject to faults and disturbances with an obligation for a maintained performance level. Throughout the paper, the various works related to FOFTC in literature are categorized first by considering their research objective between fault detection with diagnosis and fault tolerance with accommodation, and second by considering the nature of the studied plants depending on whether they are modelized by integer order or fractional order models. One of the main drawbacks of these approaches lies in the increase in complexity associated with introducing the fractional operators, their approximation and especially during the stability analysis. A discussion on the main disadvantages and challenges that face this novel fractional order robust control research field is given in conjunction with motivations for its future development. This study provides a simulation example for the application of a FOFTC against actuator faults in a Boeing 747 civil transport aircraft is provided to illustrate the efficiency of such robust control strategies

    Fully distributed consensus for high-order strict-feedback nonlinear multiagent systems with switched topologies

    summary:This paper studies the distributed consensus problem of high-order strict-feedback nonlinear multiagent systems. By employing the adaptive backstepping technique and switched system theory, a novel protocol is proposed for MASs with switched topologies. Global information such as the number of agents and communication topology is not used. In addition, the communication topology between agents can be switched between possible topologies at any time. Based on the Lyapunov function method, the proposed adaptive protocol guarantees the complete consensus of multiagent systems without restricting the dwell time of the switched signal. Finally, two numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness and advantages of the given protocol

    Adaptive Fault-Tolerant Formation Control for Quadrotors with Actuator Faults

    In this paper, we investigate the fault-tolerant formation control of a group of quadrotor aircrafts with a leader. Continuous fault-tolerant formation control protocol is constructed by using adaptive updating mechanism and boundary layer theory to compensate actuator fault. Results show that the desired formation pattern and trajectory under actuator fault can be achieved using the proposed fault-tolerant formation control. A simulation is conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the method

    Adaptive sliding mode observation in a network of dynamical systems

    This paper considers the problem of reconstructing state information in all the nodes of a complex network of dynamical systems. The individual nodes comprise a known linear part and unknown but bounded uncertainties in certain channels of the system. A supervisory adaptive sliding mode observer conļ¬guration is proposed for estimating the states. A linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is suggested to synthesise the gains of the sliding mode observer. Although deployed centrally to estimate all the states of the complex network, the design process depends only on the dynamics of an individual node of the network. The methodology is demonstrated by considering a network of Chua oscillators

    Robust fault tolerant control of induction motor system

    Research into fault tolerant control (FTC, a set of techniques that are developed to increase plant availability and reduce the risk of safety hazards) for induction motors is motivated by practical concerns including the need for enhanced reliability, improved maintenance operations and reduced cost. Its aim is to prevent that simple faults develop into serious failure. Although, the subject of induction motor control is well known, the main topics in the literature are concerned with scalar and vector control and structural stability. However, induction machines experience various fault scenarios and to meet the above requirements FTC strategies based on existing or more advanced control methods become desirable. Some earlier studies on FTC have addressed particular problems of 3-phase sensor current/voltage FTC, torque FTC, etc. However, the development of these methods lacks a more general understanding of the overall problem of FTC for an induction motor based on a true fault classification of possible fault types.In order to develop a more general approach to FTC for induction motors, i.e. not just designing specific control approaches for individual induction motor fault scenarios, this thesis has carried out a systematic research on induction motor systems considering the various faults that can typically be present, having either ā€œadditiveā€ fault or ā€œmultiplicativeā€ effects on the system dynamics, according to whether the faults are sensor or actuator (additive fault) types or component or motor faults (multiplicative fault) types.To achieve the required objectives, an active approach to FTC is used, making use of fault estimation (FE, an approach that determine the magnitude of a fault signal online) and fault compensation. This approach of FTC/FE considers an integration of the electrical and mechanical dynamics, initially using adaptive and/or sliding mode observers, Linear Parameter Varying (LPV, in which nonlinear systems are locally decomposed into several linear systems scheduled by varying parameters) and then using back-stepping control combined with observer/estimation methods for handling certain forms of nonlinearity.In conclusion, the thesis proposed an integrated research of induction motor FTC/FE with the consideration of different types of faults and different types of uncertainties, and validated the approaches through simulations and experiments

    Review of selection criteria for sensor and actuator configurations suitable for internal combustion engines

    This literature review considers the problem of finding a suitable configuration of sensors and actuators for the control of an internal combustion engine. It takes a look at the methods, algorithms, processes, metrics, applications, research groups and patents relevant for this topic. Several formal metric have been proposed, but practical use remains limited. Maximal information criteria are theoretically optimal for selecting sensors, but hard to apply to a system as complex and nonlinear as an engine. Thus, we reviewed methods applied to neighboring fields including nonlinear systems and non-minimal phase systems. Furthermore, the closed loop nature of control means that information is not the only consideration, and speed, stability and robustness have to be considered. The optimal use of sensor information also requires the use of models, observers, state estimators or virtual sensors, and practical acceptance of these remains limited. Simple control metrics such as conditioning number are popular, mostly because they need fewer assumptions than closed-loop metrics, which require a full plant, disturbance and goal model. Overall, no clear consensus can be found on the choice of metrics to define optimal control configurations, with physical measures, linear algebra metrics and modern control metrics all being used. Genetic algorithms and multi-criterial optimisation were identified as the most widely used methods for optimal sensor selection, although addressing the dimensionality and complexity of formulating the problem remains a challenge. This review does present a number of different successful approaches for specific applications domains, some of which may be applicable to diesel engines and other automotive applications. For a thorough treatment, non-linear dynamics and uncertainties need to be considered together, which requires sophisticated (non-Gaussian) stochastic models to establish the value of a control architecture

    Privatized distributed anomaly detection for large-scale nonlinear uncertain systems

    In this article two limitations in current distributed model based approaches for anomaly detection in large-scale uncertain nonlinear systems are addressed. The first limitation regards the high conservativeness of deterministic detection thresholds, against which a novel family of set-based thresholds is proposed. Such set-based thresholds are defined in a way to guarantee robustness in a user-defined probabilistic sense, rather than a deterministic sense. They are obtained by solving a chance-constrained optimization problem, thanks to a randomization technique based on the Scenario Approach. The second limitation regards the requirement, in distributed anomaly detection architectures, for different parties to regularly communicate local measurements. In settings where these parties want to preserve their privacy, communication may be undesirable. In order to preserve privacy and still allow for distributed detection to be implemented, a novel privacy-preserving mechanism is proposed and a so-called privatized communication protocol is introduced. Theoretical guarantees on the achievable level of privacy, along with a characterization of the robustness properties of the proposed distributed threshold set design, taking into account the privatized communication scheme, are provided. Finally, simulation studies are included to illustrate our theoretical developments
