    Domain Adaptive Transfer Learning for Fault Diagnosis

    Thanks to digitization of industrial assets in fleets, the ambitious goal of transferring fault diagnosis models fromone machine to the other has raised great interest. Solving these domain adaptive transfer learning tasks has the potential to save large efforts on manually labeling data and modifying models for new machines in the same fleet. Although data-driven methods have shown great potential in fault diagnosis applications, their ability to generalize on new machines and new working conditions are limited because of their tendency to overfit to the training set in reality. One promising solution to this problem is to use domain adaptation techniques. It aims to improve model performance on the target new machine. Inspired by its successful implementation in computer vision, we introduced Domain-Adversarial Neural Networks (DANN) to our context, along with two other popular methods existing in previous fault diagnosis research. We then carefully justify the applicability of these methods in realistic fault diagnosis settings, and offer a unified experimental protocol for a fair comparison between domain adaptation methods for fault diagnosis problems.Comment: Presented at 2019 Prognostics and System Health Management Conference (PHM 2019) in Paris, Franc

    Abstract — Increase in the network usage and the widespread application of networks for more and more performance critical applications has caused a demand for tools that can monitor network health with minimum management traffic. Adaptive probing holds a potential to provide effective tools for end-toend monitoring and fault diagnosis over a network. In this paper we present adaptive probing tools that meet the requirements to provide an effective and efficient solution for fault diagnosis. In this paper, we propose adaptive probing based algorithms to perform fault localization by adapting the probe set to localize the faults in the network.     Wheels within Wheels: Making Fault Management Cost-Effective

    Local design and optimization of the components of a fault management system results in sub-optimal decisions. This means that the target system will likely not meet its objectives (under-performs) or cost too much if conditions, objectives, or constraints change. We can fix this by applying a nested, management system for the fault-management system itself. We believe that doing so will produce a more resilient, self-aware, system that can operate more effectively across a wider range of conditions, and provide better behavior at closer to optimal cost. This document summarizes the results of the Working Group 7 - ``Cost-Effective Fault Management\u27\u27 - at the Dagstuhl Seminar 09201 ``Self-Healing and Self-Adaptive Systems\u27\u27 (organized by A.     An adaptive overcurrent protection scheme for distribution networks

    Distribution networks are evolving toward the vision of smart grids, with increasing penetration of distributed generation (DG), introduction of active network management (ANM), and potentially islanded modes of operation. These changes affect fault levels and fault current paths and have been demonstrated to compromise the correct operation of the overcurrent protection system. This paper presents an adaptive overcurrent protection system which automatically amends the protection settings of all overcurrent relays in response to the impact of DG, ANM, and islanding operation. The scheme has been developed using commercially available protection devices, employs IEC61850-based communications, and has been demonstrated and tested using a hardware-in-the-loop laboratory facility. A systematic comparison of the performance of the proposed adaptive scheme alongside that of a conventional overcurrent scheme is presented. This comparison quantifies the decrease in false operations and the reduction of mean operating time that the adaptive system offers

    An Adaptive Approach to Self-Healing in an Intelligent Environment

    Abstract — In this paper, we address the management of sensor faults in an intelligent environment. Our proposed approach aims to introduce self-healing as a method of fault management. This approach is based on the use of adaptive finite state machine automata which handle suspicious sensor behavior. These state machines communicate with a mobile robot which investigates the error states detected through the sensors in the environment in order to learn from the anomalies and adapt to the changes in sensor behaviors. Additionally, we have determined that two types of fault may arise: systemic faults which the system may learn from and adapt to, and random faults which the system may compensate for through the use of a mobile robot as a sensor substitute.     A Unified Nonlinear Adaptive Approach for Detection and Isolation of Engine Faults

    A challenging problem in aircraft engine health management (EHM) system development is to detect and isolate faults in system components (i.e., compressor, turbine), actuators, and sensors. Existing nonlinear EHM methods often deal with component faults, actuator faults, and sensor faults separately, which may potentially lead to incorrect diagnostic decisions and unnecessary maintenance. Therefore, it would be ideal to address sensor faults, actuator faults, and component faults under one unified framework. This paper presents a systematic and unified nonlinear adaptive framework for detecting and isolating sensor faults, actuator faults, and component faults for aircraft engines. The fault detection and isolation (FDI) architecture consists of a parallel bank of nonlinear adaptive estimators. Adaptive thresholds are appropriately designed such that, in the presence of a particular fault, all components of the residual generated by the adaptive estimator corresponding to the actual fault type remain below their thresholds. If the faults are sufficiently different, then at least one component of the residual generated by each remaining adaptive estimator should exceed its threshold. Therefore, based on the specific response of the residuals, sensor faults, actuator faults, and component faults can be isolated. The effectiveness of the approach was evaluated using the NASA C-MAPSS turbofan engine model, and simulation results are presented

    Smart Grid Sensor Monitoring Based on Deep Learning Technique with Control System Management in Fault Detection

    The smart grid environment comprises of the sensor for monitoring the environment for effective power supply, utilization and establishment of communication. However, the management of smart grid in the monitoring environment isa difficult process due to diversifieduser request in the sensor monitoring with the grid-connected devices. Presently, context-awaremonitoring incorporates effective management of data management and provision of services in two-way processing and computing. In a heterogeneous environment context-aware, smart grid exhibits significant performance characteristics with the grid-connected communication environment for effective data processing for sustainability and stability. Fault diagnoses in the automated system are formulated to diagnose the fault separately. This paper developed anoptimized power grid control model (OPGCM) model for fault detection in the control system model for grid-connected smart home appliances. OPGCM model uses the context-aware power-awarescheme for load management in grid-connected smart homes. Through the adaptive smart grid model,power-aware management is incorporated with the evolutionary programming model for context-awareness user communication. The OPGCM modelperforms fault diagnosis in the grid-connected control system initially, Fault diagnosis system comprises of a sequential process with the extraction of the statistical features to acquirea sustainable dataset with effective signal processing. Secondly, the features are extracted based on the sequential process for the acquired dataset with a reduction of dimensionality. Finally, the classification is performed with the deep learning model to predict or identify the fault pattern. With the OPGCM model, features are optimized with the whale optimization model to acquire features to perform fault diagnosis and classification. Simulation analysis expressed that the proposed OPGCM model exhibits ~16% improved classification accuracy compared with the ANN and HMM model

    Prognostic Reasoner based adaptive power management system for a more electric aircraft

    This research work presents a novel approach that addresses the concept of an adaptive power management system design and development framed in the Prognostics and Health Monitoring(PHM) perspective of an Electrical power Generation and distribution system(EPGS).PHM algorithms were developed to detect the health status of EPGS components which can accurately predict the failures and also able to calculate the Remaining Useful Life(RUL), and in many cases reconfigure for the identified system and subsystem faults. By introducing these approach on Electrical power Management system controller, we are gaining a few minutes lead time to failures with an accurate prediction horizon on critical systems and subsystems components that may introduce catastrophic secondary damages including loss of aircraft. The warning time on critical components and related system reconfiguration must permits safe return to landing as the minimum criteria and would enhance safety. A distributed architecture has been developed for the dynamic power management for electrical distribution system by which all the electrically supplied loads can be effectively controlled.A hybrid mathematical model based on the Direct-Quadrature (d-q) axis transformation of the generator have been formulated for studying various structural and parametric faults. The different failure modes were generated by injecting faults into the electrical power system using a fault injection mechanism. The data captured during these studies have been recorded to form a “Failure Database” for electrical system. A hardware in loop experimental study were carried out to validate the power management algorithm with FPGA-DSP controller.     An Online Adaptive Machine Learning Framework for Autonomous Fault Detection

    The increasing complexity and autonomy of modern systems, particularly in the aerospace industry, demand robust and adaptive fault detection and health management solutions. The development of a data-driven fault detection system that can adapt to varying conditions and system changes is critical to the performance, safety, and reliability of these systems. This dissertation presents a novel fault detection approach based on the integration of the artificial immune system (AIS) paradigm and Online Support Vector Machines (OSVM). Together, these algorithms create the Artificial Immune System augemented Online Support Vector Machine (AISOSVM). The AISOSVM framework combines the strengths of the AIS and OSVM to create a fault detection system that can effectively identify faults in complex systems while maintaining adaptability. The framework is designed using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles, employing the Capella tool and the Arcadia methodology to develop a structured, integrated approach for the design and deployment of the data-driven fault detection system. A key contribution of this research is the development of a Clonal Selection Algorithm that optimizes the OSVM hyperparameters and the V-Detector algorithm parameters, resulting in a more effective fault detection solution. The integration of the AIS in the training process enables the generation of synthetic abnormal data, mitigating the need for engineers to gather large amounts of failure data, which can be impractical. The AISOSVM also incorporates incremental learning and decremental unlearning for the Online Support Vector Machine, allowing the system to adapt online using lightweight computational processes. This capability significantly improves the efficiency of fault detection systems, eliminating the need for offline retraining and redeployment. Reinforcement Learning (RL) is proposed as a promising future direction for the AISOSVM, as it can help autonomously adapt the system performance in near real-time, further mitigating the need for acquiring large amounts of system data for training, and improving the efficiency of the adaptation process by intelligently selecting the best samples to learn from. The AISOSVM framework was applied to real-world scenarios and platform models, demonstrating its effectiveness and adaptability in various use cases. The combination of the AIS and OSVM, along with the online learning and RL integration, provides a robust and adaptive solution for fault detection and health management in complex autonomous systems. This dissertation presents a significant contribution to the field of fault detection and health management by integrating the artificial immune system paradigm with Online Support Vector Machines, developing a structured, integrated approach for designing and deploying data-driven fault detection systems, and implementing reinforcement learning for online, autonomous adaptation of fault management systems. The AISOSVM framework offers a promising solution to address the challenges of fault detection in complex, autonomous systems, with potential applications in a wide range of industries beyond aerospace
