    APPROACHES TO THE GAS CONTROL IN UCG

    Underground Coal Gasification represents an alternative for conventional coal mining. This technology is also less expensive than traditional mining. It is expected that coal will be an important energy source in the coming decades. In requirement to improve the gasification process we must ensure that the combustion reactions generated enough energy to heat the reactants. This can be achieved by controlling the flow of oxidizing agents and the underpressure control at the exit of the reactor UCG. This paper aims to propose the stabilization of air flow as a main gasification agent injected to the gasifier, underground temperature and concentration of O2 in syngas. Also there is proposed the mechanism that could cope with uncertainties in the process of UCG and its control on stabilization level. Paper presents utilization of discrete controller with adaptation in order to stabilization of UCG process variables. The controllers were verified on experimental ex-situ reactor (generator)

    Nonlinear model predictive control using automatic differentiation

    Although nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) might be the best choice for a nonlinear plant, it is still not widely used. This is mainly due to the computational burden associated with solving online a set of nonlinear differential equations and a nonlinear dynamic optimization problem in real time. This thesis is concerned with strategies aimed at reducing the computational burden involved in different stages of the NMPC such as optimization problem, state estimation, and nonlinear model identification. A major part of the computational burden comes from function and derivative evaluations required in different parts of the NMPC algorithm. In this work, the problem is tackled using a recently introduced efficient tool, the automatic differentiation (AD). Using the AD tool, a function is evaluated together with all its partial derivative from the code defining the function with machine accuracy. A new NMPC algorithm based on nonlinear least square optimization is proposed. In a first–order method, the sensitivity equations are integrated using a linear formula while the AD tool is applied to get their values accurately. For higher order approximations, more terms of the Taylor expansion are used in the integration for which the AD is effectively used. As a result, the gradient of the cost function against control moves is accurately obtained so that the online nonlinear optimization can be efficiently solved. In many real control cases, the states are not measured and have to be estimated for each instance when a solution of the model equations is needed. A nonlinear extended version of the Kalman filter (EKF) is added to the NMPC algorithm for this purpose. The AD tool is used to calculate the required derivatives in the local linearization step of the filter automatically and accurately. Offset is another problem faced in NMPC. A new nonlinear integration is devised for this case to eliminate the offset from the output response. In this method, an integrated disturbance model is added to the process model input or output to correct the plant/model mismatch. The time response of the controller is also improved as a by–product. The proposed NMPC algorithm has been applied to an evaporation process and a two continuous stirred tank reactor (two–CSTR) process with satisfactory results to cope with large setpoint changes, unmeasured severe disturbances, and process/model mismatches. When the process equations are not known (black–box) or when these are too complicated to be used in the controller, modelling is needed to create an internal model for the controller. In this thesis, a continuous time recurrent neural network (CTRNN) in a state–space form is developed to be used in NMPC context. An efficient training algorithm for the proposed network is developed using AD tool. By automatically generating Taylor coefficients, the algorithm not only solves the differentiation equations of the network but also produces the sensitivity for the training problem. The same approach is also used to solve online the optimization problem of the NMPC. The proposed CTRNN and the predictive controller were tested on an evaporator and two–CSTR case studies. A comparison with other approaches shows that the new algorithm can considerably reduce network training time and improve solution accuracy. For a third case study, the ALSTOM gasifier, a NMPC via linearization algorithm is implemented to control the system. In this work a nonlinear state–space class Wiener model is used to identify the black–box model of the gasifier. A linear model of the plant at zero–load is adopted as a base model for prediction. Then, a feedforward neural network is created as the static gain for a particular output channel, fuel gas pressure, to compensate its strong nonlinear behavior observed in open–loop simulations. By linearizing the neural network at each sampling time, the static nonlinear gain provides certain adaptation to the linear base model. The AD tool is used here to linearize the neural network efficiently. Noticeable performance improvement is observed when compared with pure linear MPC.     Reinforcement learning-based structural control of floating wind turbines

    The structural control of floating wind turbines using active tuned mass damper is investigated in this article. To our knowledge, this is for the first time that reinforcement learning-based control approach is employed to this type of application. Specifically, an adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm is used to derive the optimal control law based on the nonlinear structural dynamics, and the large-scale machine learning platform Tensorflow is employed for the design and implementation of the neural network (NN) structure. Three fully connected NNs, i.e., a plant network, a critic network, and an action network, are included in the proposed NN structure. Their training requires the gradient information flowing through the whole network, which is tackled by automatic differentiation, a popular technique for deriving the gradients of complex networks automatically. While to our knowledge, the network structures in the existing literature are rather simple and the training of the hidden layer is usually ignored. This allows their gradients to be derived analytically, which is infeasible with complex network structures. Thus, automatic differentiation greatly improves the employed ADP algorithm's ability in solving complex problems. The simulation results of structural control of floating wind turbines show that ADP controller performs very well in both normal and extreme conditions, with the standard deviation of the platform pitch displacement being reduced by around 40%. A clear advantage of ADP controllers over the H∞ controller is observed, especially in extreme conditions.     A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF DATA-DRIVEN MODELING METHODS FOR SOFT-SENSING IN UNDERGROUND COAL GASIFICATION

    Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a technological process, which converts solid coal into a gas in the underground, using injected gasification agents. In the UCG process, a lot of process variables can be measurable with common measuring devices, but there are variables that cannot be measured so easily, e.g., the temperature deep underground. It is also necessary to know the future impact of different control variables on the syngas calorific value in order to support a predictive control. This paper examines the possibility of utilizing Neural Networks, Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines and Support Vector Regression in order to estimate the UCG process data, i.e., syngas calorific value and underground temperature. It was found that, during the training with the UCG data, the SVR and Gaussian kernel achieved the best results, but, during the prediction, the best result was obtained by the piecewise-cubic type of the MARS model. This book focuses on the energy conversion processes in underground coal gasification (UCG), as well as on the modeling and control of this process. The articles published in this book can be divided into three thematic parts of research in the field of underground coal gasification technology: the first part is the impact of technology on the environment, the second is research (studies) on the coal areas and coal properties of UCG technology, and the third is the monitoring, modeling, and control processes within UCG. We hope that this book will be interesting and useful for workers and researchers in the field of underground coal gasification technology, as well as for those who are interested in the mathematical modeling and control of this process

    Alternative Sources of Energy Modeling, Automation, Optimal Planning and Operation

    An economic development model analyzes the adoption of alternative strategy capable of leveraging the economy, based essentially on RES. The combination of wind turbine, PV installation with new technology battery energy storage, DSM network and RES forecasting algorithms maximizes RES integration in isolated islands. An innovative model of power system (PS) imbalances is presented, which aims to capture various features of the stochastic behavior of imbalances and to reduce in average reserve requirements and PS risk. Deep learning techniques for medium-term wind speed and solar irradiance forecasting are presented, using for first time a specific cloud index. Scalability-replicability of the FLEXITRANSTORE technology innovations integrates hardware-software solutions in all areas of the transmission system and the wholesale markets, promoting increased RES. A deep learning and GIS approach are combined for the optimal positioning of wave energy converters. An innovative methodology to hybridize battery-based energy storage using supercapacitors for smoother power profile, a new control scheme and battery degradation mechanism and their economic viability are presented.     Monitoring and Control Framework for Advanced Power Plant Systems Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques

    This dissertation presents the design, development, and simulation testing of a monitoring and control framework for dynamic systems using artificial intelligence techniques. A comprehensive monitoring and control system capable of detecting, identifying, evaluating, and accommodating various subsystem failures and upset conditions is presented. The system is developed by synergistically merging concepts inspired from the biological immune system with evolutionary optimization algorithms and adaptive control techniques.;The proposed methodology provides the tools for addressing the complexity and multi-dimensionality of the modern power plants in a comprehensive and integrated manner that classical approaches cannot achieve. Current approaches typically address abnormal condition (AC) detection of isolated subsystems of low complexity, affected by specific AC involving few features with limited identification capability. They do not attempt AC evaluation and mostly rely on control system robustness for accommodation. Addressing the problem of power plant monitoring and control under AC at this level of completeness has not yet been attempted.;Within the proposed framework, a novel algorithm, namely the partition of the universe, was developed for building the artificial immune system self. As compared to the clustering approach, the proposed approach is less computationally intensive and facilitates the use of full-dimensional self for system AC detection, identification, and evaluation. The approach is implemented in conjunction with a modified and improved dendritic cell algorithm. It allows for identifying the failed subsystems without previous training and is extended to address the AC evaluation using a novel approach.;The adaptive control laws are designed to augment the performance and robustness of baseline control laws under normal and abnormal operating conditions. Artificial neural network-based and artificial immune system-based approaches are developed and investigated for an advanced power plant through numerical simulation.;This dissertation also presents the development of an interactive computational environment for the optimization of power plant control system using evolutionary techniques with immunity-inspired enhancements. Several algorithms mimicking mechanisms of the immune system of superior organisms, such as cloning, affinity-based selection, seeding, and vaccination are used. These algorithms are expected to enhance the computational effectiveness, improve convergence, and be more efficient in handling multiple local extrema, through an adequate balance between exploration and exploitation.;The monitoring and control framework formulated in this dissertation applies to a wide range of technical problems. The proposed methodology is demonstrated with promising results using a high validity DynsimRTM model of the acid gas removal unit that is part of the integrated gasification combined cycle power plant available at West Virginia University AVESTAR Center. The obtained results show that the proposed system is an efficient and valuable technique to be applied to a real world application. The implementation of this methodology can potentially have significant impacts on the operational safety of many complex systems
