    This paper presents a fuzzy logic based method to track user satisfaction without the need for devices to monitor users physiological conditions. User satisfaction is the key to any product’s acceptance; computer applications and video games provide a unique opportunity to provide a tailored environment for each user to better suit their needs. We have implemented a non-adaptive fuzzy logic model of emotion, based on the emotional component of the Fuzzy Logic Adaptive Model of Emotion (FLAME) proposed by El-Nasr, to estimate player emotion in UnrealTournament 2004. In this paper we describe the implementation of this system and present the results of one of several play tests. Our research contradicts the current literature that suggests physiological measurements are needed. We show that it is possible to use a software only method to estimate user emotion

    What lies beyond social capital? the role of social psychology in building community resilience to climate change

    Climate change is increasing the prevalence and impact of extreme events, which may have severe psychosocial after-effects for the people and communities who are affected. To mitigate their impact, governments advocate developing community resilience. Most approaches to community resilience employ the concept of social capital, suggesting that communities with more dense pre-existing networks of trust and reciprocity are more likely to prepare for, respond to, and recover more effectively from disasters. Notwithstanding its benefits, we argue that social capital cannot account for microprocesses of disaster behaviour such as groups that emerge in absence of any pre-existing ties and provide social support. We propose a new conceptualisation of aspects of community resilience based on the social identity approach in social psychology and grounded upon the principles of collective psychosocial resilience – the way that shared identification allows groups to emerge, coordinate, express solidarity and provide social support. We argue that our approach overcomes the limitations of social capital, because it can explain the processes of group behaviour in disasters, acknowledges people’s propensity to organise collectively, promotes bottom-up approaches to community resilience, recognises emergent communities, and suggests evidence-based recommendations for policy and practice. Finally, we propose an agenda for future research

    Example Based Caricature Synthesis

    The likeness of a caricature to the original face image is an essential and often overlooked part of caricature production. In this paper we present an example based caricature synthesis technique, consisting of shape exaggeration, relationship exaggeration, and optimization for likeness. Rather than relying on a large training set of caricature face pairs, our shape exaggeration step is based on only one or a small number of examples of facial features. The relationship exaggeration step introduces two definitions which facilitate global facial feature synthesis. The first is the T-Shape rule, which describes the relative relationship between the facial elements in an intuitive manner. The second is the so called proportions, which characterizes the facial features in a proportion form. Finally we introduce a similarity metric as the likeness metric based on the Modified Hausdorff Distance (MHD) which allows us to optimize the configuration of facial elements, maximizing likeness while satisfying a number of constraints. The effectiveness of our algorithm is demonstrated with experimental results

    Senseable Spaces: from a theoretical perspective to the application in augmented environments

    openGrazie all’ enorme diffusione di dispositivi senzienti nella vita di tutti i giorni, nell’ ultimo decennio abbiamo assistito ad un cambio definitivo nel modo in cui gli utenti interagiscono con lo spazio circostante. Viene coniato il termine Spazio Sensibile, per descrivere quegli spazi in grado di fornire servizi contestuali agli utenti, misurando e analizzando le dinamiche che in esso avvengono, e di reagire conseguentemente a questo continuo flusso di dati bidirezionale. La ricerca è stata condotta abbracciando diversi domini di applicazione, le cui singole esigenze hanno reso necessario testare il concetto di Spazi Sensibili in diverse declinazioni, mantenendo al centro della ricerca l’utente, con la duplice accezione di end-user e manager. Molteplici sono i contributi rispetto allo stato dell’ arte. Il concetto di Spazio Sensibile è stato calato nel settore dei Beni Culturali, degli Spazi Pubblici, delle Geosciences e del Retail. I casi studio nei musei e nella archeologia dimostrano come l’ utilizzo della Realtà Aumentata possa essere sfruttata di fronte a un dipinto o in outdoor per la visualizzazione di modelli complessi, In ambito urbano, il monitoraggio di dati generati dagli utenti ha consentito di capire le dinamiche di un evento di massa, durante il quale le stesse persone fruivano di servizi contestuali. Una innovativa applicazione di Realtà Aumentata è stata come servizio per facilitare l’ ispezione di fasce tampone lungo i fiumi, standardizzando flussi di dati e modelli provenienti da un Sistema Informativo Territoriale. Infine, un robusto sistema di indoor localization è stato istallato in ambiente retail, per scopi classificazione dei percorsi e per determinare le potenzialità di un punto vendita. La tesi è inoltre una dimostrazione di come Space Sensing e Geomatica siano discipline complementari: la geomatica consente di acquisire e misurare dati geo spaziali e spazio temporali a diversa scala, lo Space Sensing utilizza questi dati per fornire servizi all’ utente precisi e contestuali.Given the tremendous growth of ubiquitous services in our daily lives, during the last few decades we have witnessed a definitive change in the way users' experience their surroundings. At the current state of art, devices are able to sense the environment and users’ location, enabling them to experience improved digital services, creating synergistic loop between the use of the technology, and the use of the space itself. We coined the term Senseable Space, to define the kinds of spaces able to provide users with contextual services, to measure and analyse their dynamics and to react accordingly, in a seamless exchange of information. Following the paradigm of Senseable Spaces as the main thread, we selected a set of experiences carried out in different fields; central to this investigation there is of course the user, placed in the dual roles of end-user and manager. The main contribution of this thesis lies in the definition of this new paradigm, realized in the following domains: Cultural Heritage, Public Open Spaces, Geosciences and Retail. For the Cultural Heritage panorama, different pilot projects have been constructed from creating museum based installations to developing mobile applications for archaeological settings. Dealing with urban areas, app-based services are designed to facilitate the route finding in a urban park and to provide contextual information in a city festival. We also outlined a novel application to facilitate the on-site inspection by risk managers thanks to the use of Augmented Reality services. Finally, a robust indoor localization system has been developed, designed to ease customer profiling in the retail sector.     Towards Ubiquitous Semantic Metaverse: Challenges, Approaches, and Opportunities

    In recent years, ubiquitous semantic Metaverse has been studied to revolutionize immersive cyber-virtual experiences for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) users, which leverages advanced semantic understanding and representation to enable seamless, context-aware interactions within mixed-reality environments. This survey focuses on the intelligence and spatio-temporal characteristics of four fundamental system components in ubiquitous semantic Metaverse, i.e., artificial intelligence (AI), spatio-temporal data representation (STDR), semantic Internet of Things (SIoT), and semantic-enhanced digital twin (SDT). We thoroughly survey the representative techniques of the four fundamental system components that enable intelligent, personalized, and context-aware interactions with typical use cases of the ubiquitous semantic Metaverse, such as remote education, work and collaboration, entertainment and socialization, healthcare, and e-commerce marketing. Furthermore, we outline the opportunities for constructing the future ubiquitous semantic Metaverse, including scalability and interoperability, privacy and security, performance measurement and standardization, as well as ethical considerations and responsible AI. Addressing those challenges is important for creating a robust, secure, and ethically sound system environment that offers engaging immersive experiences for the users and AR/VR applications.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 3 table

    Transmission adaptative de modèles 3D massifs

    Avec les progrès de l'édition de modèles 3D et des techniques de reconstruction 3D, de plus en plus de modèles 3D sont disponibles et leur qualité augmente. De plus, le support de la visualisation 3D sur le web s'est standardisé ces dernières années. Un défi majeur est donc de transmettre des modèles massifs à distance et de permettre aux utilisateurs de visualiser et de naviguer dans ces environnements virtuels. Cette thèse porte sur la transmission et l'interaction de contenus 3D et propose trois contributions majeures. Tout d'abord, nous développons une interface de navigation dans une scène 3D avec des signets -- de petits objets virtuels ajoutés à la scène sur lesquels l'utilisateur peut cliquer pour atteindre facilement un emplacement recommandé. Nous décrivons une étude d'utilisateurs où les participants naviguent dans des scènes 3D avec ou sans signets. Nous montrons que les utilisateurs naviguent (et accomplissent une tâche donnée) plus rapidement en utilisant des signets. Cependant, cette navigation plus rapide a un inconvénient sur les performances de la transmission : un utilisateur qui se déplace plus rapidement dans une scène a besoin de capacités de transmission plus élevées afin de bénéficier de la même qualité de service. Cet inconvénient peut être atténué par le fait que les positions des signets sont connues à l'avance : en ordonnant les faces du modèle 3D en fonction de leur visibilité depuis un signet, on optimise la transmission et donc, on diminue la latence lorsque les utilisateurs cliquent sur les signets. Deuxièmement, nous proposons une adaptation du standard de transmission DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP), très utilisé en vidéo, à la transmission de maillages texturés 3D. Pour ce faire, nous divisons la scène en un arbre k-d où chaque cellule correspond à un adaptation set DASH. Chaque cellule est en outre divisée en segments DASH d'un nombre fixe de faces, regroupant des faces de surfaces comparables. Chaque texture est indexée dans son propre adaptation set à différentes résolutions. Toutes les métadonnées (les cellules de l'arbre k-d, les résolutions des textures, etc.) sont référencées dans un fichier XML utilisé par DASH pour indexer le contenu: le MPD (Media Presentation Description). Ainsi, notre framework hérite de la scalabilité offerte par DASH. Nous proposons ensuite des algorithmes capables d'évaluer l'utilité de chaque segment de données en fonction du point de vue du client, et des politiques de transmission qui décident des segments à télécharger. Enfin, nous étudions la mise en place de la transmission et de la navigation 3D sur les appareils mobiles. Nous intégrons des signets dans notre version 3D de DASH et proposons une version améliorée de notre client DASH qui bénéficie des signets. Une étude sur les utilisateurs montre qu'avec notre politique de chargement adaptée aux signets, les signets sont plus susceptibles d'être cliqués, ce qui améliore à la fois la qualité de service et la qualité d'expérience des utilisateur
