Research on Quality of Service Based Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Quality of service (QoS) based routing protocols play a significant role in MANETs to maintain proper flow of data with efficient power consumption and without data loss. However, several network resource based technical challenges or issues are encountered in the design and implementation of QoS routing protocols that perform their routing function by considering the shortest route or the lowest cost. Furthermore, a secondary route is not reserved and alternative routes are not searched unless the established route is broken. The current structures of the state-of-the-art protocols for MANETs are not appropriate for today's high bandwidth and mobility requirements. Therefore, research on new routing protocols is needed, considering energy level, coverage, location, speed, movement, and link stability instead of only shortest path and lowest cost. This paper summarizes the main characteristics of QoS-based routing protocols to facilitate researchers to design and select QoS-based routing protocols. In this study, a wide range of protocols with their characteristics were classified according to QoS routing strategy, routing information update mechanism, interaction between network and MAC layer, QoS constraints, QoS guarantee type and number of discovered routes. In addition, the protocols were compared in terms of properties, design features, challenges and QoS metrics

Resources Efficient Dynamic Clustering Algorithm for Flying Ad-Hoc Network

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, often known as UAVs, are connected in the form of a Flying Ad-hoc Network, or FANET, and placed to use in a variety of applications to carry out efficient remote monitoring. Their great mobility has an adverse effect on their energy consumption, which in turn has a detrimental effect on the network's stability and the effectiveness of communication. To manage the very dynamic flying behavior of UAVs and to keep the network stable, novel clustering algorithms have been implemented. In this context, a novel clustering technique is developed to meet the rapid mobility of UAVs and to offer safe inter-UAV distance, reliable communication, and an extended network lifespan. It also provides a detailed analysis of the similarities and distinctions between AODV, AOMDV, DSDV, and DumbAgent. The performance of these protocols is analyzed using the NS-2 simulator. The simulation results are shown in our study with AODV, AOMDV, DSDV, and DumbAgent. The results of the simulation make it abundantly evident that the AODV routing protocol outperforms the other routing protocols DSDV, AOMDV, and DumbAgent in terms of the number of packets lost, the amount of throughput achieved, the amount of routing overhead generated, and the amount of delay

Anycast in next generation Internet Protocol is a hot topic in the research of computer networks. It has promising potentials and also many challenges, such as architecture, routing, Quality-of-Service, anycast in ad hoc networks, application-layer anycast, etc. In this thesis, we tackle some important topics among them. The thesis at first presents an introduction about anycast, followed by the related work. Then, as our major contributions, a number of challenging issues are addressed in the following chapters. We tackled the anycast routing problem by proposing a requirement based probing algorithm at application layer for anycast routing. Compared with the existing periodical based probing routing algorithm, the proposed routing algorithm improves the performance in terms of delay. We addressed the reliable service problem by the design of a twin server model for the anycast servers, providing a transparent and reliable service for all anycast queries. We addressed the load balance problem of anycast servers by proposing new job deviation strategies, to provide a similar Quality-of-Service to all clients of anycast servers. We applied the mesh routing methodology in the anycast routing in ad hoc networking environment, which provides a reliable routing service and uses much less network resources. We combined the anycast protocol and the multicast protocol to provide a bidirectional service, and applied the service to Web-based database applications, achieving a better query efficiency and data synchronization. Finally, we proposed a new Internet based service, minicast, as the combination of the anycast and multicast protocols. Such a service has potential applications in information retrieval, parallel computing, cache queries, etc. We show that the minicast service consumes less network resources while providing the same services. The last chapter of the thesis presents the conclusions and discusses the future work
