    NASA Automated Rendezvous and Capture Review. Executive summary

    In support of the Cargo Transfer Vehicle (CTV) Definition Studies in FY-92, the Advanced Program Development division of the Office of Space Flight at NASA Headquarters conducted an evaluation and review of the United States capabilities and state-of-the-art in Automated Rendezvous and Capture (AR&C). This review was held in Williamsburg, Virginia on 19-21 Nov. 1991 and included over 120 attendees from U.S. government organizations, industries, and universities. One hundred abstracts were submitted to the organizing committee for consideration. Forty-two were selected for presentation. The review was structured to include five technical sessions. Forty-two papers addressed topics in the five categories below: (1) hardware systems and components; (2) software systems; (3) integrated systems; (4) operations; and (5) supporting infrastructure

    The field of telepresence is defined, and overviews of those capabilities that are now available, and those that will be required to support a NASA telepresence effort are provided. Investigation of NASA's plans and goals with regard to telepresence, extensive literature search for materials relating to relevant technologies, a description of these technologies and their state of the art, and projections for advances in these technologies over the next decade are included. Several space projects are examined in detail to determine what capabilities are required of a telepresence system in order to accomplish various tasks, such as servicing and assembly. The key operational and technological areas are identified, conclusions and recommendations are made for further research, and an example developmental program is presented, leading to an operational telepresence servicer

    AUTONOMOUS SPACECRAFT RENDEZVOUS WITH A TUMBLING OBJECT: APPLIED REACHABILITY ANALYSIS AND GUIDANCE AND CONTROL STRATEGIES

    Rendezvous and proximity operations are an essential component of both military and commercial space missions and are rising in complexity. This dissertation presents an applied reachability analysis and develops a computationally feasible autonomous guidance algorithm for the purpose of spacecraft rendezvous and proximity maneuvers around a tumbling object. Recent advancements enable the use of more sophisticated, computation-based algorithms, instead of traditional control methods. These algorithms are desirable for autonomous applications due to their ability to optimize performance and explicitly handle constraints (e.g., safety, control limits). In an autonomous setting, however, some important questions must be answered before an algorithm implementation can be realized. First, the feasibility of a maneuver is addressed by analyzing the fundamental spacecraft relative dynamics. Particularly, a set of initial relative states is computed and visualized from which the desired rendezvous state can be reached (i.e., backward reachability analysis). Second, with the knowledge that a maneuver is feasible, the Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework is utilized to design a stabilizing feedback control law that optimizes performance and incorporates constraints such as control saturation limits and collision avoidance.     This document presents a compilation of abstracts of papers solicited for presentation at the NASA Automated Rendezvous and Capture Review held in Williamsburg, VA on November 19-21, 1991. Due to limitations on time and other considerations, not all abstracts could be presented during the review. The organizing committee determined however, that all abstracts merited availability to all participants and represented data and information reflecting state-of-the-art of this technology which should be captured in one document for future use and reference. The organizing committee appreciates the interest shown in the review and the response by the authors in submitting these abstracts

    Video guidance, landing, and imaging systems

    The adaptive potential of video guidance technology for earth orbital and interplanetary missions was explored. The application of video acquisition, pointing, tracking, and navigation technology was considered to three primary missions: planetary landing, earth resources satellite, and spacecraft rendezvous and docking. It was found that an imaging system can be mechanized to provide a spacecraft or satellite with a considerable amount of adaptability with respect to its environment. It also provides a level of autonomy essential to many future missions and enhances their data gathering ability. The feasibility of an autonomous video guidance system capable of observing a planetary surface during terminal descent and selecting the most acceptable landing site was successfully demonstrated in the laboratory. The techniques developed for acquisition, pointing, and tracking show promise for recognizing and tracking coastlines, rivers, and other constituents of interest. Routines were written and checked for rendezvous, docking, and station-keeping functions

    Autonomous Satellite Rendezvous and Proximity Operations with Time-Constrained Sub-Optimal Model Predictive Control

    This paper presents a time-constrained model predictive control strategy for the 6 degree-of-freedom (6DOF) autonomous rendezvous and docking problem between a controllable "deputy" spacecraft and an uncontrollable "chief" spacecraft. The control strategy accounts for computational time constraints due to limited onboard processing speed. The translational dynamics model is derived from the Clohessy-Wiltshire equations and the angular dynamics are modeled on gas jet actuation about the deputy's center of mass. Simulation results are shown to achieve the docking configuration under computational time constraints by limiting the number of allowed algorithm iterations when computing each input. Specifically, we show that upwards of 90% of computations can be eliminated from a model predictive control implementation without significantly harming control performance

    Dual-Quaternion-Based Fault-Tolerant Control for Spacecraft Tracking With Finite-Time Convergence

    Results are presented for a study of dual-quaternion-based fault-tolerant control for spacecraft tracking. First, a six-degrees-of-freedom dynamic model under a dual-quaternion-based description is employed to describe the relative coupled motion of a target-pursuer spacecraft tracking system. Then, a novel fault-tolerant control method is proposed to enable the pursuer to track the attitude and the position of the target even though its actuators have multiple faults. Furthermore, based on a novel time-varying sliding manifold, finite-time stability of the closed-loop system is theoretically guaranteed, and the convergence time of the system can be given explicitly. Multiple-task capability of the proposed control law is further demonstrated in the presence of disturbances and parametric uncertainties. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed control method

    Dynamics and Control of Spacecraft Rendezvous By Nonlinear Model Predictive Control

    This doctoral research investigates the fundamental problems in the dynamics and control of spacecraft rendezvous with a non-cooperative tumbling target. New control schemes based on nonlinear model predictive control method have been developed and validated experimentally by ground-based air-bearing satellite simulators. It is focused on the autonomous rendezvous for a chaser spacecraft to approach the target in the final rendezvous stage. Two challenges have been identified and investigated in this stage: the mathematical modeling of the targets tumbling motion and the constrained control scheme that is solvable in an on-line manner. First, the mathematical description of the tumbling motion of the target spacecraft is proposed for the chaser spacecraft to rendezvous with the target. In the meantime, the practical constraints are formulated to ensure the safety and avoid collision during the final approaching stage. This set of constraints are integrated into the trajectory planning problem as a constrained optimization problem. Second, the nonlinear model predictive control is proposed to generate the feedback control commands by iteratively solving an open-loop discrete-time nonlinear optimal control problem at each sampling instant. The proposed control scheme is validated both theoretically and experimentally by a custom-built spacecraft simulator floating on a high-accuracy granite table. Computer software for electronic hardware for the spacecraft simulator and for the controller is designed and developed in house. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed nonlinear model predictive control scheme in a hardware-in-the-loop environment. Furthermore, a preliminary outlook is given for future extension of the spacecraft simulator with consideration of the robotic arms

    Fixed-time rendezvous control of spacecraft with a tumbling target under loss of actuator effectiveness

    This paper investigates the fixed-time fault-tolerant control problem of spacecraft rendezvous and docking with a freely tumbling target in the presence of external disturbance and thruster faults. More specifically, based on the attitude of the target spacecraft, a line-of-sight coordinate frame is defined first, and the dynamical equations relative to the tumbling target are derived to describe the relative position (not six degrees of freedom). Then two fixed-time position controllers are proposed to guarantee that the closed-loop system is stable in finite time in the sense of a fixed-time concept, even in the presence of simultaneous external disturbance and thruster faults. Numerical simulations illustrate that the chaser spacecraft can successfully perform the rendezvous using the proposed controllers

    An Iterative Guidance and Navigation Algorithm for Orbit Rendezvous of Cooperating CubeSats

    Modern space missions often require satellites to perform guidance, navigation, and control tasks autonomously. Despite their limited resources, small satellites are also involved in this trend, as in-orbit rendezvous and docking maneuvers and formation flying have become common requirements in their operational scenarios. A critical aspect of these tasks is that these algorithms are very much intertwined with each other, although they are often designed completely independently of one another. This paper describes the design and simulation of a guidance and relative navigation architecture for the rendezvous of two cooperating CubeSats. The integration of the two algorithms provides robustness to the solution, by simulating realistic levels of noise and uncertainty in the guidance law implementation. The proposed guidance law is derived based on the linearized equations of orbital motion, written in terms of spherical coordinates. The trajectory is iteratively corrected at a fixed time step, so that errors from the navigation and the initial orbital condition can be recovered. The navigation algorithm processes the bearing and range measurements from a camera and an intersatellite link through an unscented filter to provide the information required from the guidance law. A Monte Carlo campaign based on a 3-DOF simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed solution
