    The Design of a System Architecture for Mobile Multimedia Computers

    This chapter discusses the system architecture of a portable computer, called Mobile Digital Companion, which provides support for handling multimedia applications energy efficiently. Because battery life is limited and battery weight is an important factor for the size and the weight of the Mobile Digital Companion, energy management plays a crucial role in the architecture. As the Companion must remain usable in a variety of environments, it has to be flexible and adaptable to various operating conditions. The Mobile Digital Companion has an unconventional architecture that saves energy by using system decomposition at different levels of the architecture and exploits locality of reference with dedicated, optimised modules. The approach is based on dedicated functionality and the extensive use of energy reduction techniques at all levels of system design. The system has an architecture with a general-purpose processor accompanied by a set of heterogeneous autonomous programmable modules, each providing an energy efficient implementation of dedicated tasks.     Multimedia computing and mobile computing are two trends that will lead to a new application domain in the near future. However, the technological challenges to establishing this paradigm of computing are non-trivial. Personal mobile computing offers a vision of the future with a much richer and more exciting set of architecture research challenges than extrapolations of the current desktop architectures. In particular, these devices will have limited battery resources, will handle diverse data types, and will operate in environments that are insecure, dynamic and which vary significantly in time and location. The approach we made to achieve such a system is to use autonomous, adaptable modules, interconnected by a switch rather than by a bus, and to offload as much as work as possible from the CPU to programmable modules that is placed in the data streams.     Semantic multimedia remote display for mobile thin clients

    Current remote display technologies for mobile thin clients convert practically all types of graphical content into sequences of images rendered by the client. Consequently, important information concerning the content semantics is lost. The present paper goes beyond this bottleneck by developing a semantic multimedia remote display. The principle consists of representing the graphical content as a real-time interactive multimedia scene graph. The underlying architecture features novel components for scene-graph creation and management, as well as for user interactivity handling. The experimental setup considers the Linux X windows system and BiFS/LASeR multimedia scene technologies on the server and client sides, respectively. The implemented solution was benchmarked against currently deployed solutions (VNC and Microsoft-RDP), by considering text editing and WWW browsing applications. The quantitative assessments demonstrate: (1) visual quality expressed by seven objective metrics, e.g., PSNR values between 30 and 42 dB or SSIM values larger than 0.9999; (2) downlink bandwidth gain factors ranging from 2 to 60; (3) real-time user event management expressed by network round-trip time reduction by factors of 4-6 and by uplink bandwidth gain factors from 3 to 10; (4) feasible CPU activity, larger than in the RDP case but reduced by a factor of 1.5 with respect to the VNC-HEXTILE

The virtual bus architecture is a hierarchical access network structure that has been proposed to simplify network signaling.     231 p.5G expandirĂĄ las redes mĂłviles con un mayor ancho de banda, menor latencia y la capacidad de proveer conectividad de forma masiva y sin fallos. Los usuarios de servicios multimedia esperan una experiencia de reproducciĂłn multimedia fluida que se adapte de forma dinĂĄmica a los intereses del usuario y a su contexto de movilidad. Sin embargo, la red, adoptando una posiciĂłn neutral, no ayuda a fortalecer los parĂĄmetros que inciden en la calidad de experiencia. En consecuencia, las soluciones diseñadas para realizar un envĂ­o de trĂĄfico multimedia de forma dinĂĄmica y eficiente cobran un especial interĂ©s. Para mejorar la calidad de la experiencia de servicios multimedia en entornos 5G la investigaciĂłn llevada a cabo en esta tesis ha diseñado un sistema mĂșltiple, basado en cuatro contribuciones.El primer mecanismo, SaW, crea una granja elĂĄstica de recursos de computaciĂłn que ejecutan tareas de anĂĄlisis multimedia. Los resultados confirman la competitividad de este enfoque respecto a granjas de servidores. El segundo mecanismo, LAMB-DASH, elige la calidad en el reproductor multimedia con un diseño que requiere una baja complejidad de procesamiento. Las pruebas concluyen su habilidad para mejorar la estabilidad, consistencia y uniformidad de la calidad de experiencia entre los clientes que comparten una celda de red. El tercer mecanismo, MEC4FAIR, explota las capacidades 5G de analizar mĂ©tricas del envĂ­o de los diferentes flujos. Los resultados muestran cĂłmo habilita al servicio a coordinar a los diferentes clientes en la celda para mejorar la calidad del servicio. El cuarto mecanismo, CogNet, sirve para provisionar recursos de red y configurar una topologĂ­a capaz de conmutar una demanda estimada y garantizar unas cotas de calidad del servicio.     [EN] Wireless mobile ad ho networks, also known as MANETs, are omposed by independent mobile stations that ommuni ate without requiring any sort of infrastru ture for support. These networks are hara terized by variable bandwidth values and frequent path breaks, whi h are due to hannel noise, interferen e between stations and mobility. Su h fa tors require significant adaptation apabilites at different levels of the proto ol suites employed, enabling stations to qui kly respond to fast- hanging network onditions. Resear h on the most adequate proto- ols for the physi al, MAC and routing layers is still on-going, though some basi onsensus has already been rea hed and several testbeds have been setup around the world. To deploy real-time multimedia servi es, namely voi e and video, on top of su h an unreliable network environment is a very hallenging task. In this thesis we propose to a hieve that goal starting from urrently available Wi-Fi te hnology, and gradually finding the most adequate enhan ements to ea h proto ol layer of interest; we then ombine these enhan ements until we a hieve a omplete QoS framework for ad ho networks. By using urrently available te hnology we assure that the proposal of this thesis has an inherent high-level of appli ability on real life environments. Sin e our working field fo uses on video transmission over wireless ad ho networks, we will show how it is possible to support several QoS- onstrained video streams in MANET environments hara terized by moderate to high mobility levels, and by a significant amount of best efort traffic[ES] Las redes inalĂĄmbricas ad hoc, tambiĂ©n conocidas como redes MANET, estĂĄn compuestas por un conjunto de estaciones mĂłviles independientes capaces de omunicarse entre sĂ­ sin necesidad de ningĂșn tipo de infraestructura comĂșn de comunicaciones. Estas redes se caracterizan por tener un ancho de banda variable y pĂ©rdidas frecuentes de ruta que se pueden atribuir al ruido del anal inalĂĄmbrico, a la interferencia entre las estaciones mĂłviles o bien a la movilidad de las estaciones. Dichos factores requieren una gran capacidad de adaptaciĂłn en las diferentes capas de la arquitectura de protocolos, permitiendo a una estaciĂłn responder rĂĄpidamente a posibles cambios bruscos en las condiciones de la red. A pesar de que aĂșn se estĂĄn realizando trabajos de investigaciĂłn en bus a de los protocolos mĂĄs adecuados para las capas fĂ­sicas, a eso al medio (MAC) y encaminamiento, ha sido posible llegar a un nivel bĂĄsico de consenso, lo cual ha permitido el despliegue de plataformas y entornos aplicados que utilizan tecnologĂ­a de red MANET. Ofrecer servicios multimedia, como voz y vĂ­deo, en redes con tan poca habilidad es un desafĂ­o importante. En esta tesis nos proponemos alcanzar este objetivo partiendo de la tecnologĂ­a Wi-Fi actualmente disponible, encontrando de forma paulatina las mejoras mĂĄs importantes en las diferentes capas de la arquitectura de red, para llegar, finalmente, a una soluciĂłn integrada capaz de ofrecer calidad de servicio (QoS) en las redes MANET. Al utilizar la tecnologĂ­a que disponemos actualmente nos aseguramos que las propuestas de esta tesis tengan un alto grado de aplicabilidad en entornos reales.
