    Information Communication Technology for Crisis Management and Shared Situational Awareness: Social Media Public Health Communication During the COVID-19 Pandemic

    This comprehensive study analyzes the role of social media, specifically Facebook, in crisis communication during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducted through a longitudinal netnography approach, the research scrutinizes the communication strategies of Australian public health agencies from 2019 to 2020 and their impact on shared situational awareness (SSA). Drawing on the Seppänen et al. (2013) model for crisis communication, the study looks at three key aspects - link content (information), link type (communication), and link quality (trust) - and evaluates how they influence SSA during a crisis. The application of Chaos Theory further enhances the research's depth by identifying patterns and transformations in Facebook communications before and after the COVID-19 disruption. The study reveals that the pandemic significantly disrupted typical health communication strategies, leading to new emergent patterns, and it also underscores the critical role of secondary communication and emotional factors in the public's decision to share crisis information. Moreover, it identifies issues such as misinformation and inconsistency in messaging as significant obstacles to the public's trust in official health communications, ultimately impeding the creation of adequate SSA. The research emphasizes the need to develop consistent, clear, and reliable messaging strategies for effective crisis communication. The findings expand existing knowledge on social media utilization in crisis communication, offering valuable insights to enhance public health agencies' communication strategies, thereby aiding in the creation of trusted SSA. Unlike prior studies focusing on crisis response teams, this research concentrates on shared situational awareness among the general public, providing practical recommendations to improve social media crisis communication for more effective response and management in a health crisis

    Concept graphs: Applications to biomedical text categorization and concept extraction

    As science advances, the underlying literature grows rapidly providing valuable knowledge mines for researchers and practitioners. The text content that makes up these knowledge collections is often unstructured and, thus, extracting relevant or novel information could be nontrivial and costly. In addition, human knowledge and expertise are being transformed into structured digital information in the form of vocabulary databases and ontologies. These knowledge bases hold substantial hierarchical and semantic relationships of common domain concepts. Consequently, automating learning tasks could be reinforced with those knowledge bases through constructing human-like representations of knowledge. This allows developing algorithms that simulate the human reasoning tasks of content perception, concept identification, and classification. This study explores the representation of text documents using concept graphs that are constructed with the help of a domain ontology. In particular, the target data sets are collections of biomedical text documents, and the domain ontology is a collection of predefined biomedical concepts and relationships among them. The proposed representation preserves those relationships and allows using the structural features of graphs in text mining and learning algorithms. Those features emphasize the significance of the underlying relationship information that exists in the text content behind the interrelated topics and concepts of a text document. The experiments presented in this study include text categorization and concept extraction applied on biomedical data sets. The experimental results demonstrate how the relationships extracted from text and captured in graph structures can be used to improve the performance of the aforementioned applications. The discussed techniques can be used in creating and maintaining digital libraries through enhancing indexing, retrieval, and management of documents as well as in a broad range of domain-specific applications such as drug discovery, hypothesis generation, and the analysis of molecular structures in chemoinformatics

    Medicine is undergoing a sector-wide transformation thanks to the advances in computing and networking technologies. Healthcare is changing from reactive and hospital-centered to preventive and personalized, from disease focused to well-being centered. In essence, the healthcare systems, as well as fundamental medicine research, are becoming smarter. We anticipate significant improvements in areas ranging from molecular genomics and proteomics to decision support for healthcare professionals through big data analytics, to support behavior changes through technology-enabled self-management, and social and motivational support. Furthermore, with smart technologies, healthcare delivery could also be made more efficient, higher quality, and lower cost.     Sentiment analysis as a service

    This research focuses on the design and development of a service composition based framework that enables the execution of services for social media based sentiment analysis. Our research develops novel analytical models, composition techniques and algorithms which use services as a mean for sentiment abstraction, processing and analysis from large scale social media data. Current sentiment analysis techniques require specialized skill of data science and machine learning. Moreover, traditional approaches rely on laborious and time-consuming activities such as manual dataset labelling, data model training and validation. This makes overall sentiment analysis process a challenging task. In comparison, services are `ready-made' software solutions that can be composed on-demand for developing complex applications without indulging in the domain specific details. This thesis investigates a novel approach that transforms traditional social media based sentiment analysis process into a service composition driven solution. In this thesis, we begin by developing a novel service framework that replaces the traditional sentiment analysis tasks with online services. Our framework includes a new service model to present services required for sentiment analysis. We develop a semantic service composition model and algorithm that dynamically composes various services for data collection, noise filtering and sentiment extraction. In particular, we focus on abstracting sentiment based on location and time. We then focus on enhancing the flexibility of our proposed service framework to compose appropriate sentiment analysis services for highly dynamic and changing features of social media platforms. In addition, we aim to efficiently process and analyze large scale social media data. In order to enhance our service composition framework, we propose a novel approach to formalize social media platforms as cloud enabled services. We develop a functional and quality of service (QoS) model that captures various dynamic features of social media platforms. In addition, we devise a cloud based service model to access social media platforms as services by using the Ontology Web Language for Service (OWL-S). Secondly, we integrate the QoS model into our existing composition framework. It enables our framework to dynamically assess the QoS of multiple social media platforms, and simultaneously compose appropriate services to extract, process, analyze and integrate the sentiment results from large scale data. Finally, we concentrate on efficient utilization of the sentiment analysis extracted from large scale data. We formulate a meta-information composition model that transforms and stores sentiment obtained from large streams of data into re-usable information. Later, the re-usable information is on-demand integrated and delivered to end users. To demonstrate the performance and test the effectiveness of our proposed models, we develop prototypes to evaluate our composition framework. We design several scenarios and conduct a series of experiments using real-world social media datasets. We present the results and discuss the outcomes which validate the performance of our research

    Contributions to the cornerstones of interaction in visualization: strengthening the interaction of visualization

    Visualization has become an accepted means for data exploration and analysis. Although interaction is an important component of visualization approaches, current visualization research pays less attention to interaction than to aspects of the graphical representation. Therefore, the goal of this work is to strengthen the interaction side of visualization. To this end, we establish a unified view on interaction in visualization. This unified view covers four cornerstones: the data, the tasks, the technology, and the human.Visualisierung hat sich zu einem unverzichtbaren Werkzeug für die Exploration und Analyse von Daten entwickelt. Obwohl Interaktion ein wichtiger Bestandteil solcher Werkzeuge ist, wird der Interaktion in der aktuellen Visualisierungsforschung weniger Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet als Aspekten der graphischen Repräsentation. Daher ist es das Ziel dieser Arbeit, die Interaktion im Bereich der Visualisierung zu stärken. Hierzu wird eine einheitliche Sicht auf Interaktion in der Visualisierung entwickelt
