    A Genetic Programming Approach to Geometrical Digital Content Modeling in Web Oriented Applications

    The paper presents the advantages of using genetic techniques in web oriented problems. The specific area of genetic programming applications that paper approaches is content modeling. The analyzed digital content is formed through the accumulation of targeted geometrical structured entities that have specific characteristics and behavior. The accumulated digital content is analyzed and specific features are extracted in order to develop an analysis system through the use of genetic programming. An experiment is presented which evolves a model based on specific features of each geometrical structured entity in the digital content base. The results show promising expectations with a low error rate which provides fair approximations related to analyzed geometrical structured entities.Genetic Algorithm, Genetic Programming, Fitness, Geometrical Structured Entities, Analysis

    Group reasoning in social environments

    While modeling group decision making scenarios, the existence of a central authority is often assumed which is in charge of amalgamating the preferences of a given set of agents with the aim of computing a socially desirable outcome, for instance, maximizing the utilitarian or the egalitarian social welfare. Departing from this classical perspective and inspired by the growing body of literature on opinion formation and diffusion, a setting for group decision making is studied where agents are selfishly interested and where each of them can adopt her own decision without a central coordination, hence possibly disagreeing with the decision taken by some of the other agents. In particular, it is assumed that agents belong to a social environment and that their preferences on the available alternatives can be influenced by the number of “neighbors” agree- ing/disagreeing with them. The setting is formalized and studied by modeling agents’ reasoning capabilities in terms of weighted propositional logics and by focusing on Nash-stable solutions as the prototypical solution concept. In particular, a thoroughly computational complexity analysis is conducted on the problem of deciding the existence of such stable outcomes. Moreover, for the classes of environments where stability is always guaranteed, the convergence of Nash dynamics consisting of sequences of best response updates is studied, too

    Maximal connectivity and superconnectivity in a network are two important features of its reliability. In this paper, using graph terminology, we first give a lower bound for the vertex connectivity of the strong product of two networks and then we prove that the resulting structure is more reliable than its generators.     Application of the Dichromatic Reflection Model to Wood

    The applicability of the dichromatic reflection model to describe wood-light interactions in Douglas-fir veneer was investigated. Spectral reflectance measurements taken with illumination along and across the fibers were analyzed by the methodology proposed by Lee et al. (1990). Differences between observed and predicted spectral reflectances were small overall, and increased towards the blue end of the spectrum. Transmission through cell walls, interreflection between cell walls, and an optically active interface are possible explanations for these differences. Average reflectances were higher when samples were illuminated across the directions of the fibers. Rotary-peeled veneer, however, presents surface irregularities where the wood fibers have been pulled away from the surface of the material and where the along-fiber brightness is higher than its corresponding across-fiber measurement

    The scenario that emerges from scientific research on the use of BIPV systems in architecture shows that photovoltaic technologies and systems have reached a significant development in production and installation, becoming a strategic approach in the field of energy efficiency and enabling a progressive decarbonisation of the building stock. Still, knowledge and methods of architectural integration are not fully developed, especially in Italy. The present paper reports the results of a research activity that, systematising the main criteria and indicators for assessing the integrability of BIPVs in architecture, has led to the development of BIPV Product and Case Study Catalogues that define an up-to-date state of the art on aspects of design and technological innovation using BIPV systems and components. Catalogues have been created with the objective of contributing to the growth of knowledge on the most up-to-date methods of design by implementing a ‘technology transfer’ from good practice, in which photovoltaic systems are an integral part of the design concept and construction techniques of the architecture. The analysis related to the production of BIPV systems and components and their application in architectural projects allows one to highlight the main critical factors in the diffusion throughout the country and to identify the main research demand arising from the specific national situation

    Inclusive interaction design: bridging the gap between information visualization perception and color vision deficiency users

    It’s becoming increasingly important to design for Inclusivity, meaning building products that are accessible to all type of users, namely color vision deficiency (CVD) deuteranope users. Along with that, we can say that Information Visualization plays a big role in the understanding of how ou world functions, since the amount of produced data (2.5 exabytes) is increasing every day. In this way, this project aims to bridge the gap between Information Visualization perception and color vision deficiency users, by exploring the effects that saturation as a variable, applied through an interaction design methodology approach, has on human visual perception. An interactive system was designe in order to explore the effects saturation had in both user’s perception. To perform the experiment, 12 trichromatic male participants were recruited and the selected graph’s colours were simulated into colours a CVD user would normally perceive. This experiment enabled to reach a range in which both trichromatic and CVD users perceive the information of a specific graph in an optimal way. Serving as a first assessment in potentially reaching a range that ensures the optimal visual perception of all types of Information Visualizations for both CVD an trichromatic users, this project intends to be used as a reference in future investigations, in order to improve the quality of life of users affected by this visual constraint
