Movies That Sell: A Rhetorical Analysis of Product Placements in Marvel Movies

The advancement of digital entertainment media has given audiences the ability to skip ads that do not interest them. Consequently, brands face the challenge of creating ads that can compel audiences and finding media outlets that can effectively reach target audiences. Brands today use product placements to promote their products because movie audiences are generally attentive to ads when they are incorporated in a movie’s narrative. Marvel Cinematic Universe is a globally recognized entertainment franchise that uses product placements strategically to promote brands in their movies and TV shows. In this study, I conduct rhetorical analyses of select product placements in Marvel movies to investigate how they employ different rhetorical appeals in promoting products; and discuss how the appeals can influence audience perceptions of the products advertised. My findings suggest that product placements in Marvel movies leverage Aristotle\u27s rhetorical appeals to draw audiences\u27 attention and influence their opinions about products

The Instrumentation Program for the Thirty Meter Telescope

    Get PDF
An overview of the current status of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) instrumentation program is presented. Science cases and operational concepts as well as their links to the instruments are continually revisited and updated through a series of workshops and conferences. Work on the three first-light instruments (WFOS IRIS, and IRMS) has made significant progress, and many groups in TMT partner communities are developing future instrument concepts. Other instrument-related subsystems are also receiving considerable attention given their importance to the scientific end-to-end performance of the Observatory. As an example, we describe aspects of the facility instrument cooling system that are crucially important to successful diffraction-limited observations on an extremely large telescope

Acceptance Or Rejection Of An Audit Client: Understanding Risk In The Auditing Environment

In this case, students are required to conduct an initial assessment of a potential audit client and provide a well-supported recommendation to the audit partner. Specifically, students are assigned a company and asked to gather and evaluate data on it and its upper management. Based on that information, students are to make an objective recommendation to the firm on whether to accept, accept and consider a risk-adjusted audit fee, or reject the client; they are also required to provide the reasoning or argument for the decision. This case has many learning objectives. First, students will demonstrate their research and critical thinking skills and apply those skills by evaluating the information to make a judgment similar to that required of audit professionals. Second, students will create a memorandum that concisely summarizes the obtained information and provide a well-supported recommendation. Third, students will understand and be able to communicate the various types of risk in the business environment. Finally, the case assists students in converting their perspective from that of an accountant to that of an evaluator or auditor. Moreover, the case can be used to introduce professional skepticism and the importance of maintaining objectivity when making a judgment.
