Context-awareness for mobile sensing: a survey and future directions
The evolution of smartphones together with increasing computational power have empowered developers to create innovative context-aware applications for recognizing user related social and cognitive activities in any situation and at any location. The existence and awareness of the context provides the capability of being conscious of physical environments or situations around mobile device users. This allows network services to respond proactively and intelligently based on such awareness. The key idea behind context-aware applications is to encourage users to collect, analyze and share local sensory knowledge in the purpose for a large scale community use by creating a smart network. The desired network is capable of making autonomous logical decisions to actuate environmental objects, and also assist individuals. However, many open challenges remain, which are mostly arisen due to the middleware services provided in mobile devices have limited resources in terms of power, memory and bandwidth. Thus, it becomes critically important to study how the drawbacks can be elaborated and resolved, and at the same time better understand the opportunities for the research community to contribute to the context-awareness. To this end, this paper surveys the literature over the period of 1991-2014 from the emerging concepts to applications of context-awareness in mobile platforms by providing up-to-date research and future research directions. Moreover, it points out the challenges faced in this regard and enlighten them by proposing possible solutions

Fostering Public Good Contributions with Symbolic Awards: A Large-Scale Natural Field Experiment at Wikipedia
This natural field experiment tests the effects of purely symbolic awards on volunteer retention in a public goods context. The experiment is conducted at Wikipedia, which faces declining editor retention rates, particularly among newcomers. Randomization assures that award receipt is orthogonal to previous performance. The analysis reveals that awards have a sizeable effect on newcomer retention, which persists over the four quarters following the initial intervention. This is noteworthy for indicating that awards for volunteers can be effective even if they have no impact on the volunteers’ future career opportunities. The awards are purely symbolic, and the status increment they produce is limited to the recipients’ pseudonymous online identities in a community they have just recently joined. The results can be explained by enhanced self-identification with the community, but they are also in line with recent findings on the role of status and reputation, recognition, and evaluation potential in online communities. Understanding employees’ intrapreneurial behavior: a case study
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a deeper insight into the organizational factors and
personal motivations of intrapreneurs that may foster intrapreneurial behaviors of employees in a new
technology-based firm (NTBF).
Design/methodology/approach – The paper takes a qualitative approach to explore organizational
and individual antecedents of employees’ intrapreneurial behavior. A single case study was conducted
on the basis of semi-structured interviews with the founders and top managers of the firm and with
intrapreneurial employees.
Findings – Results show that intrapreneurial projects may arise in firms whose top managers support
corporate entrepreneurship (CE) in a non-active manner. Intrapreneurial behaviors of employees can emerge
despite the lack of time and limited resources available for undertaking projects. Moreover, work discretion
and mutual confidence and the quality of the relationship between employees and top managers are the most
valued factors for intrapreneurs.
Practical implications – Based on the intrapreneurial projects studied, this paper helps to contextualize
intrapreneurs’ perception of organizational support and the personal motivations for leading projects within
an NTBF.
Originality/value – Traditionally, the literature has mainly focused on the top-down implementation of
entrepreneurial projects within large firms. This paper contributes to the understanding of the combination of
firm- and individual-level factors that facilitate intrapreneurial behaviors of employees. It also illustrates the
contextual conditions and the firms’ orientation on CE within an NTBF
Knowledge Creation and Sharing in Organisational Contexts: A Motivation-Based Perspective
This paper develops a motivation-based perspective to explore how organisations resolve the social dilemma of knowledge sharing, and the ways in which different motivational mechanisms interact to foster knowledge sharing and creation in different organisational contexts. The core assumption is that the willingness of organisational members to engage in knowledge sharing can be viewed on a continuum from purely opportunistic behaviour regulated by extrinsic incentives to an apparently altruistic stance fostered by social norms and group identity. The analysis builds on a three-category taxonomy of motivation: adding ‘hedonic’ motivation to the traditional dichotomy of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Based on an analysis of empirical case studies in the literature, we argue that the interaction and mix of the three different motivators play a key role in regulating and translating potential into actual behaviour, and they underline the complex dynamics of knowledge sharing and creation in different organisational contexts
