Chapter 34 - Biocompatibility of nanocellulose: Emerging biomedical applications
Nanocellulose already proved to be a highly relevant material for biomedical
applications, ensued by its outstanding mechanical properties and, more importantly, its biocompatibility. Nevertheless, despite their previous intensive
research, a notable number of emerging applications are still being developed.
Interestingly, this drive is not solely based on the nanocellulose features, but also
heavily dependent on sustainability. The three core nanocelluloses encompass
cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). All these different types of nanocellulose display highly interesting biomedical properties per se, after modification and when used in
composite formulations. Novel applications that use nanocellulose includewell-known areas, namely, wound dressings, implants, indwelling medical
devices, scaffolds, and novel printed scaffolds. Their cytotoxicity and biocompatibility using recent methodologies are thoroughly analyzed to reinforce their
near future applicability. By analyzing the pristine core nanocellulose, none
display cytotoxicity. However, CNF has the highest potential to fail long-term
biocompatibility since it tends to trigger inflammation. On the other hand, neverdried BNC displays a remarkable biocompatibility. Despite this, all nanocelluloses clearly represent a flag bearer of future superior biomaterials, being

The benefits of an additional practice in descriptive geomerty course: non obligatory workshop at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade
At the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade, in the Descriptive geometry (DG) course,
non-obligatory workshops named āfacultative taskā are held for the three generations of freshman
students with the aim to give students the opportunity to get higher final grade on the exam. The
content of this workshop was a creative task, performed by a group of three students, offering free
choice of a topic, i.e. the geometric structure associated with some real or imagery
architectural/art-work object.
After the workshops a questionnaire (composed by the professors at the course) is given to the
students, in order to get their response on teaching/learning materials for the DG course and the
workshop. During the workshop students performed one of the common tests for testing spatial
abilities, named āpaper folding".
Based on the results of the questionnairethe investigation of the linkages between:studentsā
final achievements and spatial abilities, as well as studentsā expectations of their performance on
the exam, and how the studentsā capacity to correctly estimate their grades were associated with
expected and final grades, is provided. The goal was to give an evidence that a creative work,
performed by a small group of students and self-assessment of their performances are a good way
of helping students to maintain motivation and to accomplish their achievement.
The final conclusion is addressed to the benefits of additional workshops employment in the
course, which confirmhigherfinal scores-grades, achievement of creative results (facultative tasks)
and confirmation of DG knowledge adaption

The Landscape architecture like the other interdisciplinary field stepped in a contemporary technologies area focused on that, beside the good execution of works, designer solutions has to be more realistic and ātouchableā. The opportunities provided by Virtual Reality are certainly not negligible, it is common knowledge that the designs in the world are already presented in this way so the Virtual Reality increasingly used.
Following the example of the application of virtual reality in landscape architecture, this paper deals with proposals for the use of virtual reality in landscape architecture so that designers, clients and users would have a virtual sense of scope e.g. rooftop garden, urban areas, parks, roads, etc. It is a programming language that creates a series of images creating a whole, so
certain parts can be controlled or even modified in VR. Virtual reality today requires a specific gadget, such as Occulus, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR and similar.
The aim of this paper is to acquire new theoretical and practical knowledge in the
interdisciplinary field of virtual reality, the ability to display using virtual reality methods, and to present through a brief overview the plant species used in the design and construction of an intensive roof garden in a Mediterranean climate, the basic characteristics of roofing gardens as well as the benefits they carry.
Virtual and augmented reality as technology is a very powerful tool for landscape architects, when modeling roof gardens, parks, and urban areas. One of the most popular technologies used by landscape architects is Google Tilt Brush, which enables fast modeling. Mobile Measurement system for clinical diagnosis: A Transepidermal Water Loss Probe
Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is commonly used as a surrogate marker for skin barrier function. Although current devices enable TEWL to be measured with ease and precision under controlled laboratory conditions, they do not yield reliable readings in an uncontrolled environment. This project aimed to develop a new TEWL device that is mobile, i.e. that would fit in the pocket and measure TEWL anywhere. For this, the prototype had to be portable, wireless and to have good autonomy. In addition the prototype performances were evaluated in terms of repeatability and sensitivity. The primary design is based on a closed-chamber to limit the effect of the environment. Moreover, the use of a fan to remove surface water and homogenise the micro-climate in the chamber was introduced. Mathematical modelling and measurements of water vapour and heat flux in closed TEWL chambers of a range of geometries was investigated to establish ideal sensors locations and blower flow rates. It was found that the fan decreased repeatability but increased sensitivity. In addition, it decreased coefficient of variation of measurements on moist skin, contrary to other TEWL chamber methods. Furthermore, lower fan speed yielded better precision. Finally, the gradient calculation is the crucial part of a TEWL measurement and Least Square Fitting was used to stabilise the readings and improve repeatability at the expense of computational speed. The work suggests that it should be possible to develop a viable new design that can generate measurements in the field that are easy to make and reliable but further work is needed to establish accuracy evaluation from a calibration with a fixed quantity of
water and to develop a full commercial product
Dipterocarps protected by Jering local wisdom in Jering Menduyung Nature Recreational Park, Bangka Island, Indonesia
Apart of the oil palm plantation expansion, the Jering Menduyung Nature Recreational Park has relatively diverse plants. The 3,538 ha park is located at the north west of Bangka Island, Indonesia. The minimum species-area curve was 0.82 ha which is just below Dalil conservation forest that is 1.2 ha, but it is much higher than measurements of several secondary forests in the Island that are 0.2 ha. The plot is inhabited by more than 50 plant species. Of 22 tree species, there are 40 individual poles with the average diameter of 15.3 cm, and 64 individual trees with the average diameter of 48.9 cm. The density of Dipterocarpus grandiflorus (Blanco) Blanco or kruing, is 20.7 individual/ha with the diameter ranges of 12.1 ā 212.7 cm or with the average diameter of 69.0 cm. The relatively intact park is supported by the local wisdom of Jering tribe, one of indigenous tribes in the island. People has regulated in cutting trees especially in the cape. The conservation agency designates the park as one of the kruing propagules sources in the province. The growing oil palm plantation and the less adoption of local wisdom among the youth is a challenge to forest conservation in the province where tin mining activities have been the economic driver for decades. More socialization from the conservation agency and the involvement of university students in raising environmental awareness is important to be done
