Adaptive Beamforming and Adaptive Modulation-Assisted Network Performance of Multiuser Detection-Aided FDD and TDD CDMA Systems

    No full text
The network performance of a frequency division duplex and time division duplex (TDD) code division multiple access (CDMA)-based system is investigated using system parameters similar to those of the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System. The new call blocking and call dropping probabilities, the probability of low-quality access, and the required average transmit power are quantified both with and without adaptive antenna arrays (AAAs), as well as when subjected to shadow fading. In some of the scenarios investigated, the system’s user capacity is doubled with the advent of adaptive antennas. The employment of adaptive modulation techniques in conjunction with AAAs resulted in further significant network capacity gains. This is particularly so in the context of TDD CDMA, where the system’s capacity becomes poor without adaptive antennas and adaptive modulation owing to the high base station (BS) to BS interference inflicted as a consequence of potentially using all time slots in both the uplink and downlink of the emerging wireless Internet. Blind user detection in doubly-dispersive DS/CDMA channels

In this work, we consider the problem of detecting the presence of a new user in a direct-sequence/code-division-multiple-access (DS/CDMA) system with a doubly-dispersive fading channel, and we propose a novel blind detection strategy which only requires knowledge of the spreading code of the user to be detected, but no prior information as to the time-varying channel impulse response and the structure of the multiaccess interference. The proposed detector has a bounded constant false alarm rate (CFAR) under the design assumptions, while providing satisfactory detection performance even in the presence of strong cochannel interference and high user mobility.Comment: Accepted for publication on IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin

Packet data communications over coded CDMA with hybrid type-II ARQ

This dissertation presents in-depth investigation of turbo-coded CDNIA systems in packet data communication terminology. It is divided into three parts; (1) CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ in deterministic environment, (2) CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ in random access environment and (3) an implementation issue on turbo decoding. As a preliminary, the performance of CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ is investigated in deterministic environment. It highlights the practically achievable spectral efficiency of CDMA system with turbo codes and the effect of code rates on the performance of systems with MF and LMMSE receivers, respectively. For given ensemble distance spectra of punctured turbo codes, an improved union bound is used to evaluate the error probability of ML turbo decoder with MF receiver and with LMMSE receiver front-end and, then, the corresponding spectral efficiency is computed as a function of system load. In the second part, a generalized analytical framework is first provided to analyze hybrid type-11 ARQ in random access environment. When applying hybrid type-11 ARQ, probability of packet success and packet length is generally different from attempt to attempt. Since the conventional analytical model, customarily employed for ALOHA system with pure or hybrid type-I ARQ, cannot be applied for this case, an expanded analytical model is introduced. It can be regarded as a network of queues and Jackson and Burke\u27s theorems can be applied to simplify the analysis. The second part is further divided into two sub topics, i.e. CDMA slotted ALOHA with hybrid type-11 ARQ using packet combining and CDMA unslotted ALOHA with hybrid type-11 ARQ using code combining. For code combining, the rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) codes are examined. In the third part, noticing that the decoding delay is crucial to the fast ARQ, a parallel MAP algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational decoding delay of turbo codes. It utilizes the forward and backward variables computed in the previous iteration to provide boundary distributions for each sub-block MAP decoder. It has at least two advantages over the existing parallel scheme; No performance degradation and No additional computation

Use of RNS Based Pseudo Noise Sequence in DS-CDMA and 3G WCDMA

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) based on Spread Signal (SS) has emerged as one of the most important multiple access technologies for Second Generation (2G) and Third Generation (3G) wireless communication systems by its wide applications in many important mobile cellular standards. CDMA technique relies on spreading codes to separate dierent users or channels and its properties will govern the performance of the system. So many of the problems of communication systems based on CDMA technology stem from the spreading codes/sequences, which includes two sub-categories, one being the orthogonal codes, such as Walsh Hadamard (WH) codes and Orthogonal Variable Spreading Factor (OVSF) codes, and the other being pseudo-noise or Pseudo Random (PN) sequences, such as Gold sequences, Kasami sequences, m-sequences, etc. In this thesis a PN sequence generation based on Residue Arithmetic is investigated with an eort to improve the performance of existing interference-limited CDMA technology for mobile cellular systems. This interference-limited performance is due to the fact that all the existing CDMA codes used in mobile cellular standards does not consider external interferences, multipath propagation, Doppler eect etc. So the non-ideal correlation properties of the pseudo-random CDMA codes results in MAI when used in a multi-user system. The PN codes appear random yet they are completely deterministic in nature with a small set of initial conditions. Consequently this work focuses on CDMA code design approach based on Residue Number System (RNS) which should take into account as many real operational conditions as possible and to maintain a suciently large code set size.First, the thesis reviews RNS, DS-CDMA and CDMA codes that are already implemented in various mobile cellular standards. Then the new PN Sequencegenerator design based on RNS is discussed. Comparison of the generated PN sequence with respect to other standard sequence is done in terms of number of codes and correlation properties. Monte-Carlo simulations with the generated sequence are carried out for performance analysis under multi-path environment. The system has been evaluated in AWGN, Rayleigh Fading channel and dierent Stationary Multipath Channels for dierent cross-correlation threshold. It is known that orthogonal Codes are used to multiplex more than one signal for downlink transmission over cellular networks. This downlink transmission is prone to self interference caused by the loss of orthogonality between spreading codes due to multipath propagation. This issue is investigated in detail with respect to WCDMA standards, which is very good representative for CDMA based 3G mobile cellular systems where the channelization code is OVSF code. The code assignment blocking (CAB) (If a particular code in the tree is used in a cell, then all its parent codes and child codes should not be used in the same cell to maintain orthogonality among the users) problem of OVSF codes restricts the number of available codes for a given cell. Since the 3rd generation WCDMA mobile communication systems apply the same multiple access technique, the generated sequence can also be the channelization code for downlink WCDMA system to mitigate the the same. The performance of the system is compared with Walsh Hadamard code over multipath AWGN and dierent Fading channels. This thesis work shows that RNS based PN sequence has enhanced performance to that of other CDMA codes by comparing the bit error probability in multi- user and multipath environment thus contributing a little towards the evolution of next generation CDMA technology

A study of UMTS terrestrial radio access performance

This thesis considers the performance evaluation of third generation radio networks, in particular UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA). First, the performance evaluation methods are presented. The typical capacity of UTRA is estimated using those methods and a few solutions are evaluated to improve the capacity and coverage. The thesis further studies the effect of base station synchronization on the performance of UTRA time division duplex mode. The performance evaluation is based on the combination of theoretical calculations, link and system level simulations, and laboratory and field measurements. It is shown that these different evaluation methods give similar results and – when combined together – they can be used for the radio network development purposes. The simulation results indicate that the typical WCDMA, i.e. UTRA frequency division duplex mode, macro cell capacity is between 600 and 1000 kbps per sector per 5 MHz. The capacity is sensitive to the environment and to the transceiver performance. The results further show that user bit rates up to 2 Mbps can be provided locally for packet data with the basic Rake receiver, but not for full coverage circuit switched connections in macro cells. The following performance enhancement techniques are evaluated in this thesis: soft combining of packet retransmissions, base station multiuser detection and 4-branch base station receiver diversity. The link level simulations show that soft combining can provide a gain up to 2.0 dB, which can be used to increase the capacity up to 60 %. The performance of base station multiuser detection is evaluated with link and system level simulations. It is shown that the studied sub-optimal multiuser detector is able to remove 60-70 % of the intra-cell interference. That gain can be utilized to improve the uplink capacity by 50-100 % or the coverage by 1-2 dB. The performance of 4-branch antenna diversity is evaluated in the simulations and in the field measurements. The results show that the average coverage gain of 4-branch diversity with two separate cross-polarized antennas is 3 dB compared to 2-branch diversity with one cross-polarized antenna. The synchronization requirements of UTRA time division duplex base stations are studied with system simulations. The results show that synchronization is a key requirement for time division duplex operation, especially for the uplink performance. The study indicates that co-location of different operators' base stations is feasible in time division duplex operation only if the two networks are synchronized and if an identical split between uplink and downlink is used.reviewe

Soft handover issues in radio resource management for 3G WCDMA networks

PhDMobile terminals allow users to access services while on the move. This unique feature has driven the rapid growth in the mobile network industry, changing it from a new technology into a massive industry within less than two decades. Handover is the essential functionality for dealing with the mobility of the mobile users. Compared with the conventional hard handover employed in the GSM mobile networks, the soft handover used in IS-95 and being proposed for 3G has better performance on both link and system level. Previous work on soft handover has led to several algorithms being proposed and extensive research has been conducted on the performance analysis and parameters optimisation of these algorithms. Most of the previous analysis focused on the uplink direction. However, in future mobile networks, the downlink is more likely to be the bottleneck of the system capacity because of the asymmetric nature of new services, such as Internet traffic. In this thesis, an in-depth study of the soft handover effects on the downlink direction of WCDMA networks is carried out, leading to a new method of optimising soft handover for maximising the downlink capacity and a new power control approach
