Conscious mobility for urban spaces: case studies review and indicator framework design
A lack of data collection on conscious mobility behaviors has been identified in current sustainable and smart mobility planning, development and implementation strategies. This leads to technocentric solutions that do not place people and their behavior at the center of new mobility solutions in urban centers around the globe. This paper introduces the concept of conscious mobility to link techno-economic analyses with user awareness on the impact of their travel decisions on other people, local urban infrastructure and the environment through systematic big data collection. A preliminary conscious mobility indicator framework is presented to leverage behavioral considerations to enhance urban-community mobility systems. Key factors for conscious mobility analysis have been derived from five case studies. The sample offers regional diversity (i.e., local, regional and the global urban contexts), as well as different goals in the transformation of conventional urban transport systems, from improving public transport efficiency and equipment electrification to mitigate pollution and climate risks, to focusing on equity, access and people safety. The case studies selected provide useful metrics on the adoption of cleaner, smarter, safer and more autonomous mobility technologies, along with novel people-centric program designs to build an initial set of conscious mobility indicators frameworks. The parameters were applied to the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon in Mexico focusing on the needs of the communities that work, study and live around the local urban campus of the Tecnologico de Monterreyâs Distrito Tec. This case study, served as an example of how conscious mobility indicators could be applied and customized to a community and region of interest. This paper introduces the first application of the conscious mobility framework for urban communitiesâ mobility system analysis. This more holistic assessment approach includes dimensions such as society and culture, infrastructure and urban spaces, technology, government, normativity, economy and politics, and the environment. The expectation is that the conscious mobility framework of analysis will become a useful tool for smarter and sustainable urban and mobility problem solving and decision making to enhance the quality of life all living in urban communities
Consumer Neuroscience e Brand Relationship: misurare lâassociazione implicita tra il SĂ© del consumatore e il brand.
Il presente elaborato si focalizza sulla connessione tra Consumer Neuroscience e Brand Relationship con un focus specifico sul SĂ© del consumatore, analizzato attraverso uno strumento di misurazione indiretta del comportamento. Lâobiettivo Ăš stato quello di contribuire alla validazione e allâutilizzo nel contesto italiano di un SC-IAT per lo studio dellâassociazione tra SĂ© e brand, interpretandone i risultati tramite unâanalisi di matrice neuroscientifica su stimoli brand-related. Il vantaggio di questo strumento, rispetto allo IAT tradizionale, Ăš quello di poter âfotografareâ unâistantanea sulla relazione senza la necessitĂ di utilizzare una dimensione comparativa. Misurando direttamente la forza dellâassociazione tra il concetto del brand e quello del SĂ©. Per farlo, lâautore Ăš passato attraverso fasi distinte che hanno prima indagato gli aspetti puramente psicometrici dello strumento, per dedicarsi successivamente a un test neuroscientifico. I risultati hanno evidenziato delle buone performance del SC-IAT, cosĂŹ pensato, suggerendo approfondimenti futuri e applicazioni a brand dalla differente architettura. Inoltre, lâanalisi neurofisiologica ha evidenziato come lo strumento possa risultare efficace nel fornire unâinterpretazione aggiuntiva agli indicatori neurofisiologici testati durante la visualizzazione di uno stimolo relativo al brand
A People-centered Approach to Historic Gardens: The Influence of Social, Political and Economic Factors on Management and Fruition
Historic gardens are heritage properties of great environmental, cultural, social, political and economic value, yet they are also precarious because they are composed of living elements. Their survival, in fact, depends on constant care.
This research project seeks to analyze the social, political and economic factors influencing the management and fruition of historic gardens to improve their conservation and ability to contribute to human wellbeing and quality of life. These themes are both missing from existing literature and relevant to current trends in historic garden conservation and fruition made even more evident by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Various research methodologies are applied in pursuit of the research aim, including: qualitative interviews providing a first-hand account of the motivations and struggles of those who care for historic gardens; a systematic review of the literature to trace the development of themes and trends in the research and identify significant gaps; document content analysis to make sense of the various political entities and instruments governing historic gardens; spatial analysis to investigate the potential and actual influence of heritage lists on recreational ecosystem service demand; the zonal travel cost method to assess the actual economic value of recreational ecosystem services created by an event in a historic garden.
Some of the investigations conducted as part of the dissertation use the city of Palermo (Italy) as a case study to analyze the problems affecting historic garden management and fruition. Palermoâs parks and gardens have been celebrated throughout history, and they still make up most the cityâs green spaces. However, they are also recognized as being neglected and deteriorating. Palermo is also a good model for internationally relevant issues related to historic gardens, including the effect of economic and health crises on the management and fruition of green spaces, public austerity, dysfunctional bureaucracy, sustainable development and wellbeing, making the results of these investigations relevant internationally as well as locally.
The results of this research provide a people-centered perspective on the management and fruition of historic gardens. By considering the social, political and economic contexts in which they exist, the research identified developments in natural and cultural heritage practice, policy and planning that have important implications for historic garden management and fruition. Recent policy has focused on issues of sustainability and wellbeing, and consequentially put more emphasis on the experiences these heritage sites provide and on the stakeholders they involve. With this perspective, public engagement initiatives organized in historic gardens play an important role in involving the community, creating meaningful experiences and creating economic value. They are human inputs that transform potential cultural ecosystem service benefits into actual benefits.
These findings also have implications for the governance, planning management and fruition of other resources valued for their cultural ecosystem services. The research presented here can also be fruitfully applied to investigations of the various cultural ecosystem services provided by such areas as urban green spaces, cultural landscapes and nature reserves. These qualitative, spatial and economic assessments are necessary to ensure that public policy measures, investments, and private or non-profit management strategies are effective in meeting their objectives to contribute to human wellbeing and conserve resources for the future

Da anni la CE-Commissione europea investe risorse economiche crescenti nella ricerca e nelle politiche per le NbS essendo stati dimostrati innumerevoli vantaggi ambientali derivanti dal loro utilizzo, fra cui il contributo allâadattamento ai cambiamenti climatici.
La stessa CE, perĂČ, rileva un importante ostacolo alla loro diffusione: âLe NbS hanno il potenziale per stimolare le economie locali e creare opportunitĂ di business. Tuttavia, molte autoritĂ pubbliche segnalano una gamma di difficoltĂ nellâutilizzo degli appalti pubblici per attuare progetti NbS. Sono necessarie maggiore coerenza politica e trasversalitĂ nella definizione delle prioritĂ a livello dellâUnione europea, cosĂŹ come una maggiore progettualitĂ â (Castellari et al., 2021).
Il focus dellâevento ha riguardato gli aspetti funzionali e prestazionali della vegetazione e dei sistemi tecnologici vegetati, con prevalente riferimento alle coperture a verde e alle facciate vegetate, nonchĂ© ai sistemi vegetati e drenanti impiegabili al suolo. Workplace-Based Learning: A Study in BIM-enabled Construction Projects
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a fast-emerging technology that has promoted digital transformation in the construction project lifecycle through changing the ways in which people work. However, empirical studies show that professionals in the construction industry are still reluctant to adopt BIM in their construction projects due to a lack of skills and suitable learning approaches. Furthermore, embracing an appropriate learning approach is still challenging in built environment projects, which are generally complex, temporary, unique and uncertain due to their fragmented nature. To achieve more successful BIM-enabled construction projects, a flexible and relevant learning approach for the workplace needs to be determined. Consequently, resolving this issue requires identification of the key learning aspects that influence creation of a suitable learning approach. The aim of this doctoral study is to explore how workplace-based learning could be designed and implemented in BIM enabled-construction projects.
Learning that takes place in construction projects is predominantly determined by complex social practices. On the other hand, BIM â which professionals desire to adopt in construction projects â is interwoven with both interactions with humans and artefacts. To holistically investigate the learning in BIM-enabled construction projects, âConnectivismâ, a new learning approach for the digital age, is adopted in this study. This explains the complex learning that happens in the work environment through a combination of principles by understanding the unrelated unseen events (chaos), exploring the learning as a collective (network), investigating the position between order and disorder (complexity) and analysing unpredictable and uncontrollable learning that occurs due to non-linear interactions (self-organising). Understanding the continuous learning in both human and non-human activities through Connectivism has helped to identify the links between the key learning aspects in the workplace. Examining the identified learning aspects in a connected way has encouraged professionals to figure out the most suitable learning approach for their project team.
This study has been conducted in three phases: literature review, semi-structured interviews and a case study approach, in order to understand the learning that occurs in BIM-enabled construction projects. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 professionals working in BIM-enabled construction projects. Two case studies were selected to analyse BIM-enabled construction projects in the ÂŁ30-60 million scale. Furthermore, six case studies within those selected projects were chosen for an in-depth investigation on the in-project learning. Data within the case studies were collected through project documents, semi-structured interviews and meeting observations. Nvivo was used to evaluate, interpret, explain and analyse the data collected from both semi-structured interviews and case studies.
The study reveals that BIM-enabled construction projects are largely involved with information that is digitally linked with federated 3D models and project participants. Investigation shows that learning in in these projects is continuous, networked and depends on participation in addition to knowledge accumulation and knowledge creation. âParticipationâ and âInterpretationâ as a combination have significant impacts on this complex learning that takes place in work environments. âParticipationâ at work shows how each individual wants to get involved, interpret and learn in each situation that they participate. On the other hand, the multidisciplinary nature of BIM-enabled construction projects confirms that project participants need to focus on interpretation to agree on a common meaning of artefacts and information. Therefore, âInterpretationâ is identified as a form of thinking that comprises planning, monitoring oneâs activities and problem-solving. Interpretation, which is enabled via thinking and sharing experience, helps to shape the decisions and solutions during Participation. To help construction projects in achieving a suitable learning approach which is vital for a success of a project, a model for learning in the workplace has been developed through merging the learning aspects that have been identified from chosen BIM-enabled construction projects.
The novel model for workplace-based learning is a combination of participation and interpretation which is linked through three learning modes: Alignment, Insight and Engagement. The combination of these learning modes has contributed to interpret the ideas while participating at work. Consequently, it enabled project participants to align on a common meaning in an informative collaborative environment. The proposed model of learning in the workplace presents a systematic approach for achieving suitable learning in BIM-enabled projects by connecting the key learning aspects at the project level. Furthermore, this can be also used to employ skilled people and promote common standards on skills expectations associated with BIM-enabled projects
Principal's Leadership Strategy to Improve School Achievement in the Covid-19 Era: Comparative Study of Two Senior High Schools
This study aims to describe: 1) the leadership strategy of two school principals, 2) school achievement, and 3) efforts to improve school achievement during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research method. It used snowball sampling. The study was conducted at State Senior High School 1 (SHS) and Catholic High School (CHS). Key informants consisted of 1 principal, one vice principal, three teachers, three education staff, three students, and three parents from each school for in-depth interviews. Data collection techniques were also carried out through observation and documentation studies. The results showed that: 1) in SHS the relationship-oriented leadership pattern stood out, while in the CHS the task-oriented leadership pattern was more prominent, (2) the achievement of both high schools was above the national average; and 3) The Head of SHS forms a learning group based on interests and talents, while CHS forms an innovative virtual achievement group. The results of this study are helpful for school principals as a reference in implementing effective leadership patterns to improve school achievement. The taxonomy of leadership patterns (entrepreneurial, bureaucratic, political, and professional) can be applied to improve school achievement, although there is a different emphasis between the two school

The Seventh International Symposium Monitoring of Mediterranean Coastal Areas. Problems and Measurement Techniques (Livorno, Italy June 19-20-21, 2018) was organized by the CNR-IBIMET in collaboration with the City of Livorno, the LEM Foundation, the FCS Foundation and the Compagnia dei Portuali di Livorno, with the patronage by Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Accademia dei Georgofili, The University of Florence, the Tuscany Region and the North Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority. The Symposium, in which scholars from all over the Mediterranean basin participated, was an opportunity to illustrate new proposals and to promote actions to protect the Mediterranean coastal marine environment. In particular, the event was characterized by the search for technical and instrumental solutions to problems related to: energy production in the coastal area, morphology and evolution of coastlines, flora and fauna of the littoral system, management and integrated coastal protection, coastline geography, human influence on coastal landscape
