Query independent measures of annotation and annotator impact
The modern-day web-user plays a far more active role in the creation of content for the web as a whole. In this paper we present Annoby, a free-text annotation system built to give users a more interactive experience of the events of the Rugby World Cup 2007. Annotations can be used for query-independent ranking of both the annotations and the original recorded video footage (or documents) which has been annotated, based on the social interactions of a community of users. We present two algorithms, AuthorRank and MessageRank, designed to take advantage of these interactions so as to provide a means of ranking documents by their social impact

Active learning of an action detector on untrimmed videos
textCollecting and annotating videos of realistic human actions is tedious, yet critical for training action recognition systems. We propose a method to actively request the most useful video annotations among a large set of unlabeled videos. Predicting the utility of annotating unlabeled video is not trivial, since any given clip may contain multiple actions of interest, and it need not be trimmed to temporal regions of interest. To deal with this problem, we propose a detection-based active learner to train action category models. We develop a voting-based framework to localize likely intervals of interest in an unlabeled clip, and use them to estimate the total reduction in uncertainty that annotating that clip would yield. On three datasets, we show our approach can learn accurate action detectors more efficiently than alternative active learning strategies that fail to accommodate the "untrimmed" nature of real video data.Computer Science
Learning Intelligent Dialogs for Bounding Box Annotation
We introduce Intelligent Annotation Dialogs for bounding box annotation. We
train an agent to automatically choose a sequence of actions for a human
annotator to produce a bounding box in a minimal amount of time. Specifically,
we consider two actions: box verification, where the annotator verifies a box
generated by an object detector, and manual box drawing. We explore two kinds
of agents, one based on predicting the probability that a box will be
positively verified, and the other based on reinforcement learning. We
demonstrate that (1) our agents are able to learn efficient annotation
strategies in several scenarios, automatically adapting to the image
difficulty, the desired quality of the boxes, and the detector strength; (2) in
all scenarios the resulting annotation dialogs speed up annotation compared to
manual box drawing alone and box verification alone, while also outperforming
any fixed combination of verification and drawing in most scenarios; (3) in a
realistic scenario where the detector is iteratively re-trained, our agents
evolve a series of strategies that reflect the shifting trade-off between
verification and drawing as the detector grows stronger.Comment: This paper appeared at CVPR 201

The automatic summarisation of sports video is of growing importance with the increased availability of on-demand content. Consumers who are unable to view events live often have a desire to watch a summary which allows then to quickly come to terms with all that has happened during a sporting event. Sports forums show that it is not only summaries that are desirable but also the opportunity to share one’s own point of view and discuss the opinions with a community of similar users. In this paper we give an overview of the ways in which annotations have been used to augment existing visual media. We present SportsAnno, a system developed to summarise World Cup 2006 matches and provide a means for open discussion of events within
